Depressive rumination and cognitive processes associated with depression in breast cancer patients and their spouses.

Depression is common among patients with breast cancer (BC) and their spouses. The diagnosis of BC often results in negative cognitive processes, such as appraisals of harm/loss, intrusive thoughts, and depressive rumination, all of which contribute to the occurrence of depression in both the patient and spouse. The present research is a cross-sectional exploration of the mediating role of depressive rumination in the relationships of intrusive thoughts and appraisal of harm/loss with depression, in a sample of 56 BC patients and their partners. We hypothesized that depressive rumination would

Sexuality of patients with chronic heart failure and their spouses and the need for information regarding sexuality.

BACKGROUND: Psychological and physiological effects of chronic heart failure (CHF) can influence sexuality. Both CHF patients and their partners may experience changes and have questions about sexuality. Despite this, healthcare professionals give little information regarding sexuality. This may be due to the paucity of literature describing patients' concerns and questions about sexuality and CHF. AIMS: The aims of this study were to describe the sexuality of patients and their partners and to describe their needs for information regarding sexuality. METHODS: A prospective, descriptive cros

Generalized versus spouse-specific anger/hostility and men's violence against intimates.

The present study examined the extent to which generalized versus spouse-specific anger/hostility was associated with partner violence in 263 men seeking conjoint marital therapy. Clinic men were classified as nonviolent (NV), moderately violent (MV), and severely violent (SV). A community comparison group of relationship-satisfied, non-violent men (CO) was also included. All clinic men reported higher levels of generalized and spouse-specific anger, spouse-specific aggression/hostility, depressive symptomatology and lower spouse-specific assertiveness than community men. SV men reported highe

The association between spouse-reported Type A behaviour pattern and coronary heart disease.

This paper describes further validation of the Spouse-Report Type A Behaviour Pattern Questionnaire. In a case controlled study of 61 cardiac patients versus 61 community controls, the questionnaire was found to discriminate statistically between a group of patients with proven coronary heart disease and a group of matched healthy controls on the anger/hostility subscale and total Type A score. No relationship between Type A score and coronary heart disease severity was found. Possible explanations for these findings are examined.

Support patterns for spouse-caregivers of cancer patients. The effect of the presence of minor children.

This study examines the support received by spouse-caregivers of cancer patients with minor children. The pattern of help encountered by these caregivers is compared to that of other caregivers, either living alone with the cancer patient or together with their adult children. This comparison leads to an exploration of compensatory support patterns depending on the source of help and the living arrangements. The study is based on a convenience sample of 232 spouse-caregivers of cancer patients in the Midwest. The findings suggest that other family members are willing to provide additional supp

[Participation of spouses of neurotic inpatients on the neurotic's views pertaining to their superiors and place of employment].

In a total of 72 sessions, 40 neurotic patients and their partners in marriage, who were interrogated separately, expressed their views of the superiors and employers of the patients. Statistical analyses showed that there was a great similarity between the comments made by the patients and their spouses. The basic psychodynamic process of identification was considered responsible for this. Six modes of identification with the neurotic partner were described. Also discussed by the author are the value and limits of "objective anamnesis". The need for including the entire family in the program

Hardiness Predicts Post-Traumatic Growth and Well-Being in Severely Wounded Servicemen and Their Spouses.

INTRODUCTION: Thousands of military personnel have suffered severe wounds and traumatic amputations in recent overseas conflicts. They face multiple surgeries and long, painful rehabilitation. Despite the tremendous stress for these servicemen and families, many appear to cope quite well and even thrive despite their devastating wounds. Hardiness is a world view or mindset marked by high levels of commitment and engagement in the world, a strong sense of control, and the tendency to see change as a challenge and opportunity to learn and improve. Previous research has shown that military person

Perceived breathlessness and psychological distress among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and their spouses.

The purpose of this study was to describe the impact of breathlessness on Jordanian patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and their spouses' perception of the patients' breathlessness. A cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational design was used with a sample of 67 Jordanian patients with COPD related breathlessness and their spouses. The Dyspnoea 12 Scale (D-12) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were administered to both patients and spouses. There was a significant positive correlation between total patients' D-12 scores and total HADS scores. Spouses who

Spouses' attempts to regulate day-to-day dietary adherence among patients with type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate daily dietary adherence and diabetes-specific distress among older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) as a function of spouses' diet-related support and diet-related control (persuasion and pressure) and whether these daily processes differ among couples who do and do not appraise responsibility for managing T2DM as shared. METHODS: End-of-day diaries were completed by 126 couples in which one partner had T2DM (patient) and the other did not (spouse). Using electronic diary methods, each partner independently recorded data for 24 consecutive days (patients r

How do carriers of hemophilia and their spouses experience prenatal diagnosis by chorionic villus sampling?

A semistructured personal interview with 29 female carriers of hemophilia and 23 of their spouses was performed at a median of 3 1/2 years after the first chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and gene analysis. Carriers with a hemophilic father or brother, had high sense of coherence (SOC) scores, and thus would be expected to have good ability to handle the stress of prenatal diagnosis (PD). Prenatal diagnosis of hemophilia by CVS was generally well accepted by the women and their spouses. However, the period while waiting for test results was experienced as emotionally troublesome by both the wom

Characteristics of women physically abused by their spouses and who seek treatment regarding marital conflict.

Physically abused women seeking treatment for marital difficulties (abused women, n = 49) were compared with maritally discordant, nonabused women (discordant only, n = 23) and maritally satisfied nonabused women (community control, n = 25). Abused women reported significantly more fear of their spouses and reported that their spouses were significantly more coercive and psychologically aggressive than women in the 2 matched nonabused groups. Abused women did not report higher rates of abuse as a child, nor did they report higher rates of past psychopathology than women in the nonabused groups

Frequent transmission of HTLV-III among spouses of patients with AIDS-related complex and AIDS.

Seven cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and AIDS-related complex (ARC) associated with human T-cell leukemia (lymphotropic) virus (HTLV)-III infection were documented in married males whose family members consented to medical evaluation. Five spouses also had evidence of HTLV-III infection documented by isolation of virus and by detection of serum antibody directed against viral structural proteins. Three of the five HTLV-positive spouses also had clinical evidence of ARC. The remaining four spouses were clinically healthy. Eleven children (between 14 months and 13 years of ag

Loss of a spouse and risk of cognitive decline: insights from six prospective cohort studies.

AIMS: The risk of cognitive decline after losing a spouse remained mixed. This study aims to investigate the association between spousal loss and risk of cognitive decline, assess whether this association varies by sex and age, and identify modifiable factors. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study using harmonized data from six population-based ageing surveys: the US Health and Retirement Study and its sister surveys in England, Mexico, China, India and South Africa, incorporating their respective Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) sub-studies. Spousal loss (yes vs no)
