Concentration-induced hydrogen-bonding reorganization in acetic acid-dimethyl sulfoxide mixtures.

Hydrogen bonding (HB) is a ubiquitous intermolecular interaction in nature, and its formation, strength variation, and network reorganization govern the structure, properties, and functions of matter. A comprehensive understanding of the HB behavior of polar functional groups, such as carbonyl groups, in complex solvent environments is essential for elucidating the physicochemical mechanisms underlying solution phase transitions and molecular recognition. In this work, a binary system composed of acetic acid (AA) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was investigated, and intermolecular interactions a

Theoretical modeling of the liquid-phase chlorination of 4-nitroaniline catalyzed by dimethyl sulfoxide.

The mechanism of interaction of molecular chlorine with 4-nitroaniline in the aqueous medium, leading to the production of 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline, was studied. The simulation was carried out using high-level quantum chemistry methods DFT/ωB97x-D4/aug-cc-pVTZ//DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS and the SMD solvent model, and correction of translational entropy was also applied during the transition to the liquid-phase process. It was found that the reaction proceeds through the formation of an intermediate σ-complex and its subsequent decomposition. The catalytic role of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was investiga

Electrochemical sensing of organoferrocene ligand interaction with serum albumin in dimethyl sulfoxide media.

Protein-ligand interactions are crucial for understanding biochemical reactions and pathways, as well as for the design of new therapeutics. In this work, we compare the electrochemical behavior of four neutral organoferrocene ligands that differ in the number of monosaccharide and ferrocene units. The presence of a carbohydrate moiety results in increased hydrophilicity, while ferrocene units increase hydrophobicity, which significantly influences interactions with the surface, as well as with serum albumin. The adsorption of di-ferrocene ligands on the electrode surface and to serum albumin

PEG-free Lipid Nanoparticles for mRNA Delivery: Superhydrophilic Sulfoxide Polymer Coatings.

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) are the most widely applied nanocarriers for mRNA delivery in clinical use. However, the limited stability and increasingly recognized immunogenicity of PEG-based LNP formulations are potential impediments to the more widespread development of mRNA therapeutics. To address shortcomings in current LNP polymer coatings, we have developed a polymer-lipid conjugate based on the low-fouling sulfoxide polymer poly(2-(methylsulfinyl)ethyl acrylate) (PMSEA). The results show that LNPs formed from the PMSEA-DSPE conjugates with optimized polymer chain length have excellent st

Reconsidering dimethyl sulfoxide in endovascular embolization: A potential toxic-dependent contributor to hydrocephalus?

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is widely used as a solvent in endovascular embolization procedures, yet its potential neurotoxic effects remain underexplored. In this correspondence, we highlight emerging evidence suggesting that DMSO exposure may contribute to the development of hydrocephalus through mechanisms involving ependymal damage and astrocyte apoptosis. Drawing on recent experimental findings, we propose that DMSO-induced neuroinflammation may play a role in post-embolization complications. We urge the research community to consider hydrocephalus as a possible, though unproven, outcome of

Using a triphasic model to describe the permeation of dimethyl sulfoxide in porcine corneoscleral discs.

Corneal blindness can be treated by keratoplasty but a lack of readily available corneal donor tissue for this procedure remains a challenge. Cryopreservation can facilitate the long-term storage of tissue but effective protocols for cryopreserving cornea have yet to be developed. Mathematical modelling can guide protocol design, but previously used models are not comprehensive. A comprehensive model should describe the tissue's shrink-swell response and the cryoprotectant concentration throughout the tissue during cryoprotectant loading. Such a model exists for articular cartilage based on a

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO): a solvent that may solve selected cutaneous clinical challenges.

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a clear, odorless liquid, inexpensively produced as a by-product of the wood pulp industry. DMSO's unique chemical properties allow for its broad applications in a wide variety of cutaneous challenges. Widely available in the USA as a solvent, DMSO is FDA-approved only for the treatment of interstitial cystitis and for use as a preservative for organ transplant. DMSO readily penetrates and diffuses through biological membranes. At low concentrations, DMSO exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, diuretic, vasodilator, anti-platelet aggregation, radio-protective, and

Hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effect of S-allyl-cysteine sulfoxide (alliin) in DIO mice.

Alliin (S-allyl cysteine sulfoxide) is a bioactive sulfoxide compound derived from garlic. To evaluate the preventive effect of alliin against metabolic risk factors in diet induced obese (DIO) mice, we treated the C57BL/6J DIO mice with drinking water with or without alliin (0.1 mg/ml) for 8 weeks. Results showed that alliin had no significant effect on the body weight, adiposity or energy balance. However, alliin treatment enhanced glucose homeostasis, increased insulin sensitivity and improved the lipid profile in the DIO mice. This was, at least partly, attributable to alliin induced modul

Protective effect of dimethyl sulfoxide on stricture formation in corrosive esophageal burns in rats.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on stricture formation in corrosive esophageal burns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 21 male rats were divided equally into three groups. In Group 1 (burn) and Group 2 (burn + DMSO) burns were induced in the distal esophagi with a 30% NaOH solution. In Group 3 (control), a saline solution was applied to the esophageal lumen. In Group 2, DMSO was administered intraperitoneally (3 mg/kg) 15 minutes after the burn was induced and then every 24 hours for 7 days. All rats were humanely killed at the

Comparison of dimethyl sulfoxide and water as solvents for echinocandin susceptibility testing by the EUCAST methodology.

