Short-term exposure to noise on stroke volume and left ventricular contractility: A repeated-measure study.

Prolonged exposure to noise has been associated with cardiovascular disease, but the possible mechanism for its influence on cardiac activity is unknown. This study investigated the acute effects of noise exposure on 24-h ambulatory cardiac parameters among male workers. We recruited 75 volunteers in an aviation-industry cohort in 2009. Personal noise-exposure levels and individual cardiac parameters, including stroke volume (SV) and left ventricular contractility (LVC), were measured simultaneously over 24 h on working and nonworking days. Linear mixed-effects regression models were used to e

Association Between Net Vertebral Artery Flow Volume and Non-AF Stroke: A Retrospective 2-Year Analysis.

Objectives: Association between net vertebral artery flow volume (NVAFV) and stroke types remains unclear. We hypothesize NVAFV is low in patients with posterior circulation infarction (PCI) and an ideal cut-off value for discriminating PCI from anterior circulation infarction (ACI) and controls may be present. Materials and Methods: As study candidates, we retrospectively enrolled hospitalized patients with first-time non-AF stroke within 2-years period. Consecutive non-AF, non-stroke subjects were enrolled as the control group. We compared NVAFV values among the PCI, ACI, and control groups.

Stroke volume variation and serum creatinine changes during abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery: a time-integrated analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) surgery with suprarenal clamping are at high risk for acute kidney injury (AKI) and major cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE). We aimed to assess whether the stroke volume variation (SVV), a measure of hemodynamic instability, is associated with AKI in hypertensive patients undergoing elective AAA surgery with suprarenal clamping. METHODS: In a cohort of 51 hypertensive patients, we performed serial measurements of SVV (n = 459) and serum creatinine (sCr) (n = 255). AKI was defined according to the KDIGO clinical practice

Can stroke volume variation be an alternative to central venous pressure in patients undergoing kidney transplantation?

BACKGROUND: Stroke volume variation (SVV) is known to be a simple and less invasive hemodynamic parameter for evaluating fluid responsiveness and preload status. Central venous pressure (CVP) has been targeted to achieve an adequate level for improving the graft perfusion and long-term graft function in kidney transplantation (KT) recipients, despite the various potential complications. The aim of this study was to investigate whether SVV could substitute for CVP in guiding intravascular volume management during KT. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 635 patients who underwent KT bec

Infarct volume, neurological severity and PAF binding to platelets of patients with acute cerebral ischemic stroke.

Studies show that Platelet Activating Factor (PAF) is involved in the cerebrovascular response to ischemia, and that its binding to platelets may change in stroke victims. The purpose of this study was to determine whether binding of PAF to platelets of stroke patients could serve as an index for determining the volume of ischemic strokes and severity of neurological presentation. Thirteen stroke patients and 21 healthy controls were studied. The neurological severity of these stroke patients was evaluated by the Scandinavian Stroke Scale. Infarct volume was assessed by planimetric measures of

Combined first pass and equilibrium radionuclide cardiographic determination of stroke volume for quantitation of valvular regurgitation.

A new noninvasive procedure for quantitation of cardiac valve regurgitation was evaluated using a combination of first pass and gated equilibrium radionuclide cardiography in 38 subjects with and without cardiac valve disease. Left-sided cardiac catheterization was performed to determine the severity of mitral incompetence and aortic regurgitation semiquantitatively. In healthy subjects and in patients without valve disease, stroke volumes were nearly identical with the two methods and the correlation was high (r = 0.98 [p less than 0.001]). The mean regurgitation fraction was 13% in patients

A comparative analysis of SCALE-CTP and RAPID in determining the affected brain volumes of patients with ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography perfusion (CTP) is widely used to treat acute strokes. The affected brain volume, measured based on the threshold value in the calculated CTP map, has helped guide treatment decisions. We proposed a new software program developed for CTP analysis, SCALE-CTP, and compared the affected brain volumes estimated using RAPID and SCALE-CTP. METHODS: We recruited 362 individuals from the local hospital to evaluate the concordance between SCALE-CTP and RAPID in predicting affected brain volumes, including relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF) <30 % and time-to-maximum con

Acute Ischemic Stroke Infarct Topology: Association with Lesion Volume and Severity of Symptoms at Admission and Discharge.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute stroke presentation and outcome depend on both ischemic infarct volume and location. We aimed to determine the association between acute ischemic infarct topology and lesion volume and stroke severity at presentation and discharge. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent MR imaging within 24 hours of symptom onset or last seen well were included. Infarcts were segmented and coregistered on the Montreal Neurological Institute-152 brain map. Voxel-based analyses were performed to determine the distribution of infarct lesions associa

Lesion volume and location can be estimated by analysis of the new NIH Stroke Scale picture description.

In January 2024, the picture stimuli used to elicit language on the NIH Stroke Scale were updated. Descriptions elicited using the now-retired Cookie Theft picture are informative regarding the size and location of stroke. An important dimension of validation for the new stimuli is to demonstrate that the language patients produce when describing the new Precarious Painter picture that is now part of the NIH Stroke Scale is similarly informative. Participants included 62 patients with acute ischemic stroke (24 left and 38 right) compared with 10 control participants hospitalized following tran

Aqueductal CSF stroke volume is associated with the burden of perivascular space enlargement in chronic adult hydrocephalus.

