INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been proposed as a risk factor for chronification of migraine. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of PTSD and traumatic life events (TE) in patients with episodic (EM) and chronic migraine (CM) and their impact on clinical parameters, other comorbidities, and migraine biomarkers.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with EM and CM according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders (third edition; beta version) were recruited at a headache unit and a primary care centre. We used questionnaires validated for

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) often co-occur in the context of threat to one's life. These conditions also have an overlapping symptomatology and include symptoms of anxiety, poor concentration and memory problems. A major challenge has been articulating the underlying neurobiology of these overlapping conditions. The primary aim of this study was to compare intrinsic functional connectivity between mTBI (without PTSD) and PTSD (without mTBI). The study included functional MRI data from 176 participants: 42 participants with mTBI, 67 with PTSD and

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are risk factors for early onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may accelerate the progression rate of AD pathology. As amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques are a hallmark of AD pathology, we hypothesized that TBI and PTSD might increase Aβ accumulation in the brain.
METHODS: We examined PET and neuropsychological data from Vietnam War veterans compiled by the US Department of Defense Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, to examine the spatial distribution of Aβ in male veterans' who had experienced a TBI and/o

Increasing evidence indicates that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may develop following traumatic brain injury (TBI), despite most patients having no conscious memory of their accident. This prospective study examined the frequency, timing of onset, symptom profile, and trajectory of PTSD and its psychiatric comorbidities during the first 4 years following moderate-to-severe TBI. Participants were 85 individuals (78.8% male) with moderate or severe TBI recruited following admission to acute rehabilitation between 2005 and 2010. Using the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and

OBJECTIVE: Lifetime and 12-month prevalence of traumatic events and DSM-IV post-traumatic stress disorder as well as risk factors and comorbidity patterns were investigated in a representative community sample (n = 3021, aged 14-24 years).
METHOD: Traumatic events and PTSD were assessed with the Munich Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI).
RESULTS: Although 26% of male subjects and 17.7% of female subjects reported at least one traumatic event, only a few qualified for a full PTSD diagnosis (1% of males and 2.2% of females). Traumatic events and PTSD were strongly associated w

We investigated traumatic events, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and psychiatric comorbidity in 450 men and women entering private, hospital-based treatments for cocaine dependence. Overall prevalence of event exposure was the same for women and men; however, women were approximately five times more likely than men to be diagnosed with lifetime and current PTSD. Women experienced more PTSD than men even when exposed to the same type of event. In most subjects with PTSD, onset of the disorder preceded onset of cocaine dependence. Subjects with PTSD were more likely than those without PT

Fifty-six refugees and asylum seekers, with and without post-traumatic stress symptoms, and their autobiographical memories about traumatic experiences were evaluated with the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire, which allows the evaluation of traumatic symptoms and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and the Phenomenological Questionnaire on Autobiographical Memory (CCFRA/ PQAM) that allows analysing the characteristics of their memories about quality, associated emotions, and memory accessibility. Results showed that 30.4% of participants met criteria for PTSD, which affects the difficulty to pu

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is usually considered a psychiatric disorder upon emotional trauma. However, with the rising number of conflicts and traffic accidents around the world, the incidence of PTSD has skyrocketed along with traumatic brain injury (TBI), a complex neuropathological disease due to external physical force and is also the most common concurrent disease of PTSD. Recently, the overlap between PTSD and TBI is increasingly attracting attention, as it has the potential to stimulate the emergence of novel treatments for both conditions. Of note, treatments exploiting the

OBJECTIVE: The review aimed to summarize the existing knowledge base regarding post-traumatic stress disorder after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and try to guide future research.
METHOD: Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases were used to identify original studies that explored the relationship between severe TBI and post-traumatic stress disorder.
RESULTS: A total of 13 studies were included in the review. They have been examined in terms of potentially compatible and incompatible mechanisms, as well as of possible confounding factors in relation to the diagnosis of post-trauma

