Cryptosporidium is a protozoal coccidian parasite that produces among other diseases chronic watery diarrhea. The extent of the diseases is mostly dependent on the immune status of the individual. Mortality in immunosuppressed and AIDS individuals due to the diarrhea illness is nearly 80%. Although no effective treatment is available yet, promising results have been related to the use of Spiramycin, Erythromycin, Somatostatin and its analogues, and zidovudine.

BACKGROUND: For the first time, 2 cases highlight the fact that, in the event of cutaneous adverse drug reactions under treatment associating 2 drugs, a positive test with one of the 2 does not authorize further readministration of the remaining drug without hospital surveillance.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A man had urticaria during treatment with pristinamycin subsequently replaced by ceftriaxon. All the patch-tests with synergistins were positive, whereas patch-tests, prick-tests and intradermal tests with betalactams were negative. The oral challenge with ceftriaxon was positive. A woman takin

(1) Macrolides are an alternative to beta-lactam agents for treating uncomplicated community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, sinusitis and throat infections. The choice of macrolides is based mainly on the risk of interactions, which is lowest with spiramycin. (2) Telithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic derived from erythromycin. It was first marketed in France in 2002, for the above indications. (3) Telithromycin is no more effective than the antibiotics with which it has been compared, namely amoxicillin and clarithromycin in non life-threatening pneumonia; amo

SummaryTo date, very little is known about avian mycoplasma infections in Tunisia. Mycoplasma gallisepticum is one of the most economically significant pathogen for poultry in Tunisia and worldwide. Based on the paucity of data regarding the genetic profiles and antibacterial behavior of M. gallisepticum strains in Tunisia, the present study was conducted. Genetic typing and phylogenetic relationships of 40 M. gallisepticum strains (20 Tunisian isolates, 19 international strains collection, and S6 reference strain) were investigated by gene-targeted sequencing (GTS) using 4 loci ( pvpA , mgc2

Polymicrobial aerobic and anaerobic flora are responsible for pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). The most frequent pathogens appear to be Neisseria gonorrhoea and anaerobic bacteria (most commonly anaerobic cocci and Bacteroides sp.). Recent studies have demonstrated the recovery of Chlamydia trachomatis in up to a third of these infections. Although N. gonorrhoea is frequently recovered from cervical cultures, it is less commonly recovered from intra-abdominal sites. Recent studies have demonstrated the in-vivo synergistic relationship between N. gonorrhoeae and Bacteroides fragilis. The grow

Chlamydia psittaci ‒ related community-acquired pneumonia associated to acute myocarditis was diagnosed in a young man with no medical history, and a professional exposition to birds. The diagnosis was confirmed with positive specific polymerase chain reaction in bronchoalveolar lavage. The patient was treated with spiramycin for two weeks with anti-inflammatory treatment for myocarditis for three months. Clinical and biological improvement was rapidly observed followed by normalization of electrocardiogram and chest CT scan. No relapse was reported for over a two-year follow-up.

Cryptosporidium has been found to be a common cause of gastroenteritis during the last years. The natural course of the disease in immunocompromised patients is often met by serious complications. A general therapy recommendation has not been reported so far. We report of a two-year-old boy, who was immunocompromised by a multidrug cytostatic chemotherapy. The patient suffered from a long lasting most severe gastroenteritis, caused by cryptosporidium. There was a good clinical response to spiramycin, a treatment suggested in the literature.

Carrimycin (CAM) is a new antibiotics with isovalerylspiramycins (ISP) as its major components. It is produced by Streptomyces spiramyceticus integrated with a heterogenous 4″-O-isovaleryltransferase gene (ist). However, the present CAM producing strain carries two resistant gene markers, which makes it difficult for further genetic manipulation. In addition, isovalerylation of spiramycin (SP) could be of low efficiency as the ist gene is located far from the SP biosynthesis gene cluster. In this study, ist and its positive regulatory gene acyB2 were inserted into the downstream of orf54 gene

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is the most commonly found N-nitrosamine in pharmaceutical drug substances (DSs) and drug products. This paper investigates the potential of macrolide antibiotics, containing dimethylamino group, as precursors for NDMA formation in pharmaceuticals. A direct injection GC-MS/MS method was qualified for the quantification of NDMA in various macrolide DSs and film-coated tablets, and the use of pyrrolidine as a scavenger was further emphasized. As an alternative method, GC-MS/MS method with solid phase microextraction was tested, which proved to be unsuitable due to t

