[Purulent pericarditis in a patient with diabetes mellitus treated by percutaneous pericardiocentesis].

Purulent pericarditis seldom occurs in Western countries, yet its mortality rate remains high between 20 and 35 % despite early treatment. We report the case of a 43-year-old patient admitted in the intensive cardiologic care unit with a pre-tamponade, requiring an immediate percutaneous pericardiocentesis allowing the drainage of a purulent effusion. Evolution with antibiotic therapy adapted according to the bacteriological findings was favorable and 3-months follow-up shows a near complete regression of the effusion. This case recalls us this rare diagnosis entity and illustrates the possibi

Vanishing Bronchus Syndrome After Lung Transplantation: Clinical Characteristics, Airway Colonization, and Stent Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Airway complications remain a significant cause of morbidity after lung transplantation. Among them, vanishing bronchus syndrome (VBS) represents a severe form of airway injury characterized by progressive distal bronchial stenosis. Although ischemia has been implicated in its pathogenesis, the role of airway colonization with multidrug-resistant organisms remains incompletely understood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, single-center study of lung transplant recipients who developed VBS between January 2001 and November 2025. Clinical characteristics, bronchos

Multidrug- and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius as a cause of canine pyoderma: a case report.

A case of a dog with a long-term inflammatory skin disorder due to infection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) is described. After initial diagnostics of MRSP, follow-up swabs of the dog (nose, skin) were taken twice after four and seven weeks. MRSP was constantly isolated from the skin and once from the nose. Since infected humans might be a source of reinfection, the owners of the dog were screened (nasal) three times during their pet's therapy. Thereby, the male owner was found to be colonized with MRSP once in the first sampling round. Comparative typing of

Prevalence of the Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Coagulase-Positive-and Negative-Staphylococcus in Chicken Meat Retailed to Consumers.

The use of antibiotics in farm management (growing crops and raising animals) has become a major area of concern. Its implications is the consequent emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and accordingly their access into the human food chain with passage of antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) to the normal human intestinal microbiota and hence to other pathogenic bacteria causative human disease. Therefore, we pursued in this study to unravel the frequency and the quinolone resistance determining region, mecA and cfr genes of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), methi

Effects of Diluents, Saliva and Other Organics on the Microbicidal Activity of Cetylpyridinium Chloride and Povidone-iodine.

Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) is used for infection control and preoperative sterilization of the oral and pharyngeal regions. Marketed preparations containing cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) are used to inhibit growth of oral bacteria. We conducted an in vitro study of the sterilizing effects of these microbicides on 10 oral bacterial strains and fungi related to pneumonia and periodontal disease, after dilution with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), saliva, and components in saliva. The CPC solution was evaluated at 50 mg/100 mL, which is the concentration used in products. CPC sterilized all strain

AEROBIC MICROFLORA AND ENDOPARASITES OF FRESHLY SHOT WILD AGOUTI (DASYPROCTA LEPORINA) IN TRINIDAD, WEST INDIES.

The agouti ( Dasyprocta leporina ) is a New World wild rodent hunted for its meat in Trinidad and other Latin American countries. Studies on agouti under captive conditions have yielded some data on health-related aspects, but relatively very little is known about their wild counterparts. The environment of the agouti can influence the microflora and parasites harbored by the animals, which may contain zoonotic pathogens. Here, the microflora found on the nasal mucosa and sections of the intestinal tract and endoparasites of freshly shot agouti from various areas of Trinidad are described. Sta

A prospective study of the clinical findings, treatment and histopathology of 44 cases of pyotraumatic dermatitis.

Pyotraumatic dermatitis (hot spot) is a common clinical syndrome in dogs but there are few prospective scientific studies related to it. The aim of this study was to investigate correlations among clinical pyotraumatic dermatitis, histopathology of the lesions and possible predisposing causes. The relationship of these with breed, age, sex and location of lesion was assessed statistically. A clinical diagnosis of acute pyotraumatic dermatitis was made in 44 privately owned dogs. Males exceeded females (P = 0.0348) and lesions were more common in dogs aged 4 years or less (P < 0.0001). Lesions

Long-term study of aerobic bacteria of the genital tract in breeding bitches.

The aerobic bacterial flora of the genital tract was characterized in 59 bitches in an 18-month study. The bitches represented 4 breeds and were from 3 kennels. Collection of vaginal swab specimens for bacterial culturing was performed every month, except during estrus when specimens were collected every week (n = 826). The capsule of the swab containing transport media was broken before specimen collection to moisten the tip, which helped to reduce the number of negative cultures. All bitches helped at least once during the study and, thus, had known reproductive functions. Pregnancy rates, l

Retrospective analysis of antimicrobial resistance in bacterial pathogens from pet rabbits in Hong Kong, 2019-2022.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat to human and animal health. Data are limited on the prevalence of resistant bacteria in pet rabbits. Therefore, we aimed to identify prevalent bacterial infections and AMR profiles among pet rabbits in Hong Kong (HK). Our search of the CityU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) database found 301 cases of pet rabbits submitted for bacteriologic and antimicrobial susceptibility testing by veterinarians at 20 exotic veterinary clinics across HK between 2019 and 2022. The rabbits were of 8 different breeds and had a median age of 6.5 y, with 54

[New insight into bacterial zoonotic pathogens posing health hazards to humans].

This article presents the problem of evolutionary changes of zoonotic pathogens responsible for human diseases. Everyone is exposed to the risk of zoonotic infection, particularly employees having direct contact with animals, i.e. veterinarians, breeders, butchers and workers of animal products' processing industry. The article focuses on pathogens monitored by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which has been collecting statistical data on zoonoses from all European Union countries for 19 years and publishing collected data in annual epidemiological reports. Staphylococcus pseudintermedius exfoliative toxin EXI selectively digests canine desmoglein 1 and causes subcorneal clefts in canine epidermis.

Staphylococcal exfoliative toxins are known to digest desmoglein (Dsg) 1, a desmosomal cell-cell adhesion molecule, thus causing intraepidermal splitting in human bullous impetigo, staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome and swine exudative epidermitis. Recently, a novel exfoliative toxin gene (exi), whose sequence shares significant homology with previously identified exfoliative toxins, was isolated from Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. Little is known about the pathogenic involvement of this toxin in canine pustular diseases such as impetigo. The aim of this study was to determine whether EXI,

The bacteriology of obstructive pneumonitis. A prospective study using ultrasound-guided transthoracic needle aspiration.

Obstructive pneumonitis, the opacity that develops distal to an obstructing endobronchial lesion or external compression, is actually a combination of atelectasis, bronchiectasis with mucus plugging, and true parenchymal inflammation. In the majority of cases, it is usually not possible to determine whether infection is present or not from the radiographic findings alone. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bacteriology of obstructive pneumonitis and the influence of this result on the treatment of patients. From March 1992 to February 1993, 26 consecutive patients (20 men and six women)

Development and implementation of a multidrug-resistant organism surveillance program in a veterinary teaching hospital to support infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship.

OBJECTIVE: Antimicrobial resistance poses a continued threat in veterinary medicine, with multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) increasingly identified in companion animals complicating clinical management, elevating treatment costs, and presenting public health risks. To address the concern of MDROs in hospitalized companion animals, we describe the structure, implementation, and outcomes of a surveillance system in our veterinary teaching hospital. METHODS: Culture submissions from 2023 and 2024 were reviewed along with our surveillance response and activities at a Veterinary Medical Center
