New dengue virus type 1 genotype in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The number of cases and severity of disease associated with dengue infection in Sri Lanka has been increasing since 1989, when the first epidemic of dengue hemorrhagic fever was recorded. We identified a new dengue virus 1 strain circulating in Sri Lanka that coincided with the 2009 dengue epidemic.

Human dirofilariasis caused by Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens in Sri Lanka.

Human dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens is a common zoonotic infection in Sri Lanka. Todate 70 cases are on record, and they include 3 expatriates from Russia, England and Korea, who were undoubtedly infected in Sri Lanka. Around 30-60% of dogs are infected with D. repens in various parts of the country and the mosquito vectors are Aedes aegypti, Armigeres subalbatus, Mansonia uniformis and M. annulifera. Unlike in other countries of the old world infection is most common in children under the age of 9 years, the youngest being 4 months old and the scrotum, penis and perian

Acute rhinocerebral mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus arrhizus from Sri Lanka.

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is a rare fungus infection reported mainly from the United States of America and Europe. The disease is caused by zygomycete fungi, most often by a Rhizopus species. Diagnosis is often made post-mortem and in many instances culture identification of the fungus responsible has not been performed. A case of culturally proven rhinocerebral mucormycosis is described for the first time in Sri Lanka. The patient was a 56-year-old male who had been treated for diabetes mellitus for 17 years. He had typical symptoms of numbness and loss of sensations over the temporal region

Serological examinations of dogs (Canis familiaris) in Colombo/Sri Lanka.

In Colombo/Sri Lanka wild dogs were investigated for various zoonoses. Based on the poor general conditions the contamination rate was relatively high. 27 of the 30 dog sera reacted positive against Listeriosis. 17 of the 29 samples reacted against Q-fever in low titers, however, because of the highly purified antigen used these are evaluated as positive. The contamination rate was 100%. 18 sera reacted positive against the RMSF-group antigen. 14 samples reacted positive against Chlamydiasis. 17 samples reacted positive against Echinococcosis and in the Brucellosis samples 3 were positive. 7 p

Seroepidemiological survey of hospital-associated populations in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Almost 1,500 sera from hospital-associated groups in Colombo, Sri Lanka were tested for antibodies against melioidosis, scrub typhus, influenza, and group B arboviruses. A low prevalence of antibodies was found against meliodosis and scrub typhus. Crude prevalence rates of more than 50% were encountered for antibodies against A influenza, and there was no apparent difference in rates when these were analysed according to age, sex, or ethnic background. Influenza B antibodies were more prevalent in older individuals. Antibodies against group B arboviruses were found in all groups tested, and we

Chikungunya masquerading as dengue infection in Sri Lanka uncovered by metagenomics.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is a significant threat to human health in South and Southeast Asia where patients are treated without diagnostic confirmation during outbreaks. This approach, though cost-effective may miss important infections especially those caused by other arboviruses (e.g., Zika, Chikungunya and West Nile virus). This study aimed to diagnose missed infections mimicking dengue by using metagenomic next generation sequencing (mNGS). METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Total nucleic acid (DNA and RNA) was extracted and subjected to mNGS from acute infection plasma of 60 patients from a pro

Detection of dengue virus encephalitis in central part of Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: In tropical Asia, arbovirus-induced encephalitis continues to be a serious public health issue. Encephalitis is caused by wide range of neurotropic pathogens, and flaviviruses are one of the main causative agents in the area. Sri Lanka reports a considerable number of central nervous system infections annually. Both dengue and Japanese encephalitis are endemic, and cases of Zika and West Nile virus infections were reported occasionally in Sri Lanka. Although reported number of Japanese encephalitis cases has reduced in the past, aetiological diagnosis in majority of encephalitis ca

Genomic Surveillance and Evolutionary Dynamics of Influenza A Virus in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Influenza A has been named as a priority pathogen by the WHO due to the potential to cause pandemics. Genomic sequencing of influenza strains is important to understand the evolution of the influenza strains and also to select the appropriate influenza vaccines to be used in the different influenza seasons in Sri Lanka. Therefore, we sought to understand the molecular epidemiology of the influenza viruses in the Western Province of Sri Lanka, including mutational analysis to investigate the evolutionary dynamics. METHODS: A total of 349 individuals presenting with fever and respir

Analysis and forecast of dengue incidence in urban Colombo, Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the dynamical behavior of dengue transmission is essential in designing control strategies. Mathematical models have become an important tool in describing the dynamics of a vector borne disease. Classical compartmental models are well-known method used to identify the dynamical behavior of spread of a vector borne disease. Due to use of fixed model parameters, the results of classical compartmental models do not match realistic nature. The aim of this study is to introduce time in varying model parameters, modify the classical compartmental model by improving its pre
