BACKGROUND: To prepare for the introduction of a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine of restricted valency, we studied the nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Gambian villagers.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 21 villages after a census. We recorded demographic characteristics, information on medical history, and data on possible risk factors for carriage from subjects. We collected a nasopharyngeal swab specimen from each subject for isolation and serotyping of S. pneumoniae and for antibiotic susceptibility testing.
RESULTS: The prevalence of S. pneumoniae

The aims of present paper were to determine the susceptibility of the strains to the most usual antibiotics in clinical practice and to review the current recommendations to guide the most appropriate treatment. During the period october 2000 to september 2002, the patient's data (age and sex), source of the sample, diagnosis and antibiotic susceptibility were collected on Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates from microbiology laboratories in the Navarra region (555.829 inhabitants). Four hundred and sixty five isolates were identified (166 from invasive infections). Generally, isolates from ear

Selection of antibiotic-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae is an inescapable consequence of antibiotic use. The correlation between antibiotic consumption and selection of resistant organisms can be shown at every ecological level: patient, community, region or country. In the case of multiple resistance, the intensity of antibiotic selection is increased. However, different antibiotics may exert different selective powers. Because of this, co-selection of macrolide and beta-lactam resistance is an asymmetrical phenomenon: macrolides select more efficiently strains resistant to both macrolides

Streptococcus pneumoniae-induced hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is known to be a severe acute disease leading to death in one-third of cases, but data regarding the long-term follow-up are lacking. A new series of 11 patients with Streptococcus pneumoniae-induced HUS associated with meningitis and pneumonia constituted a multi-center review. Among 9 patients with a severe acute infectious disease, 3 died from meningitis and 1 from neurological sequelae after a partial recovery of renal function. The mean duration of dialysis was 32 days in patients with acute renal failure who survived the ac

AIMS: To determine the current antibiotic susceptibility patterns of Streptococcus pneumoniae from four centres in New Zealand.
METHODS: Over a six-month period in 1997, 386 consecutive clinical isolates of S pneumoniae were collected by four laboratories (Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton and Christchurch) from general practice or inpatients. Susceptibility testing for seven antibiotics was performed by each centre using the Etest.
RESULTS: Eighty-three-percent of isolates were penicillin susceptible, 12% showed intermediate resistance to penicillin and 5% were penicillin resistant. Overall, 9

Three patients, two boys of 5 months and 6 years and one girl aged 4 years, presented with acute abdominal pain, vomiting and fever, suggesting peritonitis. Imaging examinations (abdominal survey roentgenogram and (or) echography), exploratory laparotomy (in two patients) and blood cultures with growth of Streptococcus pneumoniae led to the diagnosis of primary peritonitis. Intravenous antibiotics led to recovery, in one patient complicated by paralytic ileus, which was treated surgically. Primary peritonitis is a rare condition which should be considered in the differential diagnosis of child

BACKGROUND: Single-agent causes of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) are uncommon. Streptococcus pneumoniae, as the suspected sole causative bacterium, has been reported since the 1800s. In the postantibiotic era, 46 cases have been reported, with a high mortality rate.
CASE: We report a case of S pneumoniae as a single bacterial etiology of PID. This single bacterial species was documented by separate cervicovaginal, culdocentesis and laparoscopic cultures.
CONCLUSION: It is unusual to identify an uncommon, single organism as the causative bacterial species in PID in an immunocompetent pati

Six of 36 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated in our laboratory during 1977 showed relative resistance to penicillin G. This level of resistance was detectable only by the broth dilution method. Using the disk diffusion method, all six strains appeared susceptible (zone size > 29 mm).

