The Assessment of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) Profile of Young Adults with Specific Learning Disorders: A Network Analysis Approach.

Specific learning disorders (SLD) affect 3-17% of the world's population and are associated with significant academic, emotional, and social challenges. This study compared Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) profiles and symptom networks between young adults with SLD and healthy controls. A total of 177 individuals with SLD (including dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, or combinations thereof) and 200 age-matched controls from Saudi Arabia completed the MMPI-2-RF. Scale scores were compared using independent-samples t-tests, and network analysis was emp

Psychiatric implications of language disorders and learning disabilities: risks and management.

This article reviews the relationship between different learning disabilities, language disorders, and the psychiatric disorders that are commonly associated with learning disabilities and language disorder: attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, depression, and conduct or antisocial personality disorder. The complex associations between language disorders and specific learning disabilities--dyslexia, nonverbal learning disorder, dyscalculia--and the various psychiatric disorders are discussed. Clinical vignettes are presented to highlight the impact of these disor

Comorbidity of learning disorders: prevalence and familial transmission.

BACKGROUND: In order to fully specify the profiles of risk and protective factors of developmental disorders, a better understanding of the conditions under which they co-occur is required. So far, empirical evidence on comorbidities of specific learning disorders in arithmetic, reading and spelling is scarce. METHODS: Prevalence and gender ratios of specific learning disorders in arithmetic (AD), reading (RD), and spelling (SD) and their co-occurrence were assessed in a large (N = 2586) population-based sample of elementary school children and in a subsample of 293 children with at least one

Neurodevelopmental and behavioural characteristics in learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder.

Specific learning disability in childhood is frequently associated with attention deficit disorder. The distinction between children with and without such comorbidity is often difficult to make. Our aim was to delineate the neurocognitive and behavioural differences between children with specific learning disabilities, with and without attention deficit. Students diagnosed with learning disability, mean age 8.3, 1.4 SD (N-50), and students with learning disability and attention deficit disorder, mean age 8.7, 1.4 SD (N-50), were assessed. The Paediatric Early Elementary Examination and the Agg

The overlap of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with other common mental disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The literature on the overlap (co-morbidity) of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with conduct disorder, specific learning disability, and anxiety disorders was reviewed to examine: (i) the evidence for ADHD being a syndrome distinct from the other conditions; and (ii) the evidence for co-morbid patterns representing meaningful subtypes of ADHD. METHODOLOGY: Narrative review of the literature. CONCLUSIONS: Conduct disorder is distinguished from ADHD by prognosis, patterns of association and familial aggregation. Pure' disorders are uncommon, however, and there is lit

[Learning disorders in neurofibromatosis type 1].

INTRODUCTION: Neurocognitive deficits and academic learning difficulties are the most common neurologic complication of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) in childhood and can be responsible for significant lifetime morbidity. Children with NF1 show impairments in attention, visual perception, language, executive function, academic skills, and behavior. Studies in animal models suggest that the learning disabilities associated with NF1 are caused by excessive Ras activity that leads to increased gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) inhibition and to decreased long-term potentiation. AIM: To describe th

Is there evidence for an emotion-related bias in verbal learning or memory in individuals putatively high at risk for mania?

There is broad evidence that individuals with bipolar disorder show deficits in verbal memory and learning. Such deficits seem to be independent of acute mood episodes and to manifest after the onset of the disorder. Less research has been conducted in relation to more specific memory functions, particularly to verbal memory and learning for emotional information. Therefore, the objective of the present study is to investigate if there is evidence for an affective memory bias in at-risk individuals before the onset of affective disorder. We applied the Emotional Auditive Verbal Learning Test t

Eye-tracking training improves the learning and memory of children with learning difficulty.

Children who experience difficulty in learning at mainstream schools usually are provided with remediation classes after school to facilitate their learning. The present study aims to evaluate an innovative eye-tracking training as possible alternative remediation. Our previous findings showed that children who received eye-tracking training demonstrated improved attention and inhibitory control, and the present randomized controlled study aims to evaluate if eye-tracking training can also enhance the learning and memory of children. Fifty-three primary school students with learning difficulty

[From brain imaging to good teaching? implicating from neuroscience for research on learning and instruction].

Psychiatric disorders in childhood and adolescence, in particular attention deficit disorder or specific learning disorders like developmental dyslexia and developmental dyscalculia, affect academic performance and learning at school. Recent advances in neuroscientific research have incited an intensive debate both in the general public and in the field of educational and instructional science as well as to whether and to what extent these new findings in the field of neuroscience might be of importance for school-related learning and instruction. In this review, we first summarize neuroscient

Response to Intervention and Specific Learning Disability Identification: Evidence From Tennessee.

Response to intervention (RTI) is a method for providing academic support to students and for identifying specific learning disabilities (SLDs). Using interrupted time series and hazard models, we examined if statewide RTI adoption in the U.S. state of Tennessee was associated with changes in rates of SLD and first-time SLD identification in elementary schools, and if these associations varied across student groups. Response to intervention was associated with an initial decline in the percentage of students with SLD in the state that continued over time, with larger decreases for students who

Learning disorders as a school health problem. Neurological and psychiatric aspects.

Broadened concepts of intellectual functions have shown that many varieties of mental subnormality may be preventable or subject to improvement with proper treatment. Many types of neurologic dysfunction are accompanied by learning disorders based on specific intellectual deficits.A more refined delineation of the higher cerebral functions of each child with a learning disorder provides the basis for improved specific remedial educational techniques. Such detailed assessment of higher functions of the nervous system can be greatly enhanced by the appropriate special evaluations carried out by

The Neural Correlates of Probabilistic Classification Learning in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Pilot Study.

Individuals suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been found to show deficits in implicitly learning probabilistic associations between events. Neuroimaging studies have associated these implicit learning deficits in OCD individuals with aberrant activation of the striatal system. Recent behavioral studies have highlighted that probabilistic classification learning (PCL) deficits in OCD individuals only occur in a disorder-specific context, while PCL remains intact in a neutral context. The neural correlates of implicit learning in an OCD-specific context, however, have not y

Transitive inference in a clinical childhood sample with a focus on autism spectrum disorder.

Transitive inference (TI) has a long history in the study of human development. There have, however, few pediatric studies that report clinical diagnoses have tested trial-and-error TI learning, in which participants infer item relations, rather than evaluate them explicitly from verbal descriptions. Children aged 8-10 underwent a battery of clinical assessments and received a range of diagnoses, potentially including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders (AD), specific learning disorders (SLD), and/or communication disorders (CD). Cognitive deficits are a matter of emotional context: inflexible strategy use mediates context-specific learning impairments in OCD.

The present study examines the interplay between cognitive deficits and emotional context in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and social phobia (SP). Specifically, this study examines whether the inflexible use of efficient learning strategies in an emotional context underlies impairments in probabilistic classification learning (PCL) in OCD, and whether PCL impairments are specific to OCD. Twenty-three participants with OCD, 30 participants with SP and 30 healthy controls completed a neutral and an OCD-specific PCL task. OCD participants failed to adopt efficient learning strategies and sh
