Background and Objectives: Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is a clinical condition in which symptoms worsen upon assuming and maintaining upright posture and are ameliorated by recumbency. OI has a high prevalence in patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Limited data are available to guide the treatment of OI in ME/CFS patients. We and others have previously described patient-reported subjective improvement in symptoms using compression stockings. We hypothesized that these subjective reports would be accompanied by objective hemodynamic improvements. Material

BACKGROUND: Lymph is pumped through the collecting lymphatic vessels by both intrinsic and extrinsic forces. The intrinsic pump relies on spontaneous lymphatic contraction, which generates the pumping lymph pressure (Plp). Among healthy people with daily leg edema, a considerable number of cases are accompanied with low leg Plp. Herein, a double-blinded controlled trial was conducted in healthy female volunteers with reduced leg Plp to compare the effectiveness of a 15-29 mmHg compression stocking (Stocking A) and a 8-16 mmHg stocking (Stocking B) on elevating Plp.

PURPOSE: Nocturnal asthma is a sign of asthma worsening and could be partially due to more fluid drawn into the thorax during sleep by gravitational force and/or pharyngeal collapse in those with obstructive sleep apnea. Wearing compression stockings during the day reduces fluid shift from the legs to the neck overnight. However, the potential effect of wearing compression stockings to reduce fluid accumulation in the leg and to improve nocturnal small airway narrowing in patients with asthma has not been investigated. This study investigates whether reducing leg fluid volume by wearing compre

Little is known about the efficacy of graduated compression stockings in preventing venous thromboembolism after hip surgery. We conducted a prospective, randomised single-blind study to determine whether the addition of compression stockings to fondaparinux conferred any additional benefit. The study included 874 patients, of whom 795 could be evaluated (400 in the fondaparinux group and 395 in the fondaparinux plus compression stocking group). Fondaparinux was given post-operatively for five to nine days, either alone or combined with wearing stockings, which were worn for a mean 42 days (35

BACKGROUND: Harvest site infections after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are a known complication which represent a serious problem for patients and an increased cost of health care. There is a discrepancy in routine care regarding use of a graduated compression stocking on the leg with the saphenous vein harvest site. Some wards apply a compression stocking postoperatively to all in-hospital patients, others do not. The deep vein thrombosis prevention effect of compression stockings is well documented, but there are no studies of their possible preventive effect on harvest site infect

Background: The present study evaluated the objective effectiveness of wearing compression stockings during late pregnancy on leg edema by measuring changes in venous velocity and blood flow. Methods: Using Doppler ultrasonography, we calculated the popliteal venous velocity and blood flow and compared them in the following four groups: (1) 13 non-pregnant women (26 legs) without leg edema, (2) 23 pregnant women (46 legs) in late pregnancy without leg edema, (3) 22 pregnant women (44 legs) in late pregnancy with leg edema who were followed up without treatment, and (4) 21 pregnant women (42 le

BACKGROUND: Post thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a serious complication of deep venous thrombosis (DVT). There were always debates on the efficacy of elastic compression stockings (ECS) in prevention for post thrombotic syndrome.
OBJECTIVE: To assess effects of elastic compression stockings and ECS's wearing time on post thrombotic syndrome after diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis.
METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science were last searched on 23 November 2022 for studies assessing effects of elastic compression stockings or theirs wearing time on post thrombotic syndrome afte

BACKGROUND: The optimal strength of compression needed to prevent post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) after a proximal deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is debated. We aimed to assess whether 25 mm Hg elastic compression stockings (ECS) are non-inferior to 35 mm Hg ECS in preventing PTS after a DVT.
METHODS: In this multicentre, double-blind, non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial, we enrolled adults (≥18 years) with a first ipsilateral proximal DVT attending 46 French vascular medicine hospital departments or private practices. Participants were randomly allocated (1:1, stratified by centre, age,

Graduated compression stockings have been advocated for prevention of lymphedema after inguinal lymph node dissection (ILND) although scientific evidence of their efficacy in preventing lymphedema is lacking. The primary objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of class II compression stockings for the prevention of lymphedema in cancer patients following ILND. Secondary objectives were to investigate the influence of stockings on the occurrence of wound complications and genital edema, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and body image. Eighty patients (45 with melanoma, 35 with

OBJECTIVE: Low-dose heparin (LDH) regimens reduce the frequency of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in spinal surgery but pose a risk of postoperative hemorrhage threatening neurologic function. Pneumatic compression stocking (CS) could provide an alternative means of mechanical prophylaxis alone against DVT and PE and would possibly avoid its hemorrhagic complications.
METHODS: The efficacy of CS alone in preventing DVT and PE was evaluated in 139 patients undergoing multilevel lumbar laminectomies (average 3.8 levels) with instrumented fusions (average 1.4 levels). A

