[On gastric corpus-pyloric antrum inhibitory reflexes (author's transl)].

Twenty eight adults dogs fasted over night were used under Nembutal anesthesia. The influences of distension of the pouch which was made on gatric corpus on the motility of gastric pyloric antrum were investigated. The following results were obtained. 1) Any changes were not observed on the motility on gastric pyloric antrum by distension of gastric corpus pouch by a pressure of 20 mmHg, but a stepwise elevation of the lumen pressure of the pouch from 50 mmHg to 100 mmGh, elicited a remarkable relaxation of the tone and inhibition of motility of the pyloric antrum. These inhibitory responses w

Artificial intelligence-enhanced navigation for nerve recognition and surgical education in laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Devices that help educate young doctors and enable safe, minimally invasive surgery are needed. Eureka is a surgical artificial intelligence (AI) system that can intraoperatively highlight loose connective tissues (LCTs) in the dissected layers and nerves in the surgical field displayed on a monitor. In this study, we examined whether AI navigation (AIN) with Eureka can assist trainees in recognizing nerves during colorectal surgery. METHODS: In left-sided colorectal surgery (n = 51, between July 2023 and February 2024), Eureka was connected to the laparoscopic system side by side

Is 5-HT a mediator in the motor control of the feline pylorus?

Since serotonin (5-HT) is a potent spasmogen of pyloric smooth muscle in vivo, and since it is released on electrical stimulation of extrinsic nerves to the gut, the amine may mediate the excitatory motor responses elicited by vagal or splanchnic stimulation. In this study in cats intra-arterial administration of 5-HT to the stomach evoked a dose-dependent pyloric contraction, which was efficiently antagonized by Ketanserin, a peripheral 5-HT2 receptor antagonist. Such treatment did not affect the vagally or splanchnically induced pyloric motor responses, whereas the blood pressure reaction on

[Anatomical basis of autonomic nerve-preserving radical resection for rectal cancer].

OBJECTIVE: To clarify anatomical basis of autonomic nerve-preserving radical resection for rectal cancer. METHOD: Of 10 cadavers, 4 were male and 2 female. Four had hemisected pelvis in the mid-sagittal plane without damaging the retrorectal anatomy. All stages of each dissection were recorded photographically. RESULTS: Hypogastric nerves were identified. The superior hypogastric plexus is the direct extension of the aortic plexus below the aortic bifurcation. It lies immediately behind the peritoneum and descends over the anterior surface of the 5th lumbar vertebra in the retroperitoneal ti

Pyloric motor response to sympathetic nerve stimulation in dogs.

Through this study we evaluated the effect of electrical stimulation of the greater splanchnic nerve on gastroduodenal motility in anesthetized dogs. The majority of stimulations (at a frequency of 10 Hz for 5 msec at a strength of 10V for a train of 10 sec) produced contractions in the gastric antrum and pylorus and relaxation in the duodenum. The antral, pyloric, and duodenal motor responses were unaffected by cervical vagosympathectomy, thoracic vagotomy, and adrenalectomy. Administration of phentolamine, propranolol, or hexamethonium and pretreatment with reserpine failed to affect the con

Comparing two anti-inflammatory reflexes: Splanchnic and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal.

Both the autonomic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis respond to systemic immune challenge by initiating anti-inflammatory reflexes. Here we compare those two homeostatic responses in vivo. We first confirmed in male urethane-anaesthetized rats that disabling the autonomic reflex by bilateral section of the splanchnic sympathetic nerves increased plasma tumor necrosis factor α (TNF) responses to systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 60 µg/kg i.v.) while reducing levels of the key anti-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin 10 (IL-10). Bilateral adrenalectomy, removing both adre

The effects of lithium chloride on the activity of the afferent nerve fibers from the abdominal visceral organs in the rat.

The effect of lithium chloride on the activity of the afferent nerve fibers from the abdominal organs was studied in anesthetized rats. The administration of the lithium chloride solution (0.15 M) over the mesentery increased afferent discharge rate of the splanchnic and vagal gastric nerve. Injection of the same solution into the portal vein caused an increase in afferent activity of the vagal hepatic nerve. Further, infusion of the same solution into the duodenum resulted in facilitation of the afferent activity of the splanchnic as well as vagal celiac nerves. The results may explain the me

[What surgical indications remain in the treatment of pain?].

