Splenic abscess is a rare but life-threatening condition whose diagnosis is frequently delayed because of its nonspecific presentation. Development of a splenic abscess following splenic infarction secondary to splenic artery thrombosis is exceptional, particularly when revealing an underlying myeloproliferative neoplasm. An 85-year-old woman presented to the emergency department after three weeks of intermittent confusion without fever, abdominal pain, or gastrointestinal symptoms. While neurological investigations were unrevealing, thoracoabdominal computed tomography unexpectedly demonstrat

Background: Splenic artery embolization (SAE) has emerged as a key adjunct to non-operative management (NOM) in hemodynamically stable patients with blunt splenic trauma, yet variability in its application persists across centers. Objectives: The aim was to evaluate real-life clinical practices, techniques, and outcomes of SAE in blunt splenic trauma across multiple Italian trauma centers. Materials and Methods: This retrospective multicenter study analyzed data from 281 patients undergoing emergency SAE for blunt splenic trauma between January 2019 and December 2021. Demographics, imaging fin

INTRODUCTION: Splenic vein thrombosis results in localized portal hypertension called sinistral portal hypertension, which may also lead to massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Symptomatic sinistral portal hypertension is usually best treated by splenectomy, but interventional radiological techniques are safe and effective alternatives in the management of a massive hemorrhage, particularly in cases that have a high surgical risk.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 23-year-old Greek man with acute massive gastric variceal bleeding caused by splenic vein thrombosis due to a missing von Leide

INTRODUCTION: Gastric variceal bleeding due to splenic vein thrombosis is a life-threatening situation and is often difficult to manage by endoscopy. In the worst cases, an emergency splenectomy may be required to stop variceal bleeding.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 60-year-old Caucasian woman with bleeding gastric varices secondary to splenic vein thrombosis treated by splenic artery embolization. Successful embolization was performed by depositing coils into the splenic artery resulting in cessation of variceal bleeding. After embolization there was no recurrence of bleeding.

Celiac axis stenosis (CAS) is one of the most prevalent splanchnic arterial pathologies. It seldom results in clinically severe ischemic bowel disease because of the rich collateral circulation from the superior mesenteric artery. Knowledge about the collaterals in celiac artery stenosis guides various interventional procedures. Here, we describe a case of a 19-year-old female with American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) grade IV splenic injury found to have CAS. Distal splenic artery embolisation was performed via the collateral pathway through the pancreaticoduodenal arcade.

Two patients with splenic bleeding were treated with transcatheter embolisation and selective coiling of the splenic artery. These were first of all a 78-year-old woman who was on anticoagulants for atrial fibrillation and suffered a laceration of the spleen with extravasation of contrast medium and a falling haemoglobin level. The second patient was a 23-year-old woman who suffered laceration of the spleen as the result of a traffic accident. Embolisation made it possible to avoid surgical treatment and preserve the spleen in both patients. Selective embolisation of the splenic artery is a us

Splenic artery pseudoaneurysms are rare but life-threatening complications of chronic pancreatitis (CP). Their management often requires a tailored approach to address the vascular abnormality while minimizing patient morbidity. We report the case of a 59-year-old Caucasian female patient with a history of chronic alcohol consumption who presented to the Emergency Department at Laiko General Hospital of Athens with complaints of melena and diffuse abdominal pain. An endoscopy revealed a Forrest 2b lesion and a pulsatile bulge at the posterior stomach wall. Due to the pulsatile bulge, the lesio

BACKGROUND: Splenic artery pseudoaneurysm is a rare complication of recurrent pancreatitis usually presenting as an incidental finding on abdominal computed tomography.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 66-year-old north African male with a known history of previous pancreatitis who presented with upper gastrointestinal bleeding along with recurrent epigastric pain for 3 days. Investigations did not reveal any particular pancreatitis etiology. Computed tomography of the abdomen with contrast showed splenic artery pseudoaneurysm along with findings suggestive of acute pancreatitis. U

