Avian hosts of West Nile virus in Arizona.

West Nile virus (WNV) causes sporadic outbreaks of human encephalitis in Phoenix, Arizona. To identify amplifying hosts of WNV in the Phoenix area, we blood-sampled resident birds and measured antibody prevalence following an outbreak in the East Valley of metropolitan Phoenix during summer, 2010. House sparrow (Passer domesticus), house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus), great-tailed grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus), and mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) accounted for most WNV infections among locally resident birds. These species roost communally after early summer breeding. In September 2010, Culex

Surgical treatment of a pulmonary artery aneurysm due to a regurgitant quadricuspid pulmonary valve.

We report the case of a patient with a pulmonary artery (PA) aneurysm secondary to a regurgitant quadricuspid pulmonary valve, in which both lesions were successfully repaired. The patient, a 16-year old boy, was known to have had pulmonary regurgitation and progressive dilation of the PA for years. He was operated on when he developed symptoms of effort, a dilated right ventricle and a PA of 55 mm. The quadricuspid pulmonary valve was an intraoperative finding. It had a dilated annulus, two normal cusps, a third with a 'sparrow-nest' configuration and the fourth was severely hypoplastic (whic

Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae): a bridge vector of West Nile virus to humans.

Host-feeding patterns of Culex pipiens L. collected in southwest suburban Chicago in 2005 were studied using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing techniques. Culex spp. mosquitoes, most identified to Cx. pipiens and the remainder to Cx. restuans by PCR, had fed on 18 avian species, most commonly American robin (Turdus migratorious), house sparrow (Passer domesticus), and mourning dove (Zenaida macroura). Additional blood meals were derived from four mammal species, primarily humans and raccoons (Procyon lotor). During a West Nile virus (WNV) epidemic in 2005, West Nile virus (WNV

Passive immunity to West Nile virus provides limited protection in a common passerine species.

Passerine birds have played an important role in the establishment, maintenance, and spread of West Nile virus (WNV) in North America, and some are susceptible to WNV-associated mortality. Characterization of passive transfer of anti-WNV antibodies in passerines is important to understanding transmission and demographic effects of WNV on wild birds. We showed passively acquired maternal antibodies to WNV in the house sparrow (Passer domesticus). Although all seropositive females (N = 18) produced antibody-positive egg yolks, only 20% of seropositive mothers (3/15) produced seropositive chicks.

Oxidative stress in birds along a NOx and urbanisation gradient: An interspecific approach.

Urbanisation is regarded as one of the most threatening global issues for wildlife, however, measuring its impact is not always straight forward. Oxidative stress physiology has been suggested to be a useful biomarker of health and therefore, a potentially important indicator of the impact that urban environmental stressors, especially air pollution, can have on wildlife. For example, nitrogen oxides (NOx), released during incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, are highly potent pro-oxidants, thus predicted to affect either the protective antioxidants and/or cause oxidative damage to bio-molec

Evaluation of the safety and insecticidal efficacy of ivermectin-treated bird feed formulations in different avian species.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is maintained in an enzootic cycle between reservoir host birds and Culex (Cx.) spp. mosquitoes. This relationship presents a potential target for vector control strategies. Ivermectin (IVM), an endectocidal drug that selectively affects invertebrates while remaining safe at high concentrations in mammals and birds, can be delivered to Culex tarsalis via blood meals from birds fed IVM-treated bird feed. In this study, we evaluated the safety, efficacy, and utility of IVM-treated bird feed as a novel vector control strategy by assessing its impact on multiple b

Modeled associations between university physical education mechanisms and students' mental health.

Mental health issues among students are becoming increasingly serious, and physical exercise is closely linked to both physical and mental health. Therefore, there is a correlation between physical education and students' physical and mental well-being. When examining the relationship between physical education mechanisms in higher education institutions and students' mental health, fluctuations such as individual differences often appear in the data. To address this issue, this paper proposes the "Sparrow Search Tree Network" (SSTNet), a model that employs the "Sparrow Search Algorithm" (SSA)

A Serosurvey of Flavivirus Infection in Horses and Birds in Slovakia.

In central Europe, at least three flaviviruses circulate among vectors and vertebrate hosts. West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) are mosquito-borne viruses maintained in the nature by enzootic cycle between mosquitoes and birds. Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a flavivirus causing annual human cases in Slovakia. The aim of this study is the prevalence assessment of flavivirus infections in horses (n = 145) and birds (n = 109) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and confirmation by neutralization test (VNT). WNV antibodies have been detected in 11.7% of tested horses a

Population density and timing of breeding mediate effects of early life conditions on recruitment.

Identifying the factors driving juvenile recruitment is crucial for predicting the response of populations to environmental change. Importantly, how early life conditions carry over to influence recruitment may be highly dependent on the context in which they occur. For example, the effects of challenging early life conditions may be more pronounced under high densities or when young are born late in the season. We examined the ecological factors influencing local recruitment spanning three decades in Savannah sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) breeding on Kent Island, NB, Canada. The effect

The Future Abundance of Key Bird Species for Pathogen Transmission in the Netherlands.

Wild birds serve as reservoirs and vectors for many different pathogens. Changes in their distribution and abundance, due to environmental change, will influence disease risk. We investigated potential changes in abundance for three commonly occurring species that are likely major drivers of a wide range of diseases: blackbirds, mallards and house sparrows. These are competent hosts for avian influenza and West Nile virus, among other pathogens. Using the Netherlands as a case study, we created random forest models for predicting the distribution and (relative) abundance of these species, both

Surveillance Potential of Non-Native Hawaiian Birds for Detection of West Nile Virus.

