First case of a natural infection in a domestic cat (Felis catus) with the canid heart worm Angiostrongylus vasorum.

Cardiopulmonary nematodes in cats include different parasite species affecting feline lungs and the heart, with the metastrongyloid Aelurostrongylus abstrusus being the most frequent feline lungworm worldwide. The present case report describes an 11-month-old male neutered European short hair cat which presented with generalised subcutaneous oedema and pleural and peritoneal effusions. According to clinical examination, abdominal imaging and laboratory analyses, a tentative diagnosis of severe glomerulopathy with massive proteinuria was made. Due to worsening of the clinical signs despite ther

Pathological and histological findings associated with the feline lungworm Troglostrongylus brevior.

Troglostrongylus brevior is a neglected feline lungworm species, which has been increasingly reported in the Mediterranean area, although scant data are available on the respiratory alterations it causes in cats. Therefore, we describe the gross and histological lesions of a 20-week old kitten that succumbed due to the onset of a fulminant respiratory failure. At necropsy, a catarrhal exudate was observed in the airways, along with nematodes in the trachea and bronchi. The lungs were processed for histological examination and serial pulmonary sections were performed. A total of 14 nematodes we

Feline aelurostrongylosis and canine angiostrongylosis: a challenging diagnosis for two emerging verminous pneumonia infections.

Aelurostrongylus abstrusus and Angiostrongylus vasorum (Nematoda, Metastrongyloidea) are causative agents of verminous feline and canine pneumonia. Both are presently emerging in several geographical areas and are of major clinical importance. Given the range of parasitic and non-parasitic pathogens which may cause cardio-respiratory distress in dogs and cats, the unequivocal specific diagnosis of both diseases is pivotal for unravelling their epidemiology and central to therapy and control. Several conventional clinico-pathologic, diagnostic imaging and parasitological approaches are currentl

Effects of Protostrongylus sp. and Pneumocystis sp. on the pulmonary tissue and the condition of mountain and brown hares from Finland.

Mountain hares (Lepus timidus) and brown hares (Lepus europaeus) shot by hunters in several game management districts in southern and central Finland during the hunting season from September to the end of February 1998-2001 were examined for Protostrongylus sp. and Pneumocystis sp. Of the mountain hares, 96.5% (194/201) were infected with the lungworm Protostrongylus sp. and 16.9% (32/189) had cyst forms of the fungus Pneumocystis sp. in the lungs. The prevalence of the lungworm and fungus in brown hares was 60% (18/30) and 20.0% (6/30), respectively. The tissue changes associated with the lun

Animal model of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and Heligmosomoides polygyrus.

Animal models of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and Heligmosomoides polygyrus infection are powerful tools for the investigation of the basic biology of immune responses and protective immunity. In particular, they model the induction and maintenance of Th2 type immune responses and exhibit all the requisite hallmarks of CD4 T cell-dependent IgE production, eosinophilia, mastocytosis, and mucus production. This chapter describes simple, cost-effective techniques for using and maintaining these easy-to-work-with parasites in the context of a modern laboratory.

Eosinophilic ileitis with perforation caused by Angiostrongylus (Parastrongylus) costaricensis. A case study and review.

Angiostrongylus costaricensis (classified under the more specific genus Parastrongylus by different authors) is a filiform intestinal nematode endemic to Central and South America, which afflicts primarily the pediatric population 1 to 13 years of age. Only three cases of adult infections have been previously documented outside the endemic region. To our knowledge, we report the first such case in the western United States, as well as the oldest patient yet recorded. Our patient is a 73-year-old woman living in Los Angeles who presented with an acute abdomen 4 weeks following a 5-month visit t

Experimental studies of Elaphostrongylus rangiferi in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus): life cycle, pathogenesis, and pathology.

