Cytological spectrum of salivary gland lesions and their correlation with epidemiological parameters.

BACKGROUND: The role fine-needle aspiration (FNA) in the diagnosis of salivary gland lesions has evolved over the years. Although clinical and radiological parameters help to narrow the differential diagnosis the tissue diagnosis still remains the gold standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is from January 2013 to December 2015 in our Department of Pathology where 170 salivary gland lesions were aspirated. The aim of the present study was to analyze adequacy rate in relation to the size of lesion and to evaluate varied cytological spectrum of salivary gland lesions with emphasis on diffe

[Carcinosarcoma of the submaxillary gland].

Salivary gland carcinosarcoma is a rare neoplasm, with a poor prognosis, that should not be confused with the more common carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma, in which the epithelial component alone is malignant. The authors report one case of carcinosarcoma of the submandibular gland, with no previous history of pre-existent tumor. The tumor exhibited two intermingled and very atypical cellular components, one undifferentiated and the other with a chondroid pattern. Immunostaining with epithelial markers in the undifferentiated area allowed to distinguish this tumor from salivary gland sarcomas.

Metastatic adenocarcinoma in the parotid gland in a horse - clinical and pathological findings.

This case report details the findings of a metastatic adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland, a rare neoplasm in horses with limited treatment options. A 12-year-old, Criollo breed, gelding was presented with an enlarged left parotid gland that had been previously treated for 6 months without response to treatment. Based on the results of the diagnostic procedures performed, the horse underwent a total sialadenectomy and died of hypovolemic shock in the recovery room. Post-mortem examination revealed metastatic neoplastic infiltration of the submandibular lymph nodes and the lymphatic network at

Malignant pleural mesothelioma metastatic to the submandibular salivary gland, simulating glandular hypertrophy, diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Malignant mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm that generally develops in the pleural or peritoneal cavity. Distant metastases are common; it rarely metastatizes to the head and neck region. CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old white man, a non-smoker, was treated with chemotherapy, surgery and radiation for a malignant pleural mesothelioma. Seven months after the last treatment, he developed a right submandibular enlargement: clinical examination, ultrasound and computerized tomography scans revealed a salivary gland hypertrophy. Anti-inflammatory and antibiotic treatment was then started

Primary small cell carcinoma of the parotid: Fine needle aspiration and immunohistochemical features of a neuroendocrine variant.

Salivary gland small cell carcinoma (SGSmCC) is extremely rare, accounting for less than 1% of salivary gland tumors. A 42-year-old female patient came to the outpatient clinic due to a mass localized in the left submandibular space and that had been growing since 3-4 months. The fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) matched with small cell carcinoma (SmCC). As no other focus was detected by computerized tomography (CT), it was accepted as a primary neoplasm of the parotid gland. The histopathological assessment of the excised material and immunohistochemical staining demonstrated a neuroendo

RECURRENT PLEOMORPHIC ADENOMA OF THE UPPER LIP: CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE.

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma or mixed tumour is a benign salivary gland tumour, presenting usually in the parotid or submandibular glands. This tumour contains elements of both epithelial and mesenchymal origin. They are the most common tumours (50%), (60-65%) of the major and minor salivary glands. The palate is considered as the most common intraoral site (42.8-68.8%), followed by the upper lip (10.1%) and cheek (5.5%). CASE REPORT: A 37 year old female Nigerian house wife was seen with a four year history of painless slowly progressive upper lip swelling. Prior to her presentation, sh

Atypical features in pleomorphic adenoma--a clinicopathologic study and implications for management.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland neoplasm and infrequently undergoes malignant transformation. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is typically an infiltrative neoplasm with features of cellular pleomorphism, high mitotic activity, peri-neural and vascular invasion. More recently, sub-groups of pleomorphic adenoma have been described exhibiting vascular invasion and features of malignancy without evidence of extra-capsular extension. There is little information in the literature regarding how these different histological variants influence clinical presentation and outcome fo

Salivary gland neoplasms in children.