West Nile virus (WNV) was first detected in North America in 1999. Alaska and Hawaii (HI) remain the only U.S. states in which transmission of WNV has not been detected. Dead bird surveillance has played an important role in the detection of the virus geographically, as well as temporally. In North America, corvids have played a major role in WNV surveillance; however, the only corvid in HI is the endangered Hawaiian crow that exists only in captivity, thus precluding the use of this species for WNV surveillance in HI. To evaluate the suitability of alternate avian species for WNV surveillance

Cryptosporidium spp. parasitize exotic birds that are commercialized in markets, commercial aviaries, and pet shops.

The purpose of this study was to genetically characterize and phylogenetically analyze the Cryptosporidium spp. isolated from exotic birds commercialized in popular markets, commercial aviaries, and pet shops located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fecal samples from individually housed birds were collected and subjected to centrifuge-flotation technique using saturated sugar solution. DNA was isolated from Cryptosporidium positive samples, and 18S subunit rDNA was amplified and processed using nested-polymerase chain reaction (PCR). To identify the protozoan species, the PCR amplicons were used fo

A coupled oscillatory model mimicking avian circadian regulatory systems.

Much evidence indicates that the pineal gland and thesuprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) are the primary pacemakers in the housesparrow, Passer domesticus. The interactions between the pineal andSCN predicted by the neuroendocrine loop model indicates that uncouplingwould cause the two oscillators to damp out in constant darkness. Basedupon the original neuroendocrine loop model, a mathematical frameworkof the house sparrow circadian regulatory organization that incorporatesdamping and co-inhibitory coupling has been formulated. The proposedmodel clearly indicates that two coupled oscillators must b

The fear hypothesis and tonic immobility (TI) modulation: Early studies in chickens.

The hypothesis that fear is involved in the mechanisms of tonic immobility (TI) has been supported by early studies conducted in newborn and adult chickens. The susceptibility to TI changes during development in parallel to other fear responses. TI duration increases following exposure before induction to threatening stimuli such as electric shock, loud sound, stuffed sparrow hawk, as well as in unfamiliar conditions applied before and/or during testing. TI duration and susceptibility are increased by prey/predator eye contact and inversely related with the predator distance. TI duration incre

Attraction of Culex pipiens to uropygial gland secretions does not explain feeding preference for American robins.

Culex pipiens, the endemic mosquito vector of West Nile virus in eastern North America, is responsible for maintenance of the virus in avian reservoir hosts, the most important of which appears to be the American robin. One reason for the greater involvement of robins is believed to be the feeding preference of Cx. pipiens, however, the basis of this preference is not understood. We tested the hypothesis that the species-specific chemical profile of avian uropygial gland secretions are used by Cx. pipiens as cues to locate birds and, therefore, may contribute to the observed feeding preference

Morphological and molecular characterization of Isospora neochmiae n. sp. in a captive-bred red-browed finch (Neochmia temporalis) (Latham, 1802).

A new Isospora (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) species is described from a single red-browed finch (Neochmia temporalis) (subspecies N. temporalis temporalis), that was part of a captive population in Western Australia. Sporulated oocysts of this isolate are spherical, 18.3 (18.2-18.9) × 18.2 (18.2-18.6) μm, with a shape index (length/width) of 1.0; and a smooth and bilayered oocyst wall, 1.2 μm thick (outer layer 0.9 μm, inner 0.3 μm). A polar granule is present, but the oocyst residuum and a micropyle are absent. The sporocysts are ovoid-shaped, 13.3 (9.5-16.4) × 8.6 (6.8-10.0) μm, with a shape in

Detection of Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, including three novel genotypes in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) collected from songbirds (Passeriformes) across Canada.

Lyme disease is reported across Canada, but pinpointing the source of infection has been problematic. In this three-year, bird-tick-pathogen study (2004-2006), 366 ticks representing 12 species were collected from 151 songbirds (31 passerine species/subspecies) at 16 locations Canada-wide. Of the 167 ticks/pools tested, 19 (11.4%) were infected with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.). Sequencing of the rrf-rrl intergenic spacer gene revealed four Borrelia genotypes: B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.) and three novel genotypes (BC genotype 1, BC genotype 2, BC genotype 3). All four genotyp

Do malaria parasites manipulate the escape behaviour of their avian hosts? An experimental study.

Escape behaviour is the behaviour that birds and other animals display when already caught by a predator. An individual exhibiting higher intensity of such anti-predator behaviour could have greater probabilities of escape from predators. Parasites are known to affect different aspects of host behaviour to increase their own fitness. Vector-transmitted parasites such as malaria parasites should gain by manipulating their hosts to enhance the probability of transmission. Several studies have shown that malaria parasites can manipulate their vectors leading to increased transmission success. How

Molecular and phylogenetic insights into haemosporidian parasites in wild bird populations of Northeast Thailand.

Haemosporidian parasites, including Plasmodium, Haemoproteus, and Leucocytozoon, are widespread avian pathogens that significantly affect bird health and population dynamics. Despite their ecological importance, molecular data on these parasites in avian populations from Northeast Thailand remain limited. This study investigated the prevalence, genetic diversity, and phylogenetic relationships of haemosporidian parasites infecting wild birds in Maha Sarakham Province, Thailand. A total of 107 wild bird samples, comprising 61 Zebra Doves (Geopelia striata) and 46 House Sparrows (Passer domestic