A total of 12 reindeer calves (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) were given 200-1,000 infective larvae of Elaphostrongylus rangiferi and autopsied 2 1/2-196 days post inoculation (p.i.). The larvae penetrated venules of the abomasal wall and followed the bloodstream via the liver to the lungs. In the lungs the larvae entered pulmonary venules and spread to all tissues via the general circulation. Many larvae that lodged in arterial vessels outside the spinal cord migrated into the cord along the spinal nerves. Nematodes matured in the central nervous system (CNS), and then migrated to the skeletal m

Immune-mediated regulation of chronic intestinal nematode infection.

Gastrointestinal nematode infection is extremely prevalent worldwide in humans and animals. Infection levels vary between individuals in infected populations and exhibit a negative binomial distribution, and some individuals appear to be predisposed to certain infection levels. Moreover, infection tends to be chronic, despite evidence for the acquisition of some degree of acquired immunity. The host is subject to constant and repeated antigenic challenge, and individuals vary in the response they make. While a considerable amount of information is emerging on the immunoregulatory mechanisms op

New taxonomic insights into three cyathostomine nematodes of Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus).

Elephants harbour intestinal nematode infections, particularly cyathostomine nematodes (Cyathostomini: Strongylidae). Monitoring helminths in rare and endemic species is crucial, as infections can contribute to population declines. The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus), a subspecies of the Asian elephant, is native exclusively to the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The studies on nematodes of Sumatran elephants remain limited. In this study, three cyathostomine nematodes not previously reported from Indonesia - Quilonia renniei, Murshidia (Murshidia) falcifera, and M. (M.) murshida

Gastrointestinal helminth parasites of the common wallaroo or euro, Osphranter robustus (Gould) (Marsupialia: Macropodidae) from Australia.

The gastrointestinal helminth parasites of 170 common wallaroos or euros, Osphranter robustus (Gould), collected from all mainland states in which the species occurs as well as the Northern Territory, are presented, including previously published data. A total of 65 species of helminths were encountered, including four species of anoplocephalid cestodes found in the bile ducts and small intestine, and 61 species of strongylid nematodes, all but two of which occurring in the stomach, and with the remainder occurring in the terminal ileum, caecum and colon. Among the mainland subspecies of O. ro

Prevalence and density of Elaphostrongylus rangiferi larvae in faecal samples of semi-domestic reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Norway 2013-16.

BACKGROUND: The reindeer brainworm, Elaphostrongylus rangiferi, is a protostrongylid parasite of reindeer that has caused severe disease outbreaks in reindeer husbandry. E. rangiferi is considered ubiquitous in Norway, though most published prevalence studies are from Finnmark county only. In the present study, faecal samples were collected over three winter seasons (2013-2016) from eight herds of semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) distributed all over the reindeer herding area in Norway. Baermann's technique was used to identify E. rangiferi larvae. The de

Efficacy of X-Ray Phytosanitary Irradiation on the Infectivity and Reproduction of Angiostrongylus cantonensis in Experimentally Infected Rats.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a globally distributed nematode and the leading cause of eosinophilic meningitis in humans. As a global hotspot for this disease, Hawaii's agricultural exports may be contributing to the spread of A. cantonensis. Phytosanitary irradiation doses of 150 or 400 Gy provide quarantine security against multiple insect pests. We evaluated the in vitro and in vivo effects of phytosanitary irradiation on infectious, third-stage, A. cantonensis larvae. In vitro experiments directly exposed larvae to irradiation doses ranging from 200 to 1,000 Gy. Results showed low mortali

Lizards as sentinels for the distribution of Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

The rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a zoonotic metastrongyloid nematode currently considered an emerging pathogen. Originating in Southeast Asia, this nematode has spread to tropical and subtropical parts of the world via its invasive rodent and gastropod hosts. On the island of Tenerife in the Canary archipelago, the A. cantonensis invasion was recognized more than a decade ago. The endemic lizard Gallotia galloti has been identified as a paratenic host of this nematode in the Canary Island ecosystem. Because this lizard species is the most abundant reptile in Tenerife, we tested i