We reviewed 20 children with salivary gland neoplasms treated at the National Cancer Center Hospital between 1964 and 1990. Retrospective analyses of pathological features and the clinical courses of these cases constituted the bases of the present study. The age of onset was late childhood in 19 cases, ranging from 9 to 20 years, but one patient was 1 year old. Approximately half (55%) the neoplasms were malignant. Histologically, all the benign neoplasms were pleomorphic adenomas (nine cases) and the most common malignant neoplasm was mucoepidermoid carcinoma (six cases, 55%), followed by ad

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor of major salivary glands: report of 1 case and a review of the literature.

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor is a rare malignant neoplasm mostly occurring in the vicinity of or within the peritoneal cavity, and is uncommon in the head and neck region. Tumor location within a major salivary gland is exceptional. We report a case of a 41-year-old Chinese man with a history of diabetes mellitus and end-stage renal failure on peritoneal dialysis with a desmoplastic small round cell tumor occurring in the left submandibular gland. Fine-needle aspiration cytology showed variably cohesive clusters of small cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and fine granular chromatin. On h

Metastatic Myoepithelial Carcinoma Ex Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Sublingual Salivary Gland.

Myoepithelial carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is a very rare malignant neoplasm of the salivary gland. Owing to its rarity, its clinical features and treatment are not well characterized. We describe a case of a patient who was referred to our department with a six-month history of a bulge on the right side of the floor of the mouth and a submandibular mass with progressive enlargement. The mass was resected, and an elective level I neck dissection was performed. Histological examination revealed myoepithelial carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the sublingual salivary gland. [Submandibulectomy in the treatment of pathology of the submandibular gland: our experience 1970-1995].

Submandibular gland excision is proposed in the treatment of neoplastic and non neoplastic diseases; this surgical procedure can be performed by transoral or transcervical approach. The aim of the study is to demonstrate that cervical approach must be preferred because it is safer and allows a wider exposition of the surgical field. From 1970 to June 1995, 54 patients (47 with chronic sialadenitis, 7 with benign tumors and 7 with malignant tumors) were submitted to excision of the submaxillary gland. Of the 54 resections performed, 2 were completed with "functional" cervical lymphadenectomy an

Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Submandibular Gland With Cutaneous Fistula: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of salivary glands, also referred to as epidermoid carcinoma, is a very rare neoplastic tumor. It occurs as metastasis of a cutaneous or mucosal squamous carcinoma of the head and neck or as a primary SCC. In the latter case, the most known risk factor is previous irradiation to the gland. Common clinical symptoms are represented by cervical swelling and hyposialia. The treatment is essentially surgical, most often supplemented by a radical neck dissection and postoperative radiation therapy. A 75-year-old male patient with a history of chronic smoking was consult

Surgery for Benign Salivary Neoplasms.

Salivary neoplasms are relatively infrequent entities that account for only 4% of tumors of the head and neck. Although slow-growing lesions of the preauricular area and submandibular space are often confused with sebaceous cysts, lymph nodes, or lipomas by the non-otolaryngologist, otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons recognize that all preauricular and submandibular masses should be considered a salivary neoplasm until proven otherwise. Surgery remains the treatment of choice for benign salivary gland neoplasms; however, techniques continue to evolve in order to preserve salivary functio

Maxillofacial diagnostic features of the enigmatic metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma.

Considering the confusion in the literature regarding local recurrence, spread, or metastases of pleomorphic adenoma (PA) in the head and neck region, the aim of this study was to enhance understanding of the characteristics of metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma (MPA) by reviewing the literature and presenting a case. English language articles with proof of metastases were included in the literature review. Of the 80 cases in the literature with MPA, 46 were female and 33 were male (sex missing for one case). Thirty-five percent of the neoplasms affected the bones; the maxilla was affected in f
