Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of staphylococci isolated from saliva of clinically normal cats.

Samples were collected from 150 adult cats, processed for isolation of Staphylococcus species and tested for susceptibility to penicillin G, gentamicin, oxacillin, enrofloxin and tetracycline. Methicillin resistance was also determined. One hundred and four isolates were obtained (69.3% of samples). Coagulase-negative species were most common, and the most frequently isolated (33 samples) species was Staph. felis. Other coagulase-negative species, such as Staph. haemolyticus, Staph. simulans, Staph. epidermidis and Staph. saprophyticus were also isolated. Coagulase-positive staphylococci were

Absence of factors associated with significant urinary tract infections caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci, excluding Staphylococcus saprophyticus, have recently been implicated as pathogens in urinary tract infections, especially in catheterized patients. In order to evaluate any laboratory markers for significant isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci, we prospectively studied 72 patients with significant, indeterminant, or contaminant urine isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci. Patients in the three categories did not differ by age, sex, presence of a urinary catheter, or other instrumentation or likelihood of nosocomial acquisition. The isolates fr

Antimicrobial agents based on metal-ion zeolite materials: a multivariate approach to microbial growth inhibition.

Bacteria are susceptible to zeolites doped with metal ions. Although the complete mode of action remains unclear, it is widely accepted that metal ions kill bacteria by inducing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are detrimental to microbial life processes. In this study, two zeolite structures, MFI and LTA, were selected as hosts for the preparation of various metal-ion zeolite materials, which were then tested for their antimicrobial activity against eight different bacterial strains-Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus saprophyti

Detection of mecA Genes in Hospital-Acquired MRSA and SOSA Strains Associated with Biofilm Formation.

Methicillin-resistant (MR) Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and others, except for Staphylococcus aureus (SOSA), are common in healthcare-associated infections. SOSA encompass largely coagulase-negative staphylococci, including coagulase-positive staphylococcal species. Biofilm formation is encoded by the icaADBC operon and is involved in virulence. mecA encodes an additional penicillin-binding protein (PBP), PBP2a, that avoids the arrival of β-lactams at the target, found in the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec). This work aims to detect mecA, the bap gene, the icaADBC operon, and typ

Predominant staphylococci in the intensive care unit of a paediatric hospital.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci cause a significant number of infections, especially in immunocompromised patients, including premature neonates. Nosocomial strains present in the environment create a special risk.We studied staphylococci isolated from the intensive care unit of a paediatric teaching hospital over the period of six months in 1997. Biotyping and species identification were performed; resistance to methicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics and patterns of resistance to antimicrobial agents were determined. Staphylococcus cohnii was the predominant species of 147 isolates of

The Interpretation of Dissolved Oxygen on Flavor Characteristics and Microorganism Community Succession between Soy Sauce Fermented in Tank and Soy Sauce Fermented in Pond.

Traditional soy sauce fermentation modernization is crucial, yet soy sauce fermented in a tank (SSFT) exhibits a flavor difference compared to superior soy sauce fermented in a pond (SSFP). Dissolved oxygen (DO) was hypothesized as a key regulator of microbial dynamics and flavor variation. This study employed genomic and metabolomic analyses to investigate DO's role in synthetic microbial communities, aiming to clarify how DO drives flavor difference between SSFP and SSFT. Results showed that higher DO levels drive: (i) sensory shift favoring umami/kokumi over bitterness, (ii) metabolic repro

Microbial richness and air chemistry in aerosols above the PBL confirm 2,000-km long-distance transport of potential human pathogens.

The existence of viable human pathogens in bioaerosols which can cause infection or affect human health has been the subject of little research. In this study, data provided by 10 tropospheric aircraft surveys over Japan in 2014 confirm the existence of a vast diversity of microbial species up to 3,000 m height, which can be dispersed above the planetary boundary layer over distances of up to 2,000 km, thanks to strong winds from an area covered with massive cereal croplands in Northeast (NE) Asia. Microbes attached to aerosols reveal the presence of diverse bacterial and fungal taxa, includin

Direct Identification of Pathogens in Urine by Use of a Specific Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Spectrum Database.