Ninety-six strains of Candida, including 29 resistant and 67 susceptible isolates with mutations in the FKS1 and FKS2 genes were tested by the European Committee on Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing EDef 7.1 and 7.2 methodologies to determine the impact on the MIC when water was replaced with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the solvent for caspofungin and micafungin. The MICs were significantly lower and the MIC ranges were narrower when DMSO was used as the solvent. The use of DMSO may help to better discriminate between susceptible and resistant populations.

Effects of ethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide on the molecular organization of H2O as probed by 1-propanol.

We characterized the effects of ethanol (ET) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on H(2)O within a limited H(2)O-rich region by the 1-propanol (1P)-probing methodology developed by us earlier. The results are displayed on a two-dimensional map with twin coordinates: one pertaining to hydrophobicity and the other to hydrophilicity. The locus of ET on this map was at a point in between methanol (ME) and 2-propanol (2P) as expected from our earlier findings by thermodynamic studies. That for DMSO, however, was surprisingly more hydrophilic than ME. Similar to N-methyl groups discussed recently (J. Phys

Myristoylated methionine sulfoxide reductase A protects the heart from ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Methionine sulfoxide reductase A (MsrA) catalytically scavenges reactive oxygen species and also repairs oxidized methionines in proteins. Increasing MsrA protects cells and organs from a variety of oxidative stresses while decreasing MsrA enhances damage, but the mechanisms of action have not been elucidated. A single gene encodes MsrA of which ∼25% is targeted to the mitochondria, a major site of reactive oxygen species production. The other ∼75% is targeted to the cytosol and is posttranslationally modified by myristoylation. To determine the relative importance of MsrA in each compartment

Formation of methionine sulfoxide-containing specific forms of oxidized high-density lipoproteins.

Atherosclerosis is characterized by the accumulation of both lipoprotein-derived lipids and inflammatory cells in the affected vascular wall that results in a state of heightened oxidative stress and that is reflected by the accumulation of oxidized lipoproteins. Circulating oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) is used as a surrogate marker for coronary artery disease, although the 'escape' of oxLDL from the vessel wall is hindered by the large size of this lipoprotein and its specific retention by the extracellular matrix. Also, the oxidation of lipoproteins in human atherosclerotic lesio

Hepatoprotection by dimethyl sulfoxide. III. Role of inhibition of the bioactivation and covalent bonding of chloroform.

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has previously been shown to have the ability to attenuate chloroform (CHCl(3))-induced liver injury in the naive rat even when administered 24 h after the toxicant. These studies were undertaken to determine if the protective action by late administration of DMSO is due to an inhibition of the bioactivation of CHCl(3). This was done by comparing the cytochrome P450 inhibitors, diallyl sulfide (DAS), and aminobenzotriazole (ABT) to DMSO for their protective efficacy when administered 24 h after CHCl(3) exposure. In addition, (14)CHCl(3) was utilized to measure the eff

Implication of tyrosine kinases and protein kinase C in dimethyl sulfoxide-induced apoptosis.

We have previously shown that the chemical agent of myeloid differentiation, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), causes apoptosis in human leukemic U937 cells (Château et al. Anal. Cell. Pathol. 1996;10:75-84). Activation of protein kinase C (PKC) by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) led to inhibition of the DMSO-induced apoptosis, suggesting that PKC helps regulate this mechanism by preventing cell death. However, specific inhibitors of PKC (bisindolylmaleimide, D sphingosine), neither triggered apoptosis themselves, nor affected the DMSO-induced apoptosis. Surprisingly, herbimycin A, a potent inh

Antiperoxide effect of S-allyl cysteine sulfoxide, an insulin secretagogue, in diabetic rats.

Treatment of alloxan diabetic rats with the antioxidant S-allyl cysteine sulfoxide (SACS) isolated from garlic (Allium sativum Linn), ameliorated the diabetic condition almost to the same extent as did glibenclamide and insulin. In addition, SACS controlled lipid peroxidation better than the other two drugs. Furthermore, SACS significantly stimulated in vitro insulin secretion from B cells isolated from normal rats. Hence it can be surmised that the beneficial effects of SACS could be due to both its antioxidant and its secretagogue actions. The former effect is more predominant and the latter

[Prevention of radiation damage to the bladder and rectum using local application of dimethyl sulfoxide].

A method for the prevention of radiation injuries of the urinary bladder and rectum for cervical cancer patients was worked out. It was based on the local application of the radioprotective agent dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) before a session of interstitial irradiation with the AGAT-B apparatus. Concomitant radiation therapy with DMSO was provided to 22 cervical cancer patients. The control group included 59 patients who received similar treatment without DMSO. The expression of early reactions and late injuries of the rectum and urinary bladder were significantly lower in the DMSO group. A radiop

Dimethyl sulfoxide affects colony morphology on agar and alters distribution of glycosaminoglycans and fibronectin.

We have found striking changes in the morphology of colonies of Chinese hamster ovary cells grown on agar containing low doses of dimethyl sulfoxide. Effects on morphology of cells grown on plastic at the same dimethyl sulfoxide concentrations were not as pronounced. Computer-assisted analysis of darkfield photographs of growing colonies proved very useful in measuring the magnitude of morphological changes at various doses. A large decrease in total cell-bound and released glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) was observed in the presence of dimethyl sulfoxide by measuring incorporation of radiolabeled p
