Epithelioid hemangioendotheliomas are uncommon vascular neoplasms and their spinal location is even rarer. We report clinical course of a 31-year-old man with an epithelioid hemangioendothelioma at the cranio-cervical junction. A cervical magnetic resonance imaging revealed tumor that caused posterior cervical cord compression. C1,2,3 total laminectomy and surgical excision of the tumor was performed. Postoperative external beam radiation was performed on the surgical field especially around the right vertebral artery. At 2-year follow-up there was no neurological deficit and no tumor recurren

Imaging of the brachial plexus and peripheral nerves is challenging in the pediatric patient. Magnetic resonance imaging is the modality of choice as it is not invasive and demonstrates proximal and distal lesions. This may be used to detect nerve root avulsions, nerve ruptures, pseudo-meningoceles, brachial plexus scarring, post-traumatic neuromas, brachial plexus edema, spinal cord damage, abnormalities of the shoulder joint, trauma, neoplasms, and infection. Imaging allows diagnosis and careful preoperative evaluation of children suffering from brachial plexus injuries and peripheral nerve

Central nervous system manifestations occur in 10 to 20% of patients with disseminated histoplasmosis. Additionally, histoplasmosis may be the cause of cases of chronic meningitis in patients with no other evidence for dissemination. Histoplasmosis may also cause cerebral or spinal cord mass lesions resembling neoplasms or abscesses, and encephalitis. Diagnosis of chronic meningitis or mass lesions caused by H. capsulatum may be difficult and involves careful analysis of serologic tests for antibodies, cultures and tests for HPA in body fluids. Amphotericin B remains the treatment of choice, b

Torticollis is a clinical sign of either CNS or musculoskeletal dysfunction. Thorough clinical and neuroradiographic evaluation is indicated for determination of the source, course, and exact nature of the deformity before a considered approach to surgical management is undertaken. Torticollis of neurogenic origin is managed by surgical decompression of the brainstem or cervical spinal cord when indicated, as in the presence of hydrocephalus, the Arnold-Chiari malformation, syringobulbia , syringomyelia, colloid cyst of the third ventricle, or neoplasms in the third ventricle, posterior fossa,

BACKGROUND: Ependymomas are the most common glial neoplasms in the spinal cord. However, spinal cord ependymomas presenting with regional dissemination along the neuroaxis are rare, with a yet undetermined standard of care. We retrospectively evaluated the management and outcomes of patients who were diagnosed with spinal ependymoma with regional metastases at presentation (SERMP).
METHODS: Between 2002 and 2012, 16 patients with regionally metastatic spinal ependymomas were diagnosed and treated. The patients were retrospectively divided into two groups according to tumor grading and histolo

A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dog was presented because of a 10-d history of progressive vomiting, inappetence, and lethargy, with mild neurologic signs. Fine-needle aspirates of splenic nodules seen on ultrasound were suggestive of a carcinoma. On autopsy, a disseminated neoplasm was present in the lung, spleen, and adrenal glands. Additionally, there was a Chiari-like malformation of the skull with corresponding syringomyelia of the cranial spinal cord. Histologically, the neoplasm was comprised of a pleomorphic population of round cells with a high mitotic rate. Cells stained positive for

Diastematomyelia, a complete or incomplete sagittal division of the neural axis into halves, is usually accompanied by a number of other malformations. However, true teratomas arising in dorsal juxtaposition to the spinal axis and associated with diastematomyelia are extremely rare. In this paper, two infants with this neoplastic-malformative complex are discussed. The two most prevalent hypotheses in the pathogenesis of diastematomyelia are reviewed. The hypothesis of a persistent neurenteric canal continues to be generally accepted, but, until more is known about the pathogenesis of extragon

Giant cell tumours (GCT) are relatively rare neoplasms, most often benign. They are characterized by their local aggression. We report two observations of GCT, the spine in a 51-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy. They were revealed by spinal pain and cord compression for the second observation. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed osteolysis of the body and vertebral arch of L5 for the first and a process affecting the vertebral body and medullary canal of T6-T7 with spinal cord compression for the second case. The diagnosis was confirmed by histological examination in

