Demographic compensation maintains shrub population growth in a grazed desert steppe.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Grazing is a pervasive disturbance in dryland grasslands, yet its effects on shrub populations remain difficult to predict because it can influence different demographic processes in various ways. Understanding whether shrub populations decline or persist under grazing requires demographic approaches that integrate vital rates across the full life cycle in temporally varying environments. METHODS: We monitored populations of Caragana microphylla, a long-lived leguminous shrub widely distributed across the dryland grasslands of northern China, from 2022 to 2024 in both gra

[Study of the protective effects of phenothiazine derivatives on a stochastic model of brain compression edema-swelling].

Search for pathogenically substantiated drugs to treat and prevent brain edema-swelling (BES) is a topical problem of modern biology and medicine. It is possible to solve this challenging biomedical problem by using a method for devising a stochastic model of the tested process. The developed stochastic model of BES identifies the nerve tissue structural components involving in the anti-edematous mechanism of action of phenothiazine derivatives under the conditions of 7-day brain compression. Analyzing the results of this model application revealed the major governing structures in the morphof

Stochastic formulation of patient positioning using linac-mounted cone beam imaging with prior knowledge.

PURPOSE: In this work, a novel stochastic framework for patient positioning based on linac-mounted CB projections is introduced. Based on this formulation, the most probable shifts and rotations of the patient are estimated, incorporating interfractional deformations of patient anatomy and other uncertainties associated with patient setup. METHODS: The target position is assumed to be defined by and is stochastically determined from positions of various features such as anatomical landmarks or markers in CB projections, i.e., radiographs acquired with a CB-CT system. The patient positioning p

Democracy under uncertainty: the wisdom of crowds and the free-rider problem in group decision making.

We introduce a game theory model of individual decisions to cooperate by contributing personal resources to group decisions versus by free riding on the contributions of other members. In contrast to most public-goods games that assume group returns are linear in individual contributions, the present model assumes decreasing marginal group production as a function of aggregate individual contributions. This diminishing marginal returns assumption is more realistic and generates starkly different predictions compared to the linear model. One important implication is that, under most conditions,

Ecological assembly of mucosal and fecal microbiomes in ulcerative colitis across genes, functions, and species.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with gut microbial dysbiosis, yet the ecological processes underlying community assembly remain unclear. METHODS: Here, we applied Sloan's neutral community model to examine the relative contributions of stochastic and deterministic processes across multiple ecological layers, including metagenomic genes (MGs), molecular functions (MFs), and microbial species (archaea, bacteria, fungi, and viruses), in fecal and mucosal microbiota from healthy controls and ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. RESULTS: Across all layers, most MGs, MFs,

Stochastic delay derivatives of Newcastle disease application in epidemic model: Stability analysis and approximation.

The illicit trade in wildlife for pet purposes poses a direct risk to animal populations through overharvesting, but it also serves as an indirect conduit for the spread of contagious diseases. The present study assessed the effects of the hypothetical release of captured, infected individuals of Newcastle disease into the natural population of the white-winged parakeet, the most trafficked psittacine species in Peru. This study analysed the computational dynamical analysis of the stochastic susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered model of Newcastle disease. We take two approaches to stochastic

Optimization the stochastic optimal reactive power dispatch with renewable energy resources using a modified dandelion algorithm.

Improvement performance of transmission systems is crucial task that can be boosted via optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD). However, the continuous variations of load demand and the power produced by the renewable energy sources (RERs) increases the complicities of solving the stochastic optimal reactive power dispatch (SORPD) solution. In this regard, a modified Dandelion Optimizer (MDO) algorithm is introduced to optimize the SORPD solution with taking into consideration the stochastic fluctuations or the random variations of the load demand and the power produced by RERs. The suggested

Stochastic HIV-1 infection model with time delay: case study of clinical data.

This paper proposes an immunosuppressive infection model with time delay and stochastic perturbation. A stochastic threshold R0s is constructed, and the sufficient conditions for virus extinction and weak persistence are given. Subsequently, we respectively fit the SDDE and ODE models to the real data, and conduct a sensitivity analysis of the equilibrium. The greater the noise intensity, the more obvious the oscillation amplitude of the solution curve around the immune-free equilibrium, the larger noise intensity can cause the originally persistent virus in ODE to go extinct in the SDDE model

A filtering approach for statistical inference in a stochastic SIR model with an application to Covid-19 data.

In this paper, we consider a discrete-time stochastic SIR model, where the transmission rate and the number of infectious individuals are random and unobservable. This model accounts for random fluctuations in infectiousness and for non-detected infections. Thus, statistical inference has to be performed in a partial information setting. We adopt a Bayesian approach and use nested particle filtering to estimate the state of the system and the parameters. Moreover, we discuss forecasts and model tests based on the posterior predictive distribution. As a case study, we apply our methodology to A

Stochastic analysis of Mpox epidemiology with vaccination strategies and environmental persistence.

