Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric condition that develops following exposure to a traumatic event. Individuals with this condition experience numerous physiological and behavioral alterations, including intrusive memories, avoidance of trauma-related stimuli, heightened anxiety, hypervigilance, impaired cognition, elevated resting heart rate and blood pressure, and altered neuroendocrine function, to name a few. In most patients, currently available pharmacological and psychological treatments are insufficient to alleviate the array of symptoms associated with

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Women are twice as likely to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared to men after a traumatic experience. The purpose of this mini review was to explore recent research on biological contributors to this sex difference.
RECENT FINDINGS: We identified 51 studies published since 2019. Studies found that beyond the influence of sex on the prevalence and symptoms of PTSD, there is evidence for and against sex-based differences in genetic and epigenetic factors (n = 8), brain structure and function (n = 11), neuroendocrine and inflammatory responses (n = 5), and i

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder that occurs following exposure to traumatic events. Recent evidence suggests that PTSD may be a risk factor for the development of subsequent neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's dementia and Parkinson's disease. Identification of biomarkers known to be associated with neurodegeneration in patients with PTSD would shed light on the pathophysiological mechanisms linking these disorders and would also help in the development of preventive strategies for neurodegenerative disorders in PTSD. With this background,

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following childbirth is a significant mental health risk for women globally. However, it remains a neglected cause, particularly in low-income countries like Pakistan. This paper explores the unique challenges faced by women in such settings, including limited access to healthcare and social support, cultural norms, and stigma surrounding mental health. The diagnosis and causes of postpartum PTSD are discussed, along with its effects on both mothers and their infants. The lack of awareness and training among healthcare professionals in recognizing and trea

BACKGROUND: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric entity developed by those who have been through a traumatic experience. The civil wars in Syria and neighboring countries during the past few years might trigger such experiences, and the same could be argued for the difficult journey from the actual war zones to Europe.
PURPOSE: To determine the level of PTSD among Arabic-speaking refugees in a Greek refugee camp, who originate primarily from Syria.
METHODS: This study involves (N = 73) Syrian refugees, all located in Greek camp. Data were gathered using the civilian version

BACKGROUND: Both post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and insomnia are independently associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular mortality. The objective of this study is to determine whether PTSD plus insomnia is associated with a higher risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) than either condition alone in a large cohort of veterans.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the national Veterans Health Administration (VHA) electronic medical records covering veterans 18 years or older with the diagnosis of PTSD, insomnia, or both from January 1, 2015, to December

"Timely, near, and expectation" is the main principle of battlefield rescue for military combat stress reaction (CSR). Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most common form of CSR and a long-term persistent mental disorder that is caused by unusual threatening or catastrophic psychological trauma. Chinese medicine (CM) has abundant resources, is simple, easy to master, with few side effects. This article summarizes the cellular and animal experimental mechanisms of CM treatment on PTSD, suggesting that traditional Chinese herbs and acupuncture can protect brain functional areas, and ad

UNLABELLED: Moral injury is the profound psychological distress that can arise following participating in, or witnessing, events that transgress an individual's morals and include harming, betraying, or failure to help others, or being subjected to such events, e.g. being betrayed by leaders. It has been primarily researched in the military, but it also found in other professionals such as healthcare workers coping with the COVID-19 pandemic and civilians following a wide range of traumas. In this article, we describe how to use cognitive therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (CT-PTSD) to

The treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder is one of the priorities of the armed forces' health service, but there are few measures for families, who are nevertheless the first to be affected. At the Robert-Picqué army training hospital in Bordeaux, an information and exchange day for carers was set up in 2018. It takes place once every term. Here is a look at how it works, its benefits and its limitations.

INTRODUCTION: The recommended treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are psychological therapies and medication, but the best approach is still discussed. Exposure to traumatic events in psychotherapy tends to cause high drop-out rates. Likewise, little effect or adverse events of medications may lead to attrition. The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of treatment by psychotherapy and medications. An additional aim was to explore the combinations of treatment modalities in adults with PTSD and to investigate differences in drop-out rates.
METHODS: A systematic revie

BACKGROUND: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can result from occupational exposures and poses a considerable burden to workers, their families, workplaces and to society in general.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to conduct a rapid review of the literature to answer the question: "Which occupations have exposures that may lead to a PTSD diagnosis?"
METHODS: A rapid review was conducted in six steps: review question development, literature search, study selection (inclusion/exclusion), study characterization, data extraction, and data synthesis.
RESULTS: The search identified 3428 unique

BACKGROUND: The problems in sexual functioning among patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are often overlooked, although scientific research confirms high rates of sexual dysfunctions (SD) particularly among veterans with PTSD. The main objective of this study was to systematically identify predictors of SD among veterans with PTSD.
METHODS: Three hundred veterans with PTSD were included in the cross-sectional study. The subjects were assessed by the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and self-report questionnaires: PCL-5, i.e., PTSD Checklist for Diagnostic a

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To report an analysis of the concept of perinatal post-traumatic stress disorder.
BACKGROUND: Prevalence of perinatal post-traumatic stress disorder is rising in the USA, with 9% of the U.S. perinatal population diagnosed with the disorder and an additional 18% being at risk for the condition. Left untreated, adverse maternal-child outcomes result in increased morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs.
DESIGN: Concept analysis via Walker and Avant's approach.
METHODS: The databases Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medline, Academic Sear

PURPOSE: Our objective was to explore if women who experience emergency peripartum hysterectomy (EPH), a type of severe maternal morbidity, are more likely to screen positive for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared to women who did not experience EPH.
METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort design, women were sampled through online communities. Participants completed online screens for PTSD. Additionally, women provided sociodemographic, obstetric, psychiatric, and psychosocial information. We conducted bivariate and logistic regression analyses, then Monte Carlo simulation and prope

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUD) frequently co-occur, and their combination can increase poor health outcomes as well as mortality.
METHODS: Using PUBMED and the list of references from key publications, this review article covered the epidemiology, neurobiology and pharmacotherapy of PTSD with comorbid alcohol, opiate, and cannabis use disorders. These SUD represent two with and one without FDA approved pharmacotherapies.
RESULTS: SUD is two to three times more likely among individuals with lifetime PTSD, and suicide, which i

Patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are frequently symptomatic despite being on medications currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for PTSD. There is evidence to support the notion that prazosin is effective for PTSD nightmares. However, PTSD-related nightmares often do not resolve completely on a low dose of prazosin. The capacity of prazosin to treat daytime symptoms of PTSD which are distressing to patients has not been well studied. Clinicians are reluctant to increase the dose of prazosin due to side effect concerns. To date, the highest reported dose of
