Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus corneal ulcers.

Three patients with corneal ulcers had gram-positive cocci isolated on initial scrapings. There was no response to topical fortified aminoglycosides or cephalosporins. Cultures revealed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus that was sensitive only to topical vancomycin eye drops. Because the microbiologic spectrum is similar, vancomycin should be considered instead of a cephalosporin in the treatment of corneal ulcers to cover methicillin-resistant S. aureus and S. epidermidis.

Experimental Staphylococcus aureus arthritis in mice.

Staphylococcus aureus arthritis is usually caused by bacteremia and is highly destructive. Controlled studies on septic arthritis in humans are difficult to perform, because the time of onset of the infection is unknown. Animal models of bacterial arthritis make it possible to control important variables in experimental studies. We present a mouse model of S. aureus arthritis in which the intravenous administration of 10(7) cells of S. aureus LS-1 induced arthritis or osteitis or both within 3 weeks in 80 to 90% of the mice. Signs of arthritis emerged within the first few days after the inject

Complications associated with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia.

Thirty-nine consecutive Staphylococcus aureus bacteremias were reviewed with particular attention to complications. Thirty-four (87%) of the bacteremias were nosocomial, with intravascular catheters (20 episodes) and dialysis-access sites (six episodes) the most common sources. Complications developed in 36% (14/39) of all bacteremias and in 30% (6/20) of those that were catheter-associated. Acute complications (shock, adult respiratory distress syndrome, disseminated intravascular coagulation) occurred in six patients and were fatal in four. In nine patients metastatic suppurative complicatio

The evaluation of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis in hospital air, their antibiotic resistance and sensitivity of S. aureus to cefoxitin.

Staphylococci as a nosocomial infection agent, increases the possibility of contracting diseases such as wound infection, sepsis and skin infections in humans. It was shown that Staphylococcus aureus considered as a commensal organism causing various both endemic and epidemic hospital-acquired infections. Air samples were collected from Sina Hospital, Hamadan city, which dedicated to various respiratory diseases and analysed by biochemical tests. The resistance and sensitivity of bacterial strains to the cefoxitin antibiotic were also determined. Staphylococcus aureus density (CFU/m3) were mea

Prevalence and Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus on Public Recreational Beaches in Northeast Ohio.

Staphylococcus aureus can cause severe life-threatening illnesses such as sepsis and endocarditis. Although S. aureus has been isolated from marine water and intertidal beach sand, only a few studies have been conducted to assess prevalence of S. aureus at freshwater recreational beaches. As such, we aimed to determine prevalence and molecular characteristics of S. aureus in water and sand at 10 freshwater recreational beaches in Northeast Ohio, USA. Samples were analyzed using standard microbiology methods, and resulting isolates were typed by spa typing and multilocus sequence typing. The ov

In terms of life- menaced contagion, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is known to be one of which and it is truly notable in the contaminated food causing a community health anxiety. However, the occurrence of S. aureus and MRSA in diverse kinds of dairy products have been tested in this study. Samples from: raw milk (unpasteurized) from horse, goat, camel, and cow origins and unpacked cheese were checked for the recovered strains of such bacterium and MRSA. Wholly, MRSA isolates were verified for antimicrobial susceptibility and further characterized by mecA and staphylococc

Nasal Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Screening in Orthopaedic Patients: We Should Not Ignore Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus Aureus.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a common cause of surgical site infections in orthopaedic patients. It is routine practice to screen patients for methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). However, little to no attention is usually paid to the presence of methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) in screened patients. The purpose of this study was to document the prevalence of MSSA and MRSA in orthopaedic patients undergoing nasal screening and identify risk factors for colonization by both types of bacteria and associated surgical site infection. METHODS: Prospectively collected d

Does every Staphylococcus aureus infection require anti-MRSA drugs? Three case reports of a Staphylococcus aureus infection.

Staphylococcus aureus is a common clinical pathogen. Does every S. aureus infection require anti-MRSA drugs? Reported here are three cases of a community-acquired infection with S. aureus. The first case involveds a 45-year-old male who was admitted due to right ankle pain for 1 month; he was diagnosed with chronic suppurative osteomyelitis and an acute soft tissue infection of the ankle. S.aureus was cultured from the pus and was resistant to penicillin and sensitive to oxacillin and vancomycin. After receiving oxacillin, he was cured and discharged 45 days after admission. The second case in

Synergistic antimicrobial effects of photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy and gentamicin on Staphylococcus aureus and multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is generally increasing, which has become a great challenge for treating infectious diseases caused by microbes. Photodynamic antibacterial chemotherapy (PACT) has been considered as a promising method for inactivating bacteria. The combination of antimicrobial agent with PACT may provide efficient way against drug-resistant microbe. This study aims to investigate the synergistic effects of PACT mediated by toluidine blue (TB), combined with gentamicin (GEN) on common pathogens Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and multidrug-resistant S. aureus (

Management of Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Staphylococcus aureus, a gram-positive bacterium, is the leading cause of death from bacteremia worldwide, with a case fatality rate of 15% to 30% and an estimated 300 000 deaths per year. OBSERVATIONS: Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia causes metastatic infection in more than one-third of cases, including endocarditis (≈12%), septic arthritis (7%), vertebral osteomyelitis (≈4%), spinal epidural abscess, psoas abscess, splenic abscess, septic pulmonary emboli, and seeding of implantable medical devices. Patients with S aureus bacteremia commonly present with fever or symptoms from

Immunomodulation and Disease Tolerance to Staphylococcus aureus.

The Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most frequent pathogens that causes severe morbidity and mortality throughout the world. S. aureus can infect skin and soft tissues or become invasive leading to diseases such as pneumonia, endocarditis, sepsis or toxic shock syndrome. In contrast, S. aureus is also a common commensal microbe and is often part of the human nasal microbiome without causing any apparent disease. In this review, we explore the immunomodulation and disease tolerance mechanisms that promote commensalism to S. aureus.

Predictors of mortality in Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia.

Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) is an important infection with an incidence rate ranging from 20 to 50 cases/100,000 population per year. Between 10% and 30% of these patients will die from SAB. Comparatively, this accounts for a greater number of deaths than for AIDS, tuberculosis, and viral hepatitis combined. Multiple factors influence outcomes for SAB patients. The most consistent predictor of mortality is age, with older patients being twice as likely to die. Except for the presence of comorbidities, the impacts of other host factors, including gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic stat
