Evaluation of ferric oxide and ferric citrate for their effects on fermentation, production of sulfide and methane, and abundance of select microbial populations using in vitro rumen cultures.

This study systematically evaluated the effect of ferric iron on sulfate reduction to sulfide, feed digestion and fermentation, methane production, and populations of select ruminal microbes using in vitro rumen cultures. Ferric oxide (Fe2O3) and ferric citrate (C6H5FeO7) at six concentrations (0, 25, 50, 100, 150, and 200mg/L as Fe(3+)) were tested. Ferric iron decreased production of both H2S gas in culture headspace (up to 71.9%) and aqueous sulfide (up to 80.8%), without adversely affecting other fermentation parameters, with ferric citrate being more effective than ferric oxide. Total arc

Autotrophic denitrification by sulfur-based immobilized electron donor for enhanced nitrogen removal: Denitrification performance, microbial interspecific interaction and functional traits.

Sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SdAD) is a promising nitrogen removing process, but its applications were generally constrained by conventional electron donors (i.e., thiosulfate (Na2S2O3)) with high valence and limited bioavailability. Herein, an immobilized electron donor by loading elemental sulfur on the surface of polyurethane foam (PFSF) was developed, and its feasibility for SdAD was investigated. The denitrification efficiency of PFSF was 97.3%, higher than that of Na2S2O3 (91.1%). Functional microorganisms (i.e., Thiobacillus and Sulfurimonas) and their metabolic activities

Using Thermodynamics to Predict the Outcomes of Nitrate-Based Oil Reservoir Souring Control Interventions.

Souring is the undesirable production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in oil reservoirs by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Souring is a common problem during secondary oil recovery via water flooding, especially when seawater with its high sulfate concentration is introduced. Nitrate injection into these oil reservoirs can prevent and remediate souring by stimulating nitrate-reducing bacteria (NRB). Two conceptually different mechanisms for NRB-facilitated souring control have been proposed: nitrate-sulfate competition for electron donors (oil-derived organics or H2) and nitrate driven sulfide oxid

Sulfate-mediated Fe(III) mineral reduction accelerates arsenic mobilization by a Desulfovibrio strain isolated from paddy soil.

The biogeochemical cycling of arsenic (As) is often intertwined with iron (Fe) and sulfur (S) cycles, wherein Fe(III)- and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) play a crucial role. Here, we isolated strain DS-1, a strictly anaerobic Fe(III)- and sulfate-reducing bacterium, from As-contaminated paddy soil. Using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain DS-1 was identified as a member of the genus Desulfovibrio. Strain DS-1 utilized energy derived from ferrihydrite reduction to support its cellular growth. Under anoxic sulfate-reducing conditions, the presence of strain DS-1 significantly increased As

Biogas-derived sulfur enhances microbial sulfuric acid production.

Sulfuric acid is one of the most widely used industrial chemicals, yet its conventional production depends on purified sulfur, chemical catalysts, and energy-intensive processes. In contrast, sulfur-oxidizing bacteria can convert reduced inorganic sulfur compounds into sulfuric acid under mild conditions. To optimize biological sulfuric acid production, six Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans strains were first studied on chemical sulfur, with strain DSM 14887 showing the highest sulfur-oxidation activity. This strain, along with intermediate- and low-performing strains, were then investigated on bi

Metabolic trade-offs in Desulfosporosus meridiei: dose-dependent FeS nanoparticles modulate extracellular electron transfer and gene expression for mineral transformation.

Biogenic ferrous sulfide nanoparticles (FeS NPs) regulate sulfate (SO42-)-reducing bacteria (SRB)-driven iron/sulfur cycling in SO42--rich anaerobic environments, yet their dose-dependent impacts on SRB metabolism remain unclear. This study revealed how FeS NPs dose modulates Desulfosporosus meridiei (a model SRB) in reducing schwertmannite (Sch). SRB preferentially reduced Fe(III) over SO42- in Sch via FeS NPs-mediated extracellular electron transfer (EET). At low FeS doses (0-6 mM), the dsr gene expression (sulfur metabolism) associated with mineral transformation increased despite a decline

Sulfur-carbon loop enhanced efficient nitrogen removal mechanism from iron sulfide-mediated mixotrophic partial denitrification/anammox systems.

