Dual radionuclide subtraction imaging of vertebral disc infection using an 111In-labelled leucocyte scan and a 99mTc-tin colloid scan.

Interpretation of the posterior view of an 111In-labelled leucocyte scan is difficult when infection is suspected in that region of the spine overlaid by the left lobe of the liver. A case is reported of the successful localisation of infection in this region by combining an 111In-labelled leucocyte scan with a 99mTc-tin colloid scan in a dual radionuclide subtraction technique.

Pedicle subtraction osteotomy for the treatment of fixed sagittal imbalance.

BACKGROUND: Fixed sagittal imbalance (a syndrome in which the patient is only able to stand with the weight-bearing line in front of the sacrum) has many etiologies. The most commonly reported technique for correction is the Smith-Petersen osteotomy. Few reports on pedicle subtraction procedures (resection of the posterior elements, pedicles, and vertebral body through a posterior approach) are available in the peer-reviewed literature. We are aware of no report involving a substantial number of patients with coexistent scoliosis who underwent pedicle/vertebral body subtraction for the treatme

Surgery for kyphosis.

Kyphosis is a difficult topic of spinal surgery, and its management contains many controversies. Surgical management needs consideration of different aspects of the kyphotic deformity such as neurological status, the presence of spinal cord compression, angle of the kyphosis, the quality of bone, and accompanying diseases. In case of significant cord compression and neurological compromise, anterior surgery should have the priority. However, in smooth-angled kyphosis and ankylosing spondylitis patients, deformity can easily be reduced by a posterior-only approach. Since they have no neurologic

[Subtraction scintigraphy with thallium-201 chloride and technetium-99m pertechnetate versus high resolution ultrasonography in the localization of the parathyroid glands in primary hyperparathyroidism].

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of scintigraphy with thallium-201 chloride (201 Tl) and technetium-99m pertechnetate (99mTc) in the diagnosis of the localization of the pathological parathyroid glands in primary hyperparathyroidism and compare the results with those of high resolution ultrasonography. METHODS: Twelve patients of 56.1 +/- 7.8 years of age diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism were studied between March 1987 and June 1990. High resolution ultrasonography with a 7.5 MHz transducer and scintigraphy of digital subtraction with 201Tl-99mTc were carrie

Noninvasive identification of peripheral vessels of oral and maxillofacial regions by using electrocardiography-triggered three-dimensional fast asymmetric spin-echo sequences.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the 3-dimensional images of thinner main peripheral vessels in oral and maxillofacial regions made without contrast medium by using a new technique, fresh blood imaging (FBI). A second objective was to discern arteries from veins by using the combination of FBI with the subtraction technique. STUDY DESIGN: Images from FBI were compared with those from 3-dimensional phase-contrast magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of blood vessels in 20 healthy subjects. All images were scored for visualization and image quality of the main blood vessels. In

Contrast-enhanced three-dimensional MR portography.

Three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance (MR) portography with contrast material enhancement is a fast means of evaluating the portal venous system that has some advantages over currently used modalities, such as digital subtraction angiography, helical computed tomography, ultrasonography, and nonenhanced MR angiography with time-of-flight and phase-contrast techniques. With contrast-enhanced 3D MR portography, a first-pass study of the mesenteric vasculature is performed after rapid bolus injection of gadopentetate dimeglumine; a 3D fast field echo sequence is used, which can demonstrate th

Decubitus CT Myelography for CSF-Venous Fistulas: A Procedural Approach.

Decubitus CT myelography is a reported method to identify CSF-venous fistulas in patients with spontaneous intracranial hypotension. One of the main advantages of decubitus CT myelography in detecting CSF-venous fistulas is using gravity to dependently opacify the CSF-venous fistula, which can be missed on traditional myelographic techniques. Most of the CSF-venous fistulas in the literature have been identified in patients receiving general anesthesia and digital subtraction myelography, a technique that is not performed at all institutions. In this article, we discuss the decubitus CT myelog

Intravenous digital subtraction angiography of the nearly occluded internal carotid artery.

Three patients with nearly occluded internal carotid artery origins were evaluated with intravenous digital subtraction angiography and subsequently had successful carotid endarterectomies. The angiographic features are described. Although conventional arterial angiography offers superior spatial resolution and selectivity, the thorough mixing of blood and contrast medium that occurs with the intravenous technique minimizes the tendency toward layering beyond a high-grade stenosis, which may occur with selective arterial injection. In cooperative patients, the intravenous digital technique may

Digital subtraction angiography in the diagnosis of retinal vascular disease.

Digital subtraction angiography is a safe, inexpensive method of investigating systemic vascular disease in patients for whom conventional carotid angiography is too risky. We used this technique in five patients with a variety of retinal vascular conditions--a 55-year-old woman with occlusion of the right internal carotid artery, a 63-year-old man with bilateral occlusion of the internal carotid arteries, a 72-year-old man with occlusion of the stem of the left subclavian artery and an irregularity of the proximal portion of the innominate artery, a 77-year-old man with optic nerve head neova

[Arteriovenous fistula following a gunshot wound. Qualitative and quantitative diagnosis].