BACKGROUND: Lymphedema (LE) is a chronic condition, which refers to tissue swelling due to excess interstitial fluid accumulation or impaired lymphatic conduit. Theoretically, lymphedema-related fluid retention could affect left ventricular (LV) mechanics, which could be detailed by recent three-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography. Therefore, it was purposed to examine LV strains in LE patients before and one hour after the use of medical compression stockings and to compare findings to those of matched normal subjects.
METHODS: The study comprised 26 cases with lymphedema, however,

INTRODUCTION: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs), the most common leg ulceration worldwide, are caused by venous hypertension due to venous reflux, the failure of the calf muscle to pump, and venous flow obstruction. They are associated with a reduced quality of life, particularly in relation to pain and physical function. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is commonly employed because of its many medicinal properties, and studies have shown Hibiscus contains phytochemicals that have antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties that promote wound healing.
OBJECTIVE: The authors evaluate the efficac

OBJECTIVE: After foam sclerotherapy in the truncal saphenous vein, the clinical effects of additional eccentric compression has not yet been explored.
METHODS: Between April 2020 and February 2021, we enrolled 42 patients (84 limbs) who underwent bilateral endovenous combined therapy for great saphenous vein (GSV) reflux. Each patient received the same type of endovenous ablation in both above-the-knee GSVs (laser, radiofrequency, cyanoacrylate glue), and combined foam sclerotherapy was performed on both below-the-knee GSVs. Subsequently, we conducted a prospective randomized, single-blind, w

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism is a significant complication after knee replacement. The short-term efficacy disparities between different types of graduated elastic compression stockings (GCS) among patients undergoing total/unicompartmental knee replacement remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the trial was to compare the efficacies on hemodynamics and morphology of femoral vein between two types of GCS, providing more evidence on GCS prophylaxis among patients undergoing total/unicompartmental knee replacement.

BACKGROUND: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) poses significant risks, particularly postthrombotic syndrome (PTS). This study investigates the role of elastic compression stockings (ECS) in preventing PTS, focusing on patient adherence and its impact on therapeutic outcomes following pharmacomechanical catheter-directed thrombolysis (PMCDT) for acute iliofemoral DVT.
METHODS: This study evaluated 230 patients post-PMCDT for acute iliofemoral DVT, comparing 74 compliant and 156 noncompliant patients regarding PTS incidence and severity using Villalta and Venous Clinical Severity Score scores. Follow-

INTRODUCTION: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein. It is comprised of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism and can be potentially life-threatening. Patients undergoing surgery are at increased risk of developing VTE within hospital admission and 90 days after hospital discharge are collectively known as hospital-acquired thrombosis (HAT). Without the use of thromboprophylaxis, the untreated risk of VTE is reported to be as high as 40-60% in those undergoing major orthopaedic procedures and around 15-40% in the general surgical population.HAT accou

Case series of pressure ulcers in patients with spinal cord injury after inappropriate and prolonged application of graduated compression stockings are presented. Three adult patients with spinal cord injury were fitted with graduated compression stockings in the acute phase to prevent thromboembolism. Acute hospital staff did not monitor the skin for potential pressure ulcer because of the graduated compression stockings. Grade II pressure ulcers developed on the toes in all three cases. All pressure ulcers were managed conservatively and healed without complication. The manufacturers of grad

BACKGROUND: Although the efficacy of compression therapy through knee-length compression stockings with an interface pressure of 18-21 mmHg for leg oedemas has been confirmed by many studies, 91% of patients are still treated with a higher interface pressure.
METHOD: In this prospective open randomised monocentric study 19 patients (age ≥65, movement restrictions and symptomatic leg oedema) received knee-length compression stockings with an interface pressure of 18-21 mmHg (stocking type 1) and 23-32 mmHg (stocking type 2). AIM: The aim of this review is to try to explain the controversy by critical analysis of previously published randomized controlled trials on the value of elastic compression stockings in the treatment of acute proximal deep vein thrombosis in prevention of post-thrombotic syndrome, which forms the scientific basis for our present management.
METHODS: A research was made through Medline and Embase databases to identify relevant original articles, not abstracts, with the following keywords: post-thrombotic syndrome, deep venous thrombosis, venous thromboembolism, compression stockings, prevent