This study successfully established Iron Sulfide-Mediated mixotrophic Partial Denitrification/Anammox system, achieving nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency of 97.26% and 78.12%, respectively, with COD/NO3--N of 1.00. Isotopic experiments and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy analysis confirmed that iron sulfide enhanced autotrophic Partial Denitrification performance. Meanwhile, various sulfur valence states functioned as electron buffers, reinforcing nitrogen and sulfur cycles. Microbial community analysis indicated reduced heterotrophic denitrifiers (OLB8, OLB13) under lower COD/NO3--N

Effects of engineering injection and supplement mode of in-situ biogeochemical transformation enhancement EVO-FeSO4 on the remediation of tetrachloroethylene contaminated aquifer.

Traditional in situ biogeochemical transformation suffers from competition among crucial microorganisms and inadequate formation of reactive minerals, thus leading to the accumulation of toxic intermediates. In this study, three regulation schemes were proposed to solve these problems from the perspective of engineering mode. Results showed intermittent injection mode effectively reduced the accumulation of toxic intermediates but the reduction rate of tetrachloroethylene was decreased. And periodical supplementation of carbon and sulfur sources accelerated the removal of tetrachloroethylene b

Suppression of mercury methylation in soil and methylmercury accumulation in rice by dissolved organic matter derived from sulfur-rich rape straw.

Straw amendment significantly enhances mercury (Hg) methylation and subsequent methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation in Hg-contaminated paddy fields by releasing dissolved organic matter (DOM). This study comprehensively investigates the regulatory mechanisms of DOM and its different molecular weights derived from sulfur-rich rape straw (RaDOM) and composted rape straw (CRaDOM) applied in the rice-filling stage on soil MeHg production and subsequent bioaccumulation in rice grains. The results indicated that the amendment of RaDOM and CRaDOM significantly reduced soil MeHg content by 42.40-62.42

Effects of French Pine Bark Extract Chewing Gum on Oral Malodor and Salivary Bacteria.

Frequent or persistent malodor (halitosis) represents a considerable embarrassment to those affected. French pine bark extract, Pycnogenol® (PYC), has displayed antibacterial activity against a broad range of bacterial species. In the present study, anticipated benefits of PYC on diminishing halitosis were investigated. Ten healthy males and 11 females, aged 40.1±12.3 y, were recruited based on threshold breath sulfur compounds presence, diagnosed by portable gas chromatography. Subjects were randomly assigned to either sugar-free gums, or gums bearing an additional 2.5 mg PYC per piece. The s

Effect of essential oils on oral halitosis treatment: a review.

Halitosis is a very common condition which may affect up to 30% of the population. In about 90% of the cases, halitosis originates in the mouth due to inadequate plaque control, periodontal disease, dry mouth, faulty restorations, and in particular due to excessive bacterial growth. Oral malodor is mainly caused by a microbial degradation of amino acids into volatile, bad-smelling gases (volatile sulfur compounds - VSCs). Management of oral malodor is directed primarily at managing and reducing the VSC-producing bacteria count as well as masking the odor. Essential oils have been used for this

Reactive Sulfur Species Interact with Other Signal Molecules in Root Nodule Symbiosis in Lotus japonicus.

Reactive sulfur species (RSS) function as strong antioxidants and are involved in various biological responses in animals and bacteria. Few studies; however, have examined RSS in plants. In the present study, we clarified that RSS are involved in root nodule symbiosis in the model legume Lotus japonicus. Polysulfides, a type of RSS, were detected in the roots by using a sulfane sulfur-specific fluorescent probe, SSP4. Supplying the sulfane sulfur donor Na2S3 to the roots increased the amounts of both polysulfides and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the roots and simultaneously decreased the amounts

Mechanistic insights into sulfate-driven performance adaptation and membrane fouling in a UASB-SBR-AXMBR system: metabolic network reconstruction and microbial community succession.

Sulfate-rich wastewater poses considerable challenges to the operational stability of biological treatment systems. This study investigated the long-term (294 days) response of a combined UASB-SBR-AXMBR process to stepwise increases in sulfate concentration from 100 to 2000 mg/L. The system maintained stable carbon and nitrogen removal performance under sulfate stress, with COD removal exceeding 90.3% and total nitrogen removal stabilizing at 85.5% via a partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) pathway. However, high sulfate loading significantly intensified membrane fouling, with the primary drivin

Revealing an unrecognized role of free ammonia in sulfur transformation during sludge anaerobic treatment.

