Differential tolerance for the judgement of dysfluencies as stuttered speech in native and non-native speech-language pathologists.

PURPOSE: Accurate diagnosis of stuttering requires careful observation by trained professionals. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) typically identify stuttering using a perceptual judgement. However, it is unclear if this perception is based on the amount or the type of dysfluencies. Hence, the study aimed to determine the frequency of syllable/part-word repetitions judged as stuttered and to determine if the listener's language influences their judgement of fluency. METHOD: Narrative samples of a Kannada-speaking child who stutters containing 1 %, 3 %, 5 %, 10 %, and 15 % of syllable or pa

The latest development of the DELAD project for sharing corpora of speech disorders.

Corpora of speech of individuals with communication disorders (CSD) are invaluable resources for education and research, but they are costly and hard to build and difficult to share for various reasons. DELAD, which means 'shared' in Swedish, is a project initiated by Professors Nicole Müller and Martin Ball in 2015 that aims to address this issue by establishing a platform for researchers to share datasets of speech disorders with interested audiences. To date four workshops have been held, where selected participants, covering various expertise including researchers in clinical phonetics and

Concurrent Validity of the Fluharty Preschool Speech and Language Screening Test-Second Edition at Age 3: Comparison With Four Diagnostic Measures.

Purpose The aim of this study was to examine the concurrent validity of the Fluharty Preschool Speech and Language Screening Test-Second Edition (Fluharty-2; Fluharty, 2001) for mass screenings of language at age 3 years. Method Participants were sixty-two 3-year-old children, 31 who had failed and 31 who had passed the Fluharty-2. Performance on the screening was compared to 4 diagnostic measures: Structured Photographic Expressive Language Test-Preschool, Second Edition; mean length of utterance in morphemes (MLUm), finite verb morphology composite, and Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn). [Developmental aspects of oral language in craniosynostosis].

BACKGROUND: Aspects of language development in craniosynostosis. Craniosynostosis (premature fusion of the cranial sutures) has an incidence of 0.4 to 1/1000 newborns. Etiology for this congenital anomaly includes environmental and genetic factors. Regarding the form of presentation, it can occur in its isolated form or associated to other congenital anomalies. For this last group, acrocephalosyndactilies are observed. These are genetically determined conditions which present phenotypic similarity, including the following syndromes: Saethre-Chotzen, Apert, Crouzon e Pfeiffer. As all of these c

Systemic concepts in speech-language treatment.

While systemic concepts are well known in many professions, a systemic paradigm is relatively new to most speech-language pathologists. Five systems concepts that apply to current practices in speech-language pathology are described and illustrated. The concepts relate to the influences of context or environment, relationships, family structure, isomorphism, and the attribution of meaning.

Contemporary clinical conversations about stuttering: How to keep up with stuttering treatment research.

PURPOSE: To discuss how speech-language pathologists can keep up with stuttering treatment research. To inform junior clinicians and students of speech-language pathology about this matter. METHOD: The issue was discussed by two university researchers and two speech-language pathologists who provide clinical services. Written conversational turns in an exchange were limited to 100 words each. RESULT: There was agreement among the group that keeping up to date with stuttering research is essential for speech-language pathologists, and to do so requires a basic understanding of research method

A Tutorial on Core Lexicon: Development, Use, and Application.

Evidence suggests that discourse-level assessment in aphasia should be implemented within clinical settings. However, existing discourse measures that are time and labor intensive in process prevent speech-language pathologists from applying such measures to their clinical practices. This article provides an overview of a lexicon-based analysis (core lexicon measure) that recently was developed and investigated for clinical usability. A new approach to core lexicon measures provides a simple scoring method with short instructions, which may be practical and time efficient for assessment and ma

Clinical education: the supervisory process.

This investigation of the supervisory process was designed to extend the first author's (MMcG) previous work that had resulted in categories for analysis of clinical competence in student therapists. The supervisory interactions between five students and their clinicians were video-taped and analysed. Participants' perceptions of the dyad were rated using visual analogue scales. The findings indicated that clinicians' verbal comments could be assigned to the categories previously identified. A further analysis of three of these categories revealed that seven interview strategies were used by t

Early perceptual strategies for the replication of consonants from polysyllabic lexical models.

Perceptual processing strategies for the selection and organization of consonants for early replicas of polysyllabic models were investigated as a related study to the classification of productive strategies (Klein, 1981). The present study investigated the ways in which selected word factors (stress level and serial position of the syllable) provided facilitating cues for the production of polysyllabic words. The original procedure involved collecting a language sample from four children (ages 20-24 months) as each informally interacted with an adult during a play activity that included the m

NORAM: calibration and operational advice for measuring nasality in cleft palate patients.

This study was carried out to evaluate the NORAM (Nasal-Oral-RAtio-Meter), developed at the Department of Speech Communication and Music Acoustics, RIT. The speech samples used were the recorded speech of normal and nasally deviant speakers. NORAM measures the total speech time and the duration of the nasalized portions, it also calculates the ratio between these two values. The signals are picked up by two contact microphones, one placed on the alar cartilage of the nose and the other on the outside of the lamina of the thyroid cartilage. They are compared and the segment is rated as nasal, i

Increasing Educator Resources for Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia Using a Knowledge-to-Action Framework: The Development of DementiaBank Grand Rounds.

PURPOSE: An educational gap exists in content knowledge and clinical education for speech-language pathologists concerning the treatment and assessment of cognitive-communication disorders from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). This gap may result in less effective speech-language pathology services for this population. The overarching goal of this project was to enhance graduate speech-language pathology education about MCI and dementia due to AD to improve the quality of future service providers. METHOD: To achieve this goal, this project had two o
