OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the recurrence rate of gastric dilatation volvulus and the incidence of complications in subsequent coeliotomies following ventral midline gastropexy.
METHODS: The medical records of dogs treated for gastric dilatation volvulus by ventral midline gastropexy were retrospectively reviewed. Owners were contacted and invited to complete a questionnaire and to return to the clinic for ultrasonographic and radiographic follow-up.

Gastric volvulus is an uncommon condition in which an acquired torsion of the stomach results in acute or chronic gastrointestinal symptoms. We report a case of an intrathoracic organoaxial gastric volvulus presenting as a cholestatic syndrome, secondary to partial obstruction of the common bile duct by the diaphragm at the level of the hiatus. Gastric volvulus is characterized by the abnormal twisting of the stomach along its axis. It is a rare condition that can develop secondary to an underlying gastrointestinal anatomic defect such as a hiatal hernia. Gastric volvulus may present acutely with symptoms of gastric outlet obstruction and can lead to potentially fatal complications, if not treated in a timely manner. We present the case of a 74-year-old woman who presented with an acute mesenteroaxial gastric volvulus with gastric outlet obstruction that developed secondary to a large hiatal hernia.

BACKGROUND: Totally intrathoracic gastric volvulus is an uncommon presentation of hiatal hernia, in which the stomach undergoes organoaxial torsion predisposing the herniated stomach to strangulation and necrosis. A case of acute intra-abdominal gastric volvulus in an adult patient is presented. It was caused by the absence of dorsal mesogastrium fusion and was responsible for a gastric necrosis and peritonitis. The mobile spleen displaced the greater curvature of the stomach to the right. This case-report illustrates an association between an anatomical abnormality and a case of intra-abdominal gastric volvulus.

A 55-year-old wheelchair-bound woman with severe cerebral palsy was found at autopsy to have marked distention of the stomach due to a volvulus. The stomach was viable, and filled with air and fluid and had pushed the left dome of the diaphragm upwards causing marked compression of the left lung with a mediastinal shift to the right (including the heart). There was no evidence of gastric perforation, ischaemic necrosis or peritonitis. Removal of the organ block revealed marked kyphoscoliosis. Involvement of the gastrointestinal tract is rare in varicella. We report a previously healthy young girl with perforation of the stomach that appeared to be a complication of varicella. INTRODUCTION: Gastric volvulus is a rare medical emergency that can be fatal if not recognized early.