Free ammonia (FA), the unionized form of ammonium, is presented in anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) at high levels. However, its potential role in sulfur transformation, especially H2S production, during WAS anaerobic fermentation process was unrecognized previously. This work aims to unveil how FA affects anaerobic sulfur transformation in WAS anaerobic fermentation. It was found that FA significantly inhibited H2S production. With an increase of FA from 0.04 to 159 mg/L, H2S production reduced by 69.9%. FA firstly attacked tyrosine-like proteins and aromatic-like protei

A highly efficient process to enhance the bioleaching of spent lithium-ion batteries by bifunctional pyrite combined with elemental sulfur.

Bioleaching technologies have been shown to be an environmentally friendly and economically beneficial tool for extracting metals from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, conventional bioleaching methods have exhibited low efficiency in recovering metals from spent LIBs. Therefore, relied on the sustainability principle of using waste to treat waste, this study employed pyrite (FeS2) as an energy substance with reducing properties and investigated its effects in combination with elemental sulfur (S0) or FeSO4 on metals bioleaching from spent LIBs. Results demonstrated that the bioleac

Chlorobaculum tepidum outer membrane vesicles may transport biogenic elemental sulfur.

Outer membrane-derived vesicles (OMVs) have been studied in different phyla of gram-negative bacteria, most extensively in the Pseudomonadota, where they have been shown to participate in diverse biological and environmental processes. To date, the production of OMVs has not been reported in the Chlorobiaceae within the phylum Chlorobiota. Chlorobaculum tepidum is the model organism for the Chlorobiaceae that synthesizes and consumes insoluble extracellular sulfur (S(0)) globules by an unknown mechanism. Here, we report evidence implicating outer membrane vesicles in biogenic S(0) globule synt

Effect of iron-based materials on sulfide control in sewer systems.

H2S causes severe corrosion damage to infrastructure and concrete structures in sewers. In this study, FeOOH, Fe3O4, Fe2O3 and Fe+C were proposed to control H2S, and the effects of iron species on sulfur metabolizing bacteria, related genes and enzymes were investigated in sewers. The results showed microbes in sewers enhanced S2- removal capacity of iron-based materials up to 17.92-fold. Iron-based materials inhibited SO42- reduction, promoted COD decomposition, and supplied alkalinity downstream. The S2- control performances were 405.14, 283.97, 107.22 and 68.59 mg S/g Fe for FeOOH, Fe2O3, F

Kinetics of sulfate reduction and sulfide precipitation rates in sediments of a bar-built estuary (Pescadero, California).

The bar-built Pescadero Estuary in Northern California is a major fish rearing habitat, though recently threatened by near-annual fish kill events, which occur when the estuary transitions from closed to open state. The direct and indirect effects of hydrogen sulfide are suspected to play a role in these mortalities, but the spatial variability of hydrogen sulfide production and its link to fish kills remains poorly understood. Using flow-through reactors containing intact littoral sediment slices, we measured potential sulfate reduction rates, kinetic parameters of microbial sulfate reduction

Differences between the fecal microbiota of coeliac infants and healthy controls.

Coeliac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy with a multifactorial aetiology, characterized by chronic inflammation of the small intestinal mucosa. Although evidence suggests that the gut microbiota contributes to other chronic inflammatory disorders, its possible role in CD has not been determined. In this study, the composition of the fecal microbiota of coeliac children and age-matched controls was investigated by culture-dependent and -independent methodologies, using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). The levels of Bacteroides, Clostridium and Staphylococcus were signific

Inorganic sulfate is critical for Mycobacterium tuberculosis lung tissue colonization and redox balance.

Tuberculosis remains the deadliest infectious disease caused by a single pathogen, highlighting the urgent need for novel therapies. A deeper understanding of Mycobacterium tuberculosis metabolism could uncover specific vulnerabilities and inform the development of new treatments. Sulfur, essential for bacterial growth and survival, fuels key pathways including redox buffering and coenzyme production. Although previous studies suggest that M. tuberculosis utilizes various substrates to meet its sulfur requirements, the primary sources of sulfur exploited during in vivo infection remain unclear