Urinary tract infections are among the most common reasons for antimicrobial treatment, and early diagnosis could have a significant impact by enabling rapid administration of the adapted antibiotic and preventing complications. The current delay between sample receipt and pathogen identification is about 24 to 48 h, which could be significantly shortened by use of an accurate direct method. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is already used for the identification of pathogens in clinical laboratories and constitutes a promising tool for

Presence of superantigen genes and antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus isolates obtained from the uteri of dairy cows with clinical endometritis.

Clinical endometritis is an important disease of dairy cattle and results in decreased reproductive performance. This disease is caused by contamination of the uterus with a broad spectrum of microorganisms after calving. In this study, staphylococcal isolates from the uterus of dairy cows with clinical endometritis were tested for their distribution of superantigen (SAg) genes and antimicrobial resistance. Between the 127 staphylococcal isolates collected in this study, 10 species were identified. The predominant strain identified was Staphylococcus aureus (n=53), followed by Staphylococcus s

Clinical aspects of antimicrobial prophylaxis for invasive urological procedures.

The essential value of antimicrobial prophylaxis is to defend the patient undergoing invasive diagnostic procedures or surgery against infectious complications by reducing the bacterial load. Escherichia coli remains the predominant uropathogen (70-80%) isolated in acute community-acquired uncomplicated infections, followed by Staphylococcus saprophyticus (10 to 15%). Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Proteus species, and enterococci infrequently cause uncomplicated cystitis and pyelonephritis. The pathogens traditionally associated with UTI are altering many of their features, particularly because of

[Epidemiology and etiology of urinary tract infections in the community. Antimicrobial susceptibility of the main pathogens and clinical significance of resistance].

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are a frequent problem in primary care. They occur mainly in women without underlying diseases and with no functional or structural anomalies of the urinary tract; consequently most cases are considered uncomplicated UTI. Etiology is influenced by factors such as age, diabetes, spinal cord injury, urinary catheterization, and other factors. Escherichia coli causes 80-85% of acute episodes of uncomplicated cystitis. Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Proteus mirabilis, Streptococcus agalactiae and Klebsiella spp. are responsible for most of the remaining episodes. The

Identification of bacteria on Thai banknotes and coins using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and their phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility profiles.

BACKGROUND: The existence and transmission of pathogenic and antibiotic-resistant bacteria through currency banknotes and coins poses a global public health risk. Banknotes and coins are handled by people in everyday life and have been identified as a universal medium for potentially microbial contamination. METHODS: To ascertain existence of medically important bacteria, a total of 300 samples including 150 banknotes and 150 coins were randomly collected at onsite retail fresh meat stores, i.e., pork and chicken, fish, and seafood stores, from nineteen fresh markets distributed across Bangko

Multifunctional Properties of the Gut Symbiont Enterococcus gallinarum Associated With Eudocima materna Caterpillars in Host Plant Detoxification.

Gut symbiotic bacteria are highly dynamic and contribute to digestion, development, immunity, detoxification, and environmental adaptation in insect hosts. In fruit-sucking moths (FSM), particularly Eudocima materna (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), adults are destructive frugivorous pests, whereas larvae feed exclusively on toxic plants such as Tinospora cordifolia. This study investigates the gut bacterial diversity of FSM larvae, with an emphasis on their role in host plant adaptation. Nine bacterial strains were isolated, including Enterobacter hormaechei, Klebsiella aerogenes, Mammaliicoccus sciu

The autolysin Ami contributes to the adhesion of Listeria monocytogenes to eukaryotic cells via its cell wall anchor.

Adherence of pathogenic microorganisms to the cell surface is a key event during infection. We have previously reported the characterization of Listeria monocytogenes transposon mutants defective in adhesion to eukaryotic cells. One of these mutants had lost the ability to produce Ami, a 102 kDa autolytic amidase with an N-terminal catalytic domain and a C-terminal cell wall-anchoring domain made up of repeated modules containing the dipeptide GW ('GW modules'). We generated ami null mutations by plasmid insertion into L. monocytogenes strains lacking the invasion proteins InlA (EGDDeltainlA),