The inflow of CSF into perivascular spaces (PVS) in the brain is crucial for clearing waste molecules. Inefficiency in PVS flow leads to neurodegeneration. Failure of PVS flushing is associated with CSF flow impairment in the intracranial hydrodynamic condition of CSF hypo-pulsatility. However, enlarged PVS (ePVS), a finding indicative of PVS flow dysfunction, is also present in patients with derangement of CSF dynamics characterized by CSF hyper-pulsatility, which increases CSF flow. Intriguingly, two opposite intracranial hydrodynamic conditions would lead to the same result of impairing the

Low Serum Vitamin D Is Independently Associated with Larger Lesion Volumes after Ischemic Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Despite its high prevalence, known association with vascular disease and stroke incidence and fatality, little is known about the contribution of vitamin D status to a worse outcome after ischemic stroke. Therefore, we sought to assess whether low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D), a marker of vitamin D status, is predictive of the ischemic infarct volume and whether it relates to a worse outcome. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed prospective, consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients evaluated from January 2013 to January 2014 at a tertiary referral center. All patients (n

Comparison of conventional CTA and volume perfusion CTA in evaluation of cerebral arterial vasculature in acute stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: CTA-like datasets can be reconstructed from whole-brain VPCTA. The aim of our study was to compare VPCTA with CTA for detection of intracranial stenosis and occlusion in stroke patients. Omitting CTA from stroke CT could reduce radiation dose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred sixty-three patients were included in this retrospective analysis. Inclusion criterion was suspected stroke within 4.5 hours after onset of symptoms. All examinations were performed on a 128-section multidetector CT scanner. Axial, coronal, and sagittal maximum intensity projections were reconst

Infarct volume as a surrogate or auxiliary outcome measure in ischemic stroke clinical trials. The RANTTAS Investigators.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Reduction in infarct volume is the standard measure of therapeutic success in animal stroke models. Reduction in infarct volume has been advocated as a biological surrogate or auxiliary outcome measure for human stroke clinical trials to replace or supplement deficit, disability, and global clinical scales. However, few studies have investigated correlations between infarct volume and clinical end points in acute ischemic stroke patients. METHODS: CT scans at days 6 to 11 were acquired prospectively in 191 fully eligible patients enrolled in the Randomized Trial of Tir

[Technic of tetrapolar rheography for determining cardiac stroke volume in patients with mitral stenosis in the late stages].

On the basis of model and clinical investigations using differential rheograms , a conclusion was drawn that in measuring the curve of Ad amplitude from the isoelectric line, the cardiac stroke volume ( SHV ) averaging 30-80 ml as determined by the method of tetrapolar chest rheography and calculated by the formula of Kubi cek et al. (formula see text) was in full agreement with the SHV determined by Fick's method for the same heart rate. When calculated by formula (formula see text) or (formula see text) which used (formula see text) or delta Z found by extrapolating the rheographic curve acc

Peri-Stenotic Stagnation Associates With Red Blood Cell-Rich Thrombi, Linked to Stroke Recurrence and Lesion Volume.

BACKGROUND: Despite antiplatelet therapy, plaque-induced strokes recur frequently. This recurrence may reflect thrombus heterogeneity driven by peri-stenotic stagnation and red blood cell (RBC) entrapment. The clinical implications of such variations for stroke outcomes remain unclear. We investigated whether plaque-derived RBC-rich thrombi, indicated by the clot sign, were associated with recurrence, lesion volume, and stenosis-related hemodynamics. METHODS: Because asymptomatic plaque rupture limits direct evaluation of hemodynamics and thrombus compositions, we performed a hybrid human-ani

Cardiac energetics in severe mitral regurgitation: relationship with eccentric hypertrophy, stroke volume, and effects of valve repair.

AIMS: Understanding changes in ATP metabolism may lead to improved risk stratification in severe primary mitral regurgitation (MR). Here, we seek to compare the energetic phenotype of volume-overload pathological hypertrophy with athletic hypertrophy and with the normal heart under catecholamine stress. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nineteen severe-MR patients underwent cardiac magnetic resonance and 31P-spectroscopy for energetics, including phosphocreatine to adenosine triphosphate ratio (PCr/ATP), the pseudo-first-order forward rate constant of the creatine kinase reaction (k f) and CK flux (k f ×

Vagus nerve stimulation reduces spreading depolarization burden and cortical infarct volume in a rat model of stroke.

Cortical spreading depolarization (SD) waves negatively affect neuronal survival and outcome after ischemic stroke. We here aimed to investigate the effects of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) on SDs in a rat model of focal ischemia. To this end, we delivered non-invasive VNS (nVNS) or invasive VNS (iVNS) during permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), and found that both interventions significantly reduced the frequency of SDs in the cortical peri-infarct area compared to sham VNS, without affecting relative blood flow changes, blood pressure, heart rate or breathing rate.