A 10-yr-old male intact Asian small clawed otter (Aonyx cinerus) was presumptively diagnosed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry with lymphangiosarcoma after bony destruction of the ischium and spinal column from local tumor invasion had caused progressive signs of hind limb lameness and paresis/paralysis, which led to humane euthanasia. At necropsy, the primary tumor was identified as a flocculent mass present under the caudal lumbar vertebrae. Multiple nerves were seen to run from the spinal cord into the wall of the mass. This mass had locally invaded the surrounding muscle, vertebra

Primary osseous neoplasms of the thoracic and lumbar spine are uncommon lesions. Between 1965 and 1982, of 1971 patients with musculoskeletal neoplasms, only 29 (1.5%) had primary osseous tumors in these locations. There were eight children and 21 adults. Back pain was the most common complaint in 25 patients (86%), and neurologic symptoms or deficits were present in 16 patients (55%). All lesions were visible on routine spine roentgenograms, while computed tomography and myelography demonstrated spinal canal encroachment and extradural spinal cord compression in 19 patients (66%). The histolo

STUDY DESIGN: The article presents a case in which Brown-Sèquard syndrome resulted from a painless C3-C4 disc herniation.
OBJECTIVE: To raise spinal surgeons' awareness of this unusual clinical problem.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Brown-Sèquard syndrome involves ipsilateral loss of motor function combined with contralateral loss of pain and temperature sensation. Brown-Sèquard syndrome is commonly seen in the setting of spinal trauma or an extramedullary spinal neoplasm, but rarely it can be caused by a herniated cervical disc.
METHODS: A 46-year-old man presented with progressive numbness

Introduction Intracranial tumourstumors arise from the brain or its surrounding tissues. Tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) are estimated to be approximately 2% of all new cancers. In India, they constitute about 1.9% of all tumors. Extramedullary lesions, most commonly benign meningioma, account for 70 to 80% of spinal cord tumors. The objective of this study is to characterize histological subtypes, age and gender distribution, and WHO grading of intracranial and spinal tumors in a tertiary care hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. Material and method A retrospective study was condu

Lymphoma is one of the most common neoplasms in the dog. Despite its prevalence and the increasing use of advanced diagnostic imaging in veterinary patients only few reports of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in spinal lymphoma have been published to date. The purpose of this retrospective case series study was to describe the MRI findings in dogs with confirmed lymphoma affecting the spine and/or paraspinal soft tissues. Medical records were searched for patients that had MRI of the spine and a diagnosis of lymphoma during the period of 2005-2015. Data recorded from retrieved MRI st

This paper describes the clinical manifestations and diagnostic studies in 26 children with intraspinal metastases of solid malignant neoplasms. The site of the metastatic lesion was verified in all cases by lumbar and/or cisternal myelography. Therapy consisted of Cobalt50 irradiation in 20 patients, of whom 11 (55%) manifested neurologic improvement. Recovery of ambulatory function was most favorable in lesiosn that involved the conus medullaris and cauda equina and spared the cervical and thoracic spinal cord. Early recognition and initiation of treatment before severe neurologic dysfunctio

BACKGROUND: Spinal meningiomas account for 25% of spinal tumors, with the majority being intradural neoplasms. Extradural spinal meningiomas, however, represent only 2-3.5% of cases. These tumors tend to be more aggressive, often invading neural structures, particularly the brachial plexus. This results in faster progression, higher recurrence rates, and challenges in achieving complete resection.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 52-year-old male presented with right-hand muscle hypotrophy and motor deficits. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a large extradural mass from C7 to D3, compressing neur

Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RT) are highly aggressive malignant primitive neoplasms that commonly occur in children younger than 2 years of age. The prognosis is generally dismal with a median survival time of <1 year. The majority of AT/RT occur in the posterior fossa and less frequently the supratentorium. Primary pediatric spinal AT/RT are exceedingly rare and only 15 cases have been reported to date. Here we report a very unusual case of primary spinal AT/RT extensively involving the spinal cord from T11 down to the cauda equina. In this patient, the tumor was highly aggressive a