26 out of 39 pain treatment centres answered a questionnaire about surgical management of chronic pain. 12,715 patients have been seen during 1992, suffering mainly from lumbosciatalgia, peripheral nervous system lesions (20% of iatrogenic origins) or cancer pain. 1,635 underwent a surgical procedure on: lumbar chain (520), Vth cranial nerve (448), spinal cord (225 electrical stimulations), splanchnic nerves (171). Ablative surgery on somatic nerves retains only minor indications, in contrast to an increase in the frequency of stimulation techniques.

CHANGES IN THE PERCENTAGE OF CALCIUM AND PHOSPHORUS OF THE BLOOD FOLLOWING SECTION OF THE SYMPATHETIC AND VAGUS NERVES.

When a splanchnic nerve or the celiac plexus was severed a definite fall in serum calcium resulted, the level falling to 6 mg. per cent and remaining low for 1 or 2 weeks. Tetany, however, did not develop. The inorganic phosphate was slightly altered. On the other hand, when the vagi nerves were severed, the serum calcium rose. The equilibrium of both calcium and phosphorus was rendered less stable by the division of the sympathetic or the parasympathetic nerves.

Novel Concepts on the Functional Neuroanatomy of the Anorectum: Implications for Anorectal Neuropathy and Neuromodulation Therapy.

Anorectal neuropathy causes anorectal dysfunction, yet it is poorly recognized. This stems from both a lack of understanding of the extrinsic and intrinsic innervation of the anorectum and tools for evaluation of neuronal function. Our objective was to provide an improved understanding of the neuronal networks of the anorectum and discuss its functional significance. We performed a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the published literature on anorectal neuroanatomy to generate our findings. Anorectal nerve innervation appears to be much more complex than hitherto known with an extensive o

Gastric and pyloric motor response to sympathetic nerve stimulation after chemical sympathectomy.

This study evaluated the effect of electrical stimulation of the greater splanchnic nerve on gastric and gastroduodenal motility in 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-pretreated anesthetized dogs. Biopsies from the stomach, pylorus and duodenum were obtained and analyzed by catecholamine fluorescence microscopy. Degeneration of adrenergic terminals in Auerbach's plexus was complete at 1 week. The majority of stimulations in control dogs or dogs treated with 6--OHDA produced contractions in the gastric body, antrum, and pylorus and relaxation of inhibition in the duodenum. The excitatory motor response

Raphe pallidus excites a unique class of sympathetic preganglionic neurons.

The responses of splanchnic sympathetic preganglionic neurons (SPNs) to stimulation in raphe pallidus and in rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) were compared to determine the basis for the excitatory responses evoked in the whole splanchnic preganglionic nerve bundle. Most (88%) of the SPNs with a short-latency (32 ms) excitatory response to RVLM stimulation were unaffected by raphe pallidus stimulation, although 12% were excited at a long latency (123 ms). Each of the SPNs with long-latency (114 ms) excitatory responses to RVLM stimulation was also excited by raphe pallidus stimulation at l

Vagal and splanchnic effects at the level of the ventromedian nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) in the cat.

A systematic study of vagal and splanchnic projections to the VMH area was undertaken in anaesthetized cats by means of macroelectrodes and microelectrodes. Responses elicited by vagal and splanchnic nerve stimulation were recorded from the VMH nucleus and the region situated above it. The fact that they are identical, whatever the nerve stimulated, indicates that the afferences follow a common central pathway. From the response latency and the stimulation parameters, it is assumed that the small vagal and splanchnic fibres (A delta, B and C) are involved. Evoked potentials are generally const

Topography of the pelvic autonomic nervous system and its potential impact on surgical intervention in the pelvis.