Toxoplasmosis is caused by a coccidian parasite, Toxoplasma gondii. The parasite is highly prevalent both in humans and in warm-blooded animals. Cat family animals are definitive host, and these animals excrete the infective oocysts in their feces. Humans, though not definitive host, get infection by consuming water or food contaminated with cat feces. Rarely, infection can also take place through transfusing the infected blood, through transplantation of infected organs, or transplacentally from infected mother to fetus. Transplacental infection can cause congenital infection with varied degr

Today, a decreasing number of infants with prenatal toxoplasmosis present with clinical signs of severe, generalised infection and cerebral involvement. The favourable clinical outcome - mild or subclinical infection - is considered to be an effect of early maternofetal treatment with spiramycin and pyrimethamine/sulfadiazine (PS). However, a Cochrane Review and a recently published European multicentre study on congenital toxoplasmosis did not only question this positive effect but also the efficiency of a postnatal long-term therapy. Both studies caused much confusion among neonatologists an

AIM: Prevention and treatment of congenital toxoplasmosis are still a matter of debate among obstetricians, pediatricians and epidemiologists. There is no consensus about antenatal screening and diagnostic tests, nor there is about treatment for presumed infection in pregnancy. As an example of this type of organisation for health care delivery, a regional model has been promoted as a multidisciplinary approach for prenatal diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis. The model had been designed on the national guidelines of the National Health Institute (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, ISS).

A child suffering from the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) with intestinal cryptosporidiosis is reported. The child presented with profuse diarrhoea up to 15 episodes a day over a period of one week. Management was with intravenous rehydration and oral spiramycin. Diagnosis of intestinal cryptosporidiosis requires examination of multiple stool specimens by several concentration and staining procedures which aid in the visualisation of the oocysts. In the absence of an effective treatment for cryptosporidiosis, the cornerstone of management is mainly supportive therapy.

The in vitro activity of 15 antibiotics was tested with 30-90 Mycoplasma bovis representative strains of bovine lung pathology in France. The distribution of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) is homogeneous with low values for spectinomycin, lincomycin, tylosin, gentamicin and baytril, intermediate for chloramphenicol and neomycin, high for nalidixic acid, Flumequine and erythromycin. The MIC distribution is heterogeneous with intermediate values for spiramycin and tetracyclines, and high values for streptomycin. For the later antibiotics, the heterogeneity of the susceptibility suggests

A case of hypomelia, hypotrichosis and facial hemangioma (pseudothalidomide S.) is presented, which according to bibliography consulted, is the first case in Spain and the tenth mentioned in world literature. A differential diagnosis with dysostosis is proposed. Authors described characteristic traits of the patient and indicate differences with those presented in previous publications emphasizing association with cleft lip, absence of eyes anomalies, and normal neurological development. Cryptosporidiosis is a frequent cause of Traveler's diarrhea in children. In its acute or chronic form, this diarrhea is often accompanied by dehydration and accompanying deterioration in health. Diagnosis may be reached by inspection of the stools, for parasites, utilising specific but simple procedures. The latter tests should be carried out by the laboratory in addition to the routine parasitological examination. Prognosis is good in immunocompetent children since the clinical signs spontaneously regress within about a month. The only treatment consists in symptomatic treatment of diarrhea.

Congenital toxoplasmosis has become rare in France. Primary prevention is based on hygiene and dietary measures. Serological screening is mandatory in France. When maternal infection occurs in pregnancy, prophylactic treatment (spiramycin for first trimester; pyrimethamine and sulfonamide for second or third-trimester infections) reduces the risk of placental transmission. Prenatal diagnosis is performed by amniocentesis. In case of congenital toxoplasmosis, prompt treatment with pyrimethamine and sulphonamide reduces the risks of brain or eye damage; long-term follow-up of the child is requir

Meningococcosis are nowadays an health problem because their incidence rate (38 cases/100,000 people in 1986 in Mahdia region) and a high death rate (40%) due to fulminating forms. At the occasion of a prospective study during the first six months of 1987, the authors report the emergence of C serogroup (21%), the smallness of A serogroup (6.50%) and the predominance of B serogroup (68%). Improving level of living, good prophylaxy based on spiramycin, development of use of meningococcal vaccine are advisable means to control epidemic outbreaks.

Toxoplasmosis, a zoonotic infection caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, remains a significant global health concern, with seroprevalence exceeding 60% in specific regions. Given the limitations of current therapies for chronic stages, this study investigated the therapeutic efficacy of Moringa oleifera (MO) extract and MO-loaded copper-based metal-organic frameworks (MO@L-AA-Cu) in a murine model. Sixty-five female Swiss albino mice were utilized. Following the establishment of a negative control group (n=5), the remaining mice were orally inoculated with 20 cysts of the T. gondii ME49