In the context of global preparedness and response strategies for Mpox outbreaks, we develop a comprehensive mathematical model to investigate its transmission dynamics, integrating critical factors such as vaccination coverage and environmental contamination. The model is analytically examined to ensure well-posedness, including the positivity of solutions and the existence of a biologically invariant region. Stability analysis reveals that the disease-free equilibrium is both locally and globally stable when the basic reproduction number [Formula: see text], while a unique endemic equilibriu

Warming, stochastic diel thermal fluctuations affect physiological performance and gill plasticity in an amphibious mangrove fish.

Natural temperature variation in many marine ecosystems is stochastic and unpredictable, and climate change models indicate that this thermal irregularity is likely to increase. Temperature acclimation may be more challenging when conditions are highly variable and stochastic, and there is a need for empirical physiological data in these thermal environments. Using the hermaphroditic, amphibious mangrove rivulus (Kryptolebias marmoratus), we hypothesized that compared with regular, warming diel thermal fluctuations, stochastic warm fluctuations would negatively affect physiological performance

Multi-population stochastic modeling of Ebola in Sierra Leone: Investigation of spatial heterogeneity.

A major outbreak of the Ebola virus occurred in 2014 in Sierra Leone. We investigate the spatial heterogeneity of the outbreak among districts in Sierra Leone. The stochastic discrete-time susceptible-exposed-infectious-removed (SEIR) model is used, allowing for probabilistic movements from one compartment to another. Our model accounts for heterogeneity among districts by making use of a hierarchical approach. The transmission rates are considered time-varying. It is investigated whether or not incubation period, infectious period and transmission rates are different among districts. Estimati

Queuing Models of Gene Expression: Analytical Distributions and Beyond.

Activation of a gene is a multistep biochemical process, involving recruitments of transcription factors and histone kinases as well as modification of histones. Many of these intermediate reaction steps would have been unspecified by experiments. Therefore, classical two-state models of gene expression established based on the memoryless (or Markovian) assumption would not well describe the reality in gene expression. Recent experimental data have indicated that the inactive phases of gene promoters are differently distributed, showing strong memory. Here, we use a nonexponential waiting-time

Global sensitivity analysis of hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurement with a stochastic computational model of the hepatic circulation.

Hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) is a widely employed surrogate of portal pressure gradient (PPG) in the diagnosis of portal hypertension (PHT). However, little is known about how HVPG measurement is affected by the complex vascular changes associated with PHT. In this study, we employed a computational method to quantitatively evaluate the sensitivity of HVPG measurement to various vascular factors involved in the development of sinusoidal PHT, aiming to provide a theoretical reference to guide the clinical application of HVPG measurement. The method consisted of developing a lumped-pa

Modeling the within-host dynamics of cholera: bacterial-viral interaction.

Novel deterministic and stochastic models are proposed in this paper for the within-host dynamics of cholera, with a focus on the bacterial-viral interaction. The deterministic model is a system of differential equations describing the interaction among the two types of vibrios and the viruses. The stochastic model is a system of Markov jump processes that is derived based on the dynamics of the deterministic model. The multitype branching process approximation is applied to estimate the extinction probability of bacteria and viruses within a human host during the early stage of the bacterial-

Inferring pathological states in cortical neuron microcircuits.

The brain activity is to a large extent determined by states of neural cortex microcircuits. Unfortunately, accuracy of results from neural circuits׳ mathematical models is often biased by the presence of uncertainties in underlying experimental data. Moreover, due to problems with uncertainties identification in a multidimensional parameters space, it is almost impossible to classify states of the neural cortex, which correspond to a particular set of the parameters. Here, we develop a complete methodology for determining uncertainties and the novel protocol for classifying all states in any

Do caesarean section rates 'catch-up'? Evidence from 14 European countries.

This study investigated the catch up effect of Caesarean Section (CS) birth rates across 14 European countries during 1980-2009 for the first time. The panel stationary test incorporating multiple structural breaks and cross-sectional dependence was used to provide reliable evidence for the existence of the catch up effect of CS birth rates. Our results suggested that the CS birth rates in 14 European countries have mostly exhibited signs of convergence through a steady upward trend from 1980 to 2009. Policymakers in low CS birth rate countries should be cautioned concerning the negative impac

Spatiotemporal infectious disease modeling: a BME-SIR approach.

This paper is concerned with the modeling of infectious disease spread in a composite space-time domain under conditions of uncertainty. We focus on stochastic modeling that accounts for basic mechanisms of disease distribution and multi-sourced in situ uncertainties. Starting from the general formulation of population migration dynamics and the specification of transmission and recovery rates, the model studies the functional formulation of the evolution of the fractions of susceptible-infected-recovered individuals. The suggested approach is capable of: a) modeling population dynamics within

Stochastic epidemic models revisited: analysis of some continuous performance measures.

We deal with stochastic epidemic models having a set of absorbing states. The aim of the paper is to study some continuous characteristics of the epidemic. In this sense, we first extend the classical study of the length of an outbreak by investigating the whole probability distribution of the extinction time via Laplace transforms. Moreover, we also study two almost new epidemic descriptors, namely, the time until a non-infected individual becomes infected and the time until the individual is removed from the infective group. The obtained results are illustrated by numerical examples includin