Bladder, bowel, and sexual dysfunction caused by iatrogenic lesions of the inferior hypogastric plexus (IHP) are well known and commonly tolerated in pelvic surgery. Because the pelvic autonomic nerves are difficult to define and dissect in surgery, and their importance often ignored, we conducted a gross anatomic study of 90 adult and four fetal hemipelves. Using various non-surgical approaches, the anatomic relations and pathways of the IHP were dissected. The IHP extended from the sacrum to the genital organs at the level of the lower sacral vertebrae. It originated from three different sou

Afferent innervation of the gallbladder in the cat, studied by the horseradish peroxidase method.

Following injection of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into the wall of the gallbladder of cats, HRP-positive cells were found bilaterally in dorsal root ganglia T2-L3 (T2-L2, and T3-L2/L3 also observed in a few cats) and nodose ganglia. In about 33% of animals labelled cells were also distributed in cervical dorsal root ganglia C5-C7. Labelled cells were more frequently localized on the right side than the left. There was no apparent change in numbers of labelled cells in the nodose ganglion (NG) on either side following greater and lesser splanchnicotomy or section of the right phrenic nerve or

Nerve sparing in radical surgery for early-stage cervical cancer: yes we should!

Radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy is considered to be the cornerstone in the treatment of early-stage cervical cancer. Although survival in early-stage cervical cancer is up to 95%, long-term morbidity with regard to bladder, bowel, and sexual function is considerable. Damage to the pelvic autonomic nerves may be the cause of these long-term complications following radical hysterectomy. Some authors have presented surgical techniques to preserve the autonomic nerves (ie, the hypogastric nerves and the splanchnic nerves) without compromising radicality. Safety, efficacy, and the

Autonomic nervous control of fundic secretion of somatostatin and antral secretion of gastrin and somatostatin in pigs.

By selective catheterization of gastric veins, we studied the secretion of gastrin and somatostatin from the antrum and of somatostatin from the gastric fundus-corpus region in anaesthetized pigs with or without acute adrenalectomy. The secretion was studied during electrical stimulation of the vagus nerves and the splanchnic nerves and simultaneous irrigation of gastric lumen with fluids of high, low, and neutral pH. The corpus-fundus somatostatin response to vagal stimulation was biphasic with a short-lasting initial increase followed by a lasting inhibition, which was little influenced by i

The sympathetic nervous system in diabetic neuropathy. A clinical and pathological study.

Tests of autonomic function were performed on 16 subjects with diabetic neuropathy. Abnormal sweating occurred in 10/10 (100 per cent), postural hypotension in 7/16 (44 per cent), an abnormal Valsalva ratio in 7/11 (64 per cent), and denervation hypersensitivity to phenylephrine in 2/8 (25 per cent) of patients tested. A quantitative assessment of baroreceptor function was made. In diabetics, there was a reduced resting heart period, heart period range and mean gain. Quantitative histological studies were performed on the greater splanchnic nerves removed at autopsy from 9 control subjects and

Impact of anesthesia and sex on sympathetic efferent and hemodynamic responses to renal chemo- and mechanosensitive stimuli.

Activation of renal sensory nerves by chemo- and mechanosensitive stimuli produces changes in efferent sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) and arterial blood pressure (ABP). Anesthesia and sex influence autonomic function and cardiovascular hemodynamics, but it is unclear to what extent anesthesia and sex impact SNA and ABP responses to renal sensory stimuli. We measured renal, splanchnic, and lumbar SNA and ABP in male and female Sprague-Dawley rats during contralateral renal infusion of capsaicin and bradykinin or during elevation in renal pelvic pressure. Responses were evaluated with a decere

GCaMP6f-expressing chromaffin cells in murine adrenal slices exhibit dynamic spontaneous calcium responses that do not require nerve input.

Chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla exhibit spontaneous action potentials and intracellular Ca2+ responses that result in catecholamine secretion when dissociated in vitro. However, spontaneous activity in these cells is nearly abolished when splanchnic nerve input is blocked in vivo. To address this discrepancy, we examined spontaneous Ca2+ responses in chromaffin cells in an intermediate preparation, adrenal slices from transgenic mice expressing the genetically-encoded Ca2+ indicator GCaMP6f selectively in these cells. Within this preparation, the three-dimensional structure and extrace
