OBJECTIVE: We performed a retrospective cohort study to investigate the prevalence of and risk factors for asymptomatic spondylotic cervical spinal stenosis (ASCSS) in the setting of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS).
METHODS: A total of 114 patients with a diagnosis of LSS without cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy were grouped into ASCSS and non-ASCSS groups. The medical data and radiological parameters, including age, sex, body mass index, Charlson comorbidity index, symptom duration, redundant nerve roots, dural sac cross-sectional area (DCSA), facet joint angle, lumbar lordosis angle (LLA)

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: It is controversial whether lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) itself contributes to low back pain (LBP). Lower truncal skeletal muscle mass, spinopelvic malalignment, intervertebral disc degeneration, and endplate abnormalities are thought to be related to LBP. However, whether these factors cause LBP in patients with LSS is unclear.
PURPOSE: To identify factors associated with LBP in patients with LSS.
STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: Cross-sectional design.
PATIENT SAMPLE: A total of 260 patients (119 men and 141 women, average age 72.8 years) with neurogenic claudication caused by LS

BACKGROUND: Although lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) often coexists with other degenerative conditions, few studies have fully assessed possible contributing factors for low back pain (LBP) in patients with LSS. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with the severity of LBP in patients with LSS.
METHODS: The patients with neurogenic claudication caused by LSS, which was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were included in this cross-sectional study. Data included ratings of LBP, buttock and leg pain, and numbness on a numerical rating scale (NRS), 36-item Short-F

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a common and important spinal surgical problem. Currently there is no universally accepted quantitative approach to the radiological measurement of LSS. LSS can be described qualitatively with reference to facet and ligamentous hypertrophy, lack of perineural or intraforaminal fat, and reduced CSF around the cauda equina. Quantitative descriptions do exist e.g., lumbar canal antero-posterior diameter, but these are unidimensional and do not consider normal variation in anatomy. We propose a universal and individualised measurement system for the quan

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the effectiveness of core stability exercises correlates with the severity of spinal stenosis in patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis.
METHODS: Forty-two patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis treated in the department of orthopedics of our hospital between May 2013 and January 2016 were included in the study. All the patients performed core stability exercises once daily for six weeks, and the clinical outcomes were evaluated using Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score and self-reported walking capacity. The anteroposterior osseo

AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine the differences in spinal imaging characteristics between subjects with or without lumbar developmental spinal stenosis (DSS) in a population-based cohort.
METHODS: This was a radiological analysis of 2,387 participants who underwent L1-S1 MRI. Means and ranges were calculated for age, sex, BMI, and MRI measurements. Anteroposterior (AP) vertebral canal diameters were used to differentiate those with DSS from controls. Other imaging parameters included vertebral body dimensions, spinal canal dimensions, disc degeneration scores, and facet joint ori

BACKGROUND: The Fukushima Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Scale (FLS-25) is a disease-specific patient-reported outcome measure developed to assess the symptoms and functional impact of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). However, no Korean version of the FLS-25 has been validated to date. This study aimed to assess the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of a Korean adaptation of the FLS-25 (K-FLS-25) using a structured cross-cultural adaptation process.
METHODS: The original FLS-25 questionnaire was translated into Korean following established guidelines for cross-cultural adaptation, including forw

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spinal stenosis is caused by various pathological conditions. With the diagnostic tools available, a precise classification of the condition should be made, which enables a consistent and appropriate therapeutic approach.
OBJECTIVES: In the present article, the currently used classifications of lumbar spinal stenosis are discussed and the diagnostic tools are presented, focussing on the imaging descriptions of morphological changes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article is based on a PubMed literature search of the past 60 years and our own experiences.
RESULTS: Lumbar spin

One third of patients with achondroplasia develop spinal stenosis requiring surgical intervention. However, this condition rarely develops before the age of 15 years. The goal of the current study was to identify anatomical factors and clinical symptoms associated with early presentation of lumbar stenosis in such patients. The charts of 22 pediatric patients with achondroplasia who developed lumbar spinal stenosis requiring surgery (subjects) were reviewed retrospectively, focusing on clinical presentation, physical examination findings, and radiographic data. These findings were compared wit

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a common condition in elderly patients and also one of the most common reasons to perform spinal surgery at an advanced age. Disc degeneration, facet degeneration and hypertrophy, and ligamentum flavum hypertrophy and calcification usually participate in the genesis of a stenotic condition in the elderly. These changes can lead to symptoms by themselves or decompensate a preexisting narrow canal. Although some lesions are more central or more lateral, this classic dichotomy is less present in the elderly patient, in whom the degenerative process usually encroaches bot

Spinal stenosis, which may be congenital/developmental or acquired in origin, is a narrowing of the spinal canal, nerve root canals, or intervertebral foramina. Compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots may lead to structural neuronal damage, neuronal ischemia or edema, and axonal transport block. The most frequent symptom in patients with spinal stenosis is back pain and some have classic neurogenic claudication. We have performed urodynamic evaluations in 2 patients with combined cervical and lumbar spinal stenosis. A girl with achondroplastic dwarfism had urgency incontinence and detrus

To evaluate the width of the spinal canal when diagnosing spinal stenosis, 91 patients older than 59 years of age when undergoing myelography were studied. Using a sagittal diameter of 11 mm as border for the diagnosis of spinal stenosis, it was found that 31 of the 66 patients with spinal claudication, suspicion of spinal claudication and sciatic pain fulfilled this criterion and that 3/25 of the control group and those with atypic symptoms had a sagittal diameter of 11 mm or less. Five patients showed a complete block on the myelogram, and all of them had a typical spinal claudication. The s

Approximately 80% of patients with spinal stenosis return to their usual occupations following decompressive laminectomy. It is essential to recognize distinctive features of stenosis on myelography and in accordance with the individual patients' clinical problems, to carry out an adequate decompression.