This case report describes fatal exsanguination due to splenic artery hemorrhage into a pancreatic pseudocyst with cystogastrostomy in a 46-year-old woman. The decedent had a complicated medical history including necrotizing pancreatitis, giant pseudocyst formation after cystogastrostomy procedure, and coiling of a hemorrhagic splenic artery. While hospitalized, she underwent embolization of a ruptured splenic artery pseudoaneurysm. Weeks later, she went into hemorrhagic shock and was ultimately pronounced at the hospital. Doctors suspected an upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleed as the cause of

Splenic embolization is a minimally invasive alternative to splenectomy for the treatment of hypersplenism. This was a retrospective study of 101 patients with hypersplenism caused by cirrhosis who were treated with splenic embolization and for whom 6 months of follow-up data were available. Of these patients, 65 underwent partial splenic artery embolization (PSE), including 23 who underwent repeated PSE (RPSE). The incidence of abdominal pain was significantly higher in the PSE group than in the total splenic artery embolization (TSE) group (P < 0.001), and its duration was also longer in the

UNLABELLED: Introduction. Splenic artery aneurisms (SAA) are the third most common aneurysms, with reported incidences up to 10.4%. There is a higher prevalence in women, and most are incidental findings on imaging studies. Symptomatic or SAA larger than 20 mm and aneurysms in pregnant or in women of childbearing age are indications for surgery, because of the increased risk of rupture. Treatment options include endovascular, laparoscopic, and open surgical approaches. Presentation of Case. A 50-year-old female patient with nonspecific abdominal pain performed a computed tomography scan and an

Splenic arteries arising from superior mesenteric arteries, also known as splenomesenteric trunks, are uncommon entities. Aneurysms in relation to these variant splenic arteries are even rarer. Open surgery, laparoscopic technique, or endovascular management could be chosen. We report a patient with an anomalous splenic arteries aneurysm that was excluded with coil embolization in a minimally invasive endovascular way. A follow-up contrast-enhanced computed tomography angiogram performed 1 year after the procedure showed total exclusion of the aneurysm sac, patency of the superior mesenteric a

An aberrant splenic artery arising from the superior mesenteric artery, also known as the splenomesenteric trunk, is a rare anatomical variant seen in less than 1% of the population and is more common in females. Aneurysms of the splenic artery originating anomalously from the superior mesenteric artery are extremely rare; only 35 cases of aneurysm of an aberrant splenic artery have been described so far in the English medical literature. We report an extremely rare case of aneurysm of aberrant splenic artery in a 28-year-old man in whom the lesion was detected during routine abdominal scannin

Introduction. Splenic artery Pseudoaneurysm, a complication of chronic pancreatitis, presenting as massive hematemesis is a rare presentation. Case Report. We present a case of 38-year-old male admitted with chief complaints of pain in the upper abdomen and massive hematemesis for the last 15 days. On examination there was severe pallor. On investigating the patient, Hb was 4.0 gm/dL, upper GI endoscopy revealed a leiomyoma in fundus of stomach, and EUS Doppler also supported the UGI findings. On further investigation of the patient, CECT of the abdomen revealed a possibility of distal pancrea

BACKGROUND: Large splenic artery aneurysms are rare but comprise 60% of all visceral artery aneurysms. Most are found incidentally and rupture in the nonpregnant patient has an approximate 25 to 36% mortality rate. Historically these have been managed with an open surgical approach for resection.
METHODS: We present the case of a 43-year-old man with a recent episode of bacterial endocarditis with an incidental finding of a large 6-cm splenic artery aneurysm. There was noted to be splenic vein occlusion and multiple splenic infarcts versus abscesses on preoperative imaging. There were concern

Splenic artery aneurysm is a rare disorder (0.7%) that arises mainly as a sequlae to portal hypertension. Other causes of splenic artery aneurysm are atherosclerosis, arterial wall injury due to trauma, pancreatitis, and medial dysplasias of the wall. However, though Caroli's disease is known to cause portal hypertension, the rise of vascular pressure leading to aneurysm is not yet reported (extensive Medlar search failed to reveal any publication). Every effort should be made to diagnose this condition as early as possible because 25% of ruptured splenic aneurysms are fatal. A unique case of