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common anxiety mental disorder and can be manifested after exposure to a real or perceived life-threatening event. Increased noradrenaline and adrenaline in plasma and urine have been documented in PTSD. Dopamine-β-hydroxylase (DBH) catalyzes the conversion of dopamine to noradrenaline and consequently, DBH inhibition reduces catecholamines. Our aim was to evaluate if nepicastat treatment decreases PTSD signs in an animal model. Wild-type (129x1/SvJ) female mice were submitted to PTSD induction protocol. DBH-inhibitor nepicastat (30 mg/kg) or vehicle

OBJECTIVE: To assess the proportion of pediatric patients who develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) attributed to traumatic brain injury (TBI).
METHODS: PubMed and Embase were searched from database inception until January 26, 2019. Two independent investigators screened titles, abstracts, and subsequently, full-text articles. Following this, the same investigators also extracted data relevant for the scope of this review.
RESULTS: Ten articles were included in this review. In these, six unique cohorts were described, with relative frequencies of PTSD attributed TBI ranging from 3.3%

Background and Objectives: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex disorder whose etiopathogenesis involves both biological and environmental factors. The aims of the present study were to retrospectively analyze risk factors in young patients with AN and to assess differences in clinical and eating-related symptoms between patients with and without a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and with or without a history of acknowledged risk factors. Materials and Methods: Sixty-four patients with AN (<25 years old) were recruited and completed an anamnestic evaluation and the following s

BACKGROUND: Although it is well established that prisoners commonly have histories of childhood trauma, little is known about mediators between exposure to trauma and criminal behaviour.
HYPOTHESES: We hypothesised that the experience of trauma in adulthood, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and emotional dysregulation would mediate the relationship between childhood traumatic events and later criminal behaviour.
METHODS: Eighty-nine female prisoners were interviewed using standardised scales, in a cross-sectional study design. History of traumatic events, DSM-5 PTSD and emotional regula

Studies of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are complicated by wide variability in the intensity and duration of prior stressors in patient participants, secondary effects of chronic psychiatric illness, and a variable history of treatment with psychiatric medications. In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, patient samples have often been small, and they were not often compared to similarly stressed patients without PTSD in order to control for general stress effects. Findings from these studies have been inconsistent. The present study investigated whole-brain microstructural altera

There is increasing evidence that a proportion of severe traumatically brain injured (TBI) patients do suffer post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of this study was to investigate the predictors of PTSD following severe TBI in a sample of 96 patients who sustained a severe TBI, of whom 27% satisfied diagnostic criteria for PTSD. The Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Interview, the Coping Style Questionnaire, and the Functional Assessment Measure was administered to these patients 6 months after hospital discharge. Avoidant coping style, behavioural coping style, and a history of prior u

This structured narrative literature review examined current evidence on the identification and management of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related symptoms in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Literature was identified through searches of PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar, focusing on peer-reviewed English-language studies published between 2010 and 2025. Studies were included if they examined PTSD, trauma-related symptoms, assessment, diagnosis, or interventions in autistic children and adolescents, or provided an ASD-specific or broader neur

Trauma in childhood and adolescence has long-term negative consequences in brain development and behavior and increases the risk for psychiatric disorders. Among them, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during adolescence illustrates the connection between trauma and substance misuse, as adolescents may utilize substances to cope with PTSD. Drug misuse may in turn lead to neuroadaptations in learning processes that facilitate the consolidation of traumatic memories that perpetuate PTSD. This reflects, apart from common genetic and epigenetic modifications, overlapping neurocircuitry engagem

Objective: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common risk factor for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, not all individuals with PTSD develop OUD when exposed to opioids. As the underlying moderators remain unexplored, this analysis aimed to determine if non-traumatic adverse experiences and stressors prior to the age of 18 moderate the relationship between PTSD and OUD. Methods: In a matched dataset (n = 830) of individuals with or without PTSD who reported lifetime use of opioids, the following non-traumatic adverse experiences and stressors were assessed: emotional abuse, emotional