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a leading cause of pneumonia and meningitis worldwide. Many different serotypes co-circulate endemically in any one location1,2. The extent and mechanisms of spread and vaccine-driven changes in fitness and antimicrobial resistance remain largely unquantified. Here using geolocated genome sequences from South Africa (n = 6,910, collected from 2000 to 2014), we developed models to reconstruct spread, pairing detailed human mobility data and genomic data. Separately, we estimated the population-level changes in fitness of strains that are included (vaccine type (VT))

Due to the emergence of non-vaccine serotypes in vaccinated populations, Streptococcus pneumoniae remains a major global health challenge despite advances in vaccine development. Serotype 16F is among the predominant non-vaccine serotypes identified among vaccinated infants in South Africa (SA). To characterize lineages and antimicrobial resistance in 16F isolates obtained from South Africa and place the local findings in a global context, we analysed 10 923 S. pneumoniae carriage isolates obtained from infants recruited as part of a broader SA birth cohort. We inferred serotype, resistance pr

Co-infections with pathogens and secondary bacterial infections play significant roles during the pandemic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pathogenetic process, caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Notably, co-infections with Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae), as a major Gram-positive pathogen causing pneumonia or meningitis, severely threaten the diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis of COVID-19 worldwide. Accumulating evidences have emerged indicating that S. pneumoniae evolves multiple virulence factors, including pneumolysin (PLY) and sortase A (Sr

OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) is an important commensal and pathogenic bacterium responsible for pneumonia, meningitis and other invasive diseases. Pneumolysin (PLY) is the major virulence factor that contributes significantly to the interaction between S. pneumoniae and the host.
KEY FINDINGS: In this study, the results of antibacterial analysis, the haemolysis test and the Western blotting assay showed that acacetin inhibited PLY-mediated pore-forming activity caused by S. pneumoniae culture precipitates and purified PLY without anti-S. pneumoniae activity. In additio

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a causal agent of otitis media, pneumonia, meningitis and severe cases of septicemia. This human pathogen infects elderly people and children with a high mortality rate of approximately one million deaths per year worldwide. Antibiotic-resistance of S. pneumoniae strains is an increasingly serious health problem; therefore, new therapies capable of combating pneumococcal infections are indispensable. The application of gold nanoparticles has emerged as an option in the control of bacterial infections; however, the mechanism responsible for bacterial cell lysis remai

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) has shown major changes in recent years. On the other hand, macrolide antibiotics are being increasingly used in clinical practice. Several studies have reported increased resistance to this group of antibiotics, while there is no comprehensive information in this area. Accordingly, the present study was designed to estimate the resistance of S. pneumoniae to macrolides in Iran.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this review, articles (2000-2017), evaluating the level and type of S. pneumoniae resistance to macrolides in

BACKGROUND: Penicillin-resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae is mainly due to alterations in genes encoding the target enzymes for beta-lactams, the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). However, non-PBP genes are altered in beta-lactam-resistant laboratory mutants and confer decreased susceptibility to beta-lactam antibiotics. Two piperacillin resistant laboratory mutants of Streptococcus pneumoniae R6 contain mutations in the putative glycosyltransferase gene cpoA. The CpoA gene is part of an operon including another putative glycosyltransferase gene spr0982, both of which being homologous to

Streptococcus pneumoniae is both an aggressive pathogen and a normal part of the human respiratory microbiome. Clinicians and microbiologists have struggled to develop tests that can identify pneumococcal respiratory infection and accurately distinguish colonization from invasive disease. Molecular methods hold the promise of an improved ability to rapidly detect microorganisms in respiratory secretions and to make an accurate diagnosis; however, interpretation of diagnostic testing for S. pneumoniae remains problematic. Molecular assays, such as those targeting the pneumolysin gene, may cross

Marked Streptococcus pneumoniae tolerance is attributed to a penicillin and macrolide resistance genotypes, yet no report has, to our knowledge, compared the ability of these two genotypes to grow. Deviations in the number of clinical appearances of Streptococcus pneumoniae depend on the combination of these genotypes, thought primarily due to the individual strain growth. To test this, we compared ATCC6303 and a strain of each genotype with an absorption spectrophotometer. Time points-T0, T2, T4, T8, T10, T12, and T24-were compared to each of the following factors: initial value, dullness tim

The pneumococcal heptavalent conjugate vaccine protects children aged less than 2 years old from invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Efficacy is 89-93% in the US population and 71-86% in European studies. The vaccine confers active immunization against the main serotypes causing IPD (4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F y 23F). We describe 2 children who presented with pneumococcal meningitis caused by nonvaccine serotypes. As a result of the widespread use of the heptavalent vaccine, there may be a shift in the serotypes causing IPD.
