1. Activity of 5-aminolaevulinate synthetase was measured in the midgut and other tissues of the last larval instar of the southern armyworm (Spodoptera eridania Cramer, formerly Prodenia eridania Cramer). 2. Optimum conditions for measuring the activity were established with respect to all variables involved and considerable differences from those reported for mammalian enzyme preparations were found. 3. Maximum activity (20 nmol/h per mg of protein) occurs 18-24 h after the fifth moult and thereafter decreases to trace amounts as the larvae age and approach pupation. 4. Synthetase activity w

Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) is an important invasive pest that poses a serious threat to global crop production. Both emamectin benzoate (EB) and diamide insecticides are effective insecticides used to protect against S. frugiperda. Here, 16S rRNA sequencing was used to characterize the gut microbiota in S. frugiperda larvae exposed to EB or tetrachlorantraniliprole (TE). Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were found to be the dominant bacterial phyla present in the intestines of S. frugiperda. Following insecticide treatment, larvae were enriched for species involved in the process of inse

Methoxyfenozide (M) is one of the selective insecticides used in integrated pest management (IPM) programs for lepidopteran pests. However, recent studies reported a development of M-resistance, which prompted us to look for alternatives. Here, we investigate the potency of a mixture of M with spinetoram (Sp) on M-resistant insects. In the laboratory, a selection pressure with M has carried out on Spodoptera littoralis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) strains. A dipping technique was used to evaluate the toxicity of a sublethal concentration of M and Sp. on S. littoralis larvae, and the same concentra

A neuronal morphological phenotype can be induced in cultured Spodoptera frugiperda insect cells (Sf21) by supplementing serum-containing media with 20-hydroxyecdysone (20-HE) and/or insulin. In this study, the primary objectives were to determine any role of ion channels in mediating the morphological change in cells treated with 20-HE and insulin, and whether serum was required to observe this effect. Results showed serum-free media also induced growth of processes in Sf21 cells, but at a lower percentage than that found previously in cells bathed in serum-containing media. Veratridine, a so

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is a polyphagous pest that poses significant economic threats to a large scale of high-value crops and exhibits high resistance to synthetic insecticides, potentially impacting nontarget organisms. To mitigate undesirable ecological impacts, novel triazole derivatives were synthesized in an eco-friendly manner to develop highly effective insecticides. Toxicological bioassays revealed insecticidal performance alongside S. frugiperda larvae in their third larval instar. The investigated hybrids revealed LC50 values ranging from 1554 to 2588 mg/L. Spodoptera litura, a highly polyphagous lepidopteran pest, poses a major threat to agricultural productivity due to its remarkable adaptability to diverse environmental conditions. Although heat stress is known to trigger transcriptional reprogramming in insects, the molecular mechanisms underlying thermal stress responses in S. litura remain poorly understood. In the present study, fourth-instar larvae were exposed to acute heat stress (44 °C) and compared with control conditions (27 ± 1 °C) to investigate heat-induced transcriptional alterations affecting physiology and reproduction. The larvicidal and biochemical effects of Ipomoea carnea Jacq. (Convolvulaceae) methanol leaf extract against the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were determined under standard laboratory conditions. The second and fourth instar larvae of S. frugiperda were fed on castor bean leaves (Ricinus communis) treated with different concentrations (1-5%) of I. carnea methanolic leaf extract. The mortality percentage significantly increased in correlation with both concentration and exposure time compared to control. Second instar larva of S. frugiperda was more susceptible

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Glutamate-gated chloride channels (GluCls) are essential inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors in insects and key targets of several insecticides. In Spodoptera frugiperda (FAW), mutually exclusive alternative splicing (MEAS) of exon 3 in SfGluCl produces three splice variants (SfGluCl 3A, SfGluCl 3B and SfGluCl 3C), yet the cis-regulatory elements involved in this splicing event remain unknown. This study aimed to identify candidate cis-regulatory regions associated with exon 3 MEAS and characterize their effects on exon 3 selection in a Sf9 cell-based minigene system.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is an invasive agricultural pest that is a serious threat to agricultural production and global food security. Chemical control is the most effective method for preventing outbreaks of S. frugiperda. However, insecticide resistance often develops as a result of prolonged pesticide use, and the molecular mechanisms involved in insecticide resistance remain unclear. Insect cytochrome P450 monooxygenases play an important role in the detoxification of insecticides and insecticide resistance in Lepidoptera. In our study, the LC50 of a novel insecticide (cy

Fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) has rapidly spread in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and has emerged as a major pest of maize and sorghum in the continent. For effective monitoring and a better understanding of the bioecology and management of this pest, a Community-based Fall Armyworm Monitoring, Forecasting, Early Warning and Management (CBFAMFEW) initiative was implemented in six eastern African countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi). Over 650 Community Focal Persons (CFPs) who received training through the project were involved in data collection on

Transgenic crops producing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins have become a primary tool in pest management. Due to the intensive use of Bt crops, resistance of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, to Cry1F maize has occurred in Puerto Rico, Brazil, and some areas of the southeastern U.S. The sustainability of Bt crops faces a great challenge because the Cry1F-maize resistant S. frugiperda may also infest other Bt crops in multiple cropping ecosystems. Here we examined the survival and plant injury of a S. frugiperda population selected with Cry1F maize on three single-gene and five pyr

Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) play a prominent role in the adaptation of insects to host plant chemical defenses. To investigate the potential role of P450s in adaptation of the lepidopteran pest Spodoptera litura to host plant allelochemicals, an expressed sequence data set derived from 6th instar midgut tissues was first mined. One sequence identified from the S. litura 6th instar midgut EST database was determined by phylogenetic analysis to belong to the CYP6AB P450 subfamily, and named CYP6AB14. Dietary supplementation of S. litura larvae with either xanthotoxin (XAN), coumarin (

The tobacco cutworm Spodoptera litura is a globally distributed polyphagous agricultural pest and common factitious host for mass-producing biological control agents (e.g., predators, parasitoids, entomopathogens), owing to its rapid development, and high reproductive capacity. Efficient large scale rearing of S. litura is also fundamental for developing sterile insect techniques (SIT) application, which require stable, high quality insect colonies to ensure consistent sterilization outcomes and effective field release strategies. However, skewed sex ratios frequently constrain colony performa

Secondary plant substances like flavonoids found in host plant tissues or/and environmental contaminants, like cadmium, can pose a common challenge for polyphagous herbivore pests. Earlier pre-exposure experience, with specific stressor, lasting even through many generations may affect the response to the other stressor. In this study, combined the effect of cadmium and extracts of some common spices (ordered according to total flavonoid content: lovage > mentha > basilium), on Spodoptera exigua larvae from two strains, control, and cadmium (selected with a sublethal concentration of cadmium f

Overuse of synthetic pesticides causes problems for humans and the environment or leads to insect resistance to insecticides, so plant extracts and essential oils have gained popularity as an environmentally acceptable alternative to chemical pesticides. This study investigated the toxicity of Delonix regia leaf and seed extracts, protein patterns, and genetic distance analysis against the 5th instar larvae of cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis Boisaduval. Methanol, petroleum ether, and acetone extracts of leaves and seeds of D. regia were used to coat castor leaves for ingestion by the 5t

Due to their effectiveness at low doses and relative safety for non-target species, plant essential oils (EOs) are considered ideal alternatives to conventional pesticides for pest control. In this study, the chemical composition of Thymus serpyllum (T. serpyllum) EO was construed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and its larvicidal and ovicidal activity against omnivorous pests Spodoptera litura (S. litura) was assessed. The effects of T. serpyllum EO on the activities of antioxidant detoxification enzymes were also measured. GC-MS analysis revealed that the main constituents o

Spodoptera frugiperda is a key pest in Latin America, capable of causing significant economic losses if management is not timely. Estimation of economic thresholds adapted to local conditions and specific varieties is essential to optimizing control and reducing unnecessary use of insecticides. The objective of this study was to estimate the economic threshold of S. frugiperda in short stature maize, Delfín variety, under field conditions in northern Sinaloa, Mexico. We set up seven treatments with different levels of artificial infestation (0-25%), plus a regional control, in a completely ran