A man aged 33 years developed an arterio-venous fistula following a gunshot wound from behind in the right calf. The quality of the fistula could be demonstrated employing digital subtraction angiographic technique while the quantity was demonstrated employing 99Tc macroaggregated albumin. The localization of the fistula is important in view of the surgical procedure and the haemodynamic amount is important to determine cardiac involvement.

A Modified Staged Three-Level Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomy Approach for Severe Ankylosing Spondylitis Using CT Navigation and Ultrasonic Bone Scalpel.

Pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) is a well-established technique for correcting rigid spinal deformities but remains technically demanding and carries notable risks. We describe a modified three-level PSO technique utilizing CT-guided navigation and an ultrasonic bone scalpel in a patient with severe sagittal imbalance secondary to ankylosing spondylitis. The procedure achieved satisfactory deformity correction with maintained clinical and radiographic improvement at 24 months. While further experience is needed to assess its broader applicability, this case suggests that incorporating mode

The Nuances of Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomies.

In adult spinal deformity, the pedicle subtraction osteotomy is a useful technique to provide correction, especially in rigid, previously fused spines. However, it is not without its complications. In an effort to prevent pseudoarthrosis, a new technique using 4 rods has been pioneered to decrease stress on the 2 long rods while allowing for maintenance of correction with 2 smaller rods. One should also use careful neuromonitoring, especially during closure, to be able to make adjustments in time to prevent the development of neurologic deficits. Nevertheless, significant correction can be ach

Digital subtraction high-frame-rate echocardiography in detecting delayed onset of regional left ventricular relaxation in ischemic heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Because left ventricular (LV) diastolic function is impaired before systolic function in patients with ischemic heart disease and because ischemic heart disease is constituted of regional rather than global abnormalities of the left ventricle, measures of LV regional diastolic dysfunction, if possible, should provide the most sensitive assessment of the coronary involved region. The objectives of this study are to clarify whether high-frame-rate two-dimensional echocardiography, combined with digital subtraction image processing, may be used to visualize regional LV relaxation abno

[The stenotic-occlusive anatomy and pathology of the renal arteries. Their evaluation by magnetic resonance angiography].

Magnetic resonance angiography of the renal arteries was performed in 10 healthy subjects, 10 patients with renal artery stenosis and 2 patients with accessory renal artery (1 unilateral, 1 bilateral). All patients selected among 35 subjects with suspected renovascular hypertension had previously undergone digital subtraction angiography. Four patients were studied before and after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty. MRA was performed with time-of-flight technique, with 2D and 3D FISP and 2D FLASH gradient-echo sequences. Digital subtraction angiography demonstrated stenoses ranging 40% to

Association of parathyroid adenoma and autonomous nodule of the thyroid. Diagnostic efficacy of 201thallium-99mtechnetium scintigraphy.

The thallium-technetium subtraction technique, proposed originally by Ferlin and co-workers, is now widely used to localize parathyroid adenoma. We report here the case of a hypercalcemic woman, referred to our ward with the biologically assessed diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism. Thallium-technetium subtraction scintigraphy not only successfully localized the parathyroid adenoma but also revealed the existence of an autonomous nodule of the thyroid, which was not suspected. It has previously been shown that this method can localize parathyroid adenoma in cases of cold thyroid nodule. T

[Selective blood sampling from the inferior petrosal sinus using digital subtraction angiography].

Simultaneous bilateral venous sampling of blood from the inferior petrosal sinuses helps in the differentiation between peripheral and central ACTH hypersecretion. One can also locate the site of a hormonally active hypophyseal micro-adenoma that cannot be demonstrated by other methods. The authors have experience with fifteen patients and discuss the indications, technique and problems as well as the advantages of using digital subtraction angiography.

Revision surgery after PSO failure with rod breakage: a comparison of different techniques.

STUDY DESIGN: Author experience and literature review. OBJECTIVES: To compare different revision techniques in the treatment of implant failure after pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO). The complication rate of pedicle subtraction osteotomy is substantially higher than other corrective procedures available for the treatment of spinal sagittal imbalance: in particular, hardware failures and mechanical complications affect this technique and their biomechanical explanation is still purely speculative. METHODS: The author's experience and the literature regarding the revision techniques for PS

Application of Spinal Subtraction and Bone Background Fusion CTA in the Accurate Diagnosis and Evaluation of Spinal Vascular Malformations.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Accurate pretreatment diagnosis and assessment of spinal vascular malformations using spinal CTA are crucial for patient prognosis, but the postprocessing reconstruction may not be able to fully depict the lesions due to the complexity inherent in spinal anatomy. Our purpose was to explore the application value of the spinal subtraction and bone background fusion CTA (SSBBF-CTA) technique in precisely depicting and localizing spinal vascular malformation lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients (between November 2017 and November 2022) with

Bleaching/blinking assisted localization microscopy for superresolution imaging using standard fluorescent molecules.

Superresolution imaging techniques based on the precise localization of single molecules, such as photoactivated localization microscopy (PALM) and stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM), achieve high resolution by fitting images of single fluorescent molecules with a theoretical Gaussian to localize them with a precision on the order of tens of nanometers. PALM/STORM rely on photoactivated proteins or photoswitching dyes, respectively, which makes them technically challenging. We present a simple and practical way of producing point localization-based superresolution images that
