OBJECTIVE: We adapted a behavioral procedure that has been used extensively with normal-hearing (NH) infants, the visual habituation (VH) procedure, to assess deaf infants' discrimination and attention to speech.
METHODS: Twenty-four NH 6-month-olds, 24 NH 9-month-olds, and 16 deaf infants at various ages before and following cochlear implantation (CI) were tested in a sound booth on their caregiver's lap in front of a TV monitor. During the habituation phase, each infant was presented with a repeating speech sound (e.g. 'hop hop hop') paired with a visual display of a checkerboard pattern on

The syllable repetitions of 24 child and eight teenage stutterers were investigated to assess whether the vowels neutralize and, if so, what causes this. In both groups of speakers, the vowel in CV syllable repetitions and the following fluent vowel were excised from conversational speech samples. Acoustic analyses showed the formant frequencies of vowels in syllable repetitions to be appropriate for the intended vowel and the duration of the dysfluent vowels to be shorter than those of the fluent vowels for both groups of speakers. The intensity of the fluent vowels was greater than that of t

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent otitis media is commonly encountered in children before 3 years of age. Conductive hearing loss up to 40 dB is frequently associated with suppurative otitis media. Good hearing is believed to be critical to the development of normal language. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of recurrent otitis media on auditory perception and speech.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The experimental group consisted of 33 children with a history of at least three episodes of acute otitis media before 2 years of age. A control group of 29 children experienced one or fewer episodes

Changes in auditory threshold, psychophysical tuning curves, and speech perception (in both quiet and noise) were monitored over a 3-hr period following the ingestion of glycerol. All listeners had sensorineural hearing loss secondary to Menière's disease. Findings were characterized by large intersubject variability and in general did not show a clear relation between changes in threshold, frequency resolution, and speech perception.

Past research has shown that short-term exposure to speech carrying certain acoustic statistics transfers robustly to speech production. However, all studies reporting such transfer have used auditory repetition tasks. Therefore, it is unclear whether perception-production transfer in the acoustic-phonetic domain extends to tasks without an auditory model to probe production. We answer this question in two experiments. Experiment 1 shows that people read aloud the words BEER and PEER differently after exposure to auditory samples of "beer" and "peer" drawn from a distribution of standard Ameri

Hearing aids have improved speech intelligibility but not speech emotion perception in older adults with hearing loss. Hearing loss has also been linked to altered brain responses to emotional non-speech sounds, potentially contributing to the speech emotion perception deficits even under aided listening. While fMRI requires hearing aid removal due to metal incompatibility, fNIRS is silent and hearing-aid compatible, creating a novel opportunity to identify neural processes during aided listening. We leveraged fNIRS to examine how hearing aids affect brain function in experienced hearing-aid u

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Vocal tremor (VT) is a difficult to treat voice problem characterized by periodic modulations of fundamental frequency and vocal intensity. VT is easier to perceive during sustained phonation as compared to connected speech. Previous studies have demonstrated improvements in perception of VT during sustained phonation after undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) for treatment of essential tremor. However, few studies have investigated perception of VT in connected speech contexts. The purpose of this preliminary study was to examine differences in perception of VT sever

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implant (CI) users frequently complain about speech quality perception (SQP). In patients undergoing cochlear implantation for single-sided deafness, there is concern that poor SQP from the implanted ear will negatively impact binaural (CI + normal hearing [NH]) SQP. In this study, we investigate if binaural SQP is measurably different than unimplanted NH alone.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Tertiary care center.
METHODS: Fifteen unilateral CI users with NH in the contralateral ear completed the validated Columbia Speech Quality Instrument. This instrumen

Drug addiction can cause severe damage to the human brain, leading to significant problems in cognitive processing, such as irritability, speech distortions, and exaggeration of negative stimuli. Speech plays a fundamental role in social interaction, including both the production and perception. The ability to perceive communicative functions conveyed through speech is crucial for successful interpersonal communication and the maintaining good social relationships. However, due to the limited number of previous studies, it remains unclear whether the cognitive disorder caused by drug addiction

OBJECTIVES: Speech perception training can be a highly effective intervention to improve perception and language abilities in children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Most studies of speech perception training, however, only measure gains immediately following training. Only a minority of cases include a follow-up assessment after a period without training. A critical unanswered question was whether training-related benefits are retained for a period of time after training has stopped. A primary goal of this investigation was to determine whether children retained training-related benefits 4

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine whether children with severe hearing loss (HL) who use hearing aids (HAs) may experience added value in the perception of speech, language development, and executive function (EF) compared to children who are hard of hearing (HH) or children who are deaf and who use cochlear implants (CIs) and would benefit from CIs over HAs. The results contribute to the ongoing debate concerning CI criteria. We addressed the following research question to achieve this aim: Do children who are HH or deaf with CIs perform better than children with severe HL with HAs with respe

OBJECTIVE: In Japan, the 57S and 67S single syllable lists have been used to test speech perception in cochlear implant (CI) users. However, due to advances in implants and processors, these lists have become too simple for CI users. In 2019, the Japan Otological Society created a new list, referred to as the iCI2004. The objective of this study was to compare the performance of these lists.
METHODS: The Japanese single syllable speech perception tests, iCI2004, 57S, and 67S, were administered to 70 patients with CI users. The effects of single syllable characteristics on the test scores were

Cochlear implants (CIs) are neuroprostheses that partially restore hearing for people with severe-to-profound hearing loss. While CIs can provide good speech perception in quiet listening situations for many, they fail to do so in environments with interfering sounds for most listeners. Previous research suggests that this is due to detrimental interaction effects between CI electrode channels, limiting their function to convey frequency-specific information, but evidence is still scarce. In this study, an experimental manipulation called spectral blurring was used to increase channel interact

OBJECTIVES: To assess the audiological outcomes and speech performance among children with simultaneous bilateral cochlear implants (CIs).
METHODS: This was a retrospective case review of 41 patients with prelingual deafness who failed a hearing aid trial and received simultaneous bilateral CIs. Ear-specific responses in terms of pure tone average (PTA), speech reception thresholds (SRTs), and speech discrimination score (SDS) were recorded for both ears of all patients.
RESULTS: The PTA and SRT for the right and left CIs were comparable (P-value = 0.861 and P-value = 0.524, respectively). T

While listening to recorded sentences with a sound-field level of 65 dB SPL, 24 adults with hearing-aid experience used the "Goldilocks" explore-and-select procedure to adjust level and spectrum of amplified speech to preference. All participants started adjustment from the same generic response. Amplification was provided by a custom-built Master Hearing Aid with online processing of microphone input. Primary goals were to assess the effects of including a formal speech-perception test between repeated self-adjustments and of adding multitalker babble (signal-to-noise ratio +6 dB) during self

Audiovisual (AV) integration deficits have been proposed to underlie difficulties in speech perception in Asperger's syndrome (AS). It is not known, if the AV deficits are related to alterations in sensory processing at the level of unisensory processing or at levels of conjoint multisensory processing. Functional Magnetic-resonance images (MRI) was performed in 16 adult subjects with AS and 16 healthy controls (HC) matched for age, gender, and verbal IQ as they were exposed to disyllabic AV congruent and AV incongruent nouns. A simple semantic categorization task was used to ensure subjects'
