Functional reconstruction of elbow flexion with latissimus dorsi muscle rotational transfer: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: We report two cases of biceps brachii and brachialis paralysis due to musculocutaneous nerve injury in which elbow joint flexion was reconstructed using rotational transfer of the latissimus dorsi muscle with sutures to the radial and ulnar tuberosities, thereby enabling flexion by simultaneous activation of the humeroradial and humeroulnar joints. In cases of associated brachialis paralysis, weaker flexion strength can be expected when the forearm is in a pronated position than when it is in a supinated state. To the best of our knowledge, no previous study has reported the rotati

Soft tissue Reconstruction Using Pedicled Trapezius Musculocutaneous Flap for Cranial Bone Flap Infection in the Occipital Region.

When managing cranial bone flap infections, infected bone flaps are typically removed and subsequently replaced with artificial bones 6 to 12 months after the inflammation subsides. However, defects in the occipital region pose challenges due to concerns regarding brain protection when patients lie in the supine position. Herein, the authors report the case of a 73-year-old woman with an occipital bone flap infection, which was successfully managed by reconstruction with a trapezius musculocutaneous flap immediately after removing the infected bone flap. One year and 2 months postoperatively,

Editorial Commentary: Predictors of Best Outcomes After Latissimus Dorsi Transfer for Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tear.

The management of patients with massive posterosuperior rotator cuff tears without glenohumeral arthritis remains a challenge to arthroscopic surgeons. A wide variety of treatment options have been described, including latissimus dorsi tendon transfer (LDTT) and lower trapezius tendon transfer. These tendon transfers have been utilized to rebalance the glenohumeral force couple for patients with massive or irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears. Proponents of the latissimus dorsi tendon transfer have touted several theoretical advantages, including improvement of the shoulder fulcrum,

Successful Elbow Flexion Reconstruction Using Latissimus Dorsi Muscle Transfer Following a Road Traffic Accident and Upper Limb Trauma.

BACKGROUND Several surgical procedures to restore elbow flexion have been reported in the literature. Multiple factors direct the selection of appropriate procedures for each patient, including hand dominance, neurovascular injury, and comorbidities. Traumatic damage to the anterior compartment of the arm is an indication for latissimus dorsi transfer, which can restore elbow flexion. Bipolar pedicled latissimus dorsi (LD) flap is a design used very rarely to simultaneously reconstruct biceps brachii soft-tissue defects and regain complete flexion function. We report the case of a 30-year-old

Decreased amplitude of surface electromyo- graphic recordings of muscle activation along the posterior myofascial kinematic chain in subjects with chronic nonspecific low back pain compared to healthy subjects.

BACKGROUND: The concept of myofascial continuity suggests that muscles activate along kinematic chains with common fascial coverings. Yet, the literature lacks evidence in regards to the function of anatomical chains in populations suffering from low back pain (LBP). OBJECTIVE: To examine muscle activations along the superficial back line in LBP patients compared to healthy controls. METHODS: The sample study included 20 males with chronic LBP (mean age 28.7 (± 3.05) years, mean BMI 24.91 (± 2.76)) and 17 healthy controls (mean age 31.06 (± 7.76) years, mean BMI 23.46 (± 3.43)). Superficial lumbar muscle recruitment strategies to control the trunk with delayed-onset muscle soreness.

PURPOSE: The lumbar region offers various muscle recruitment strategies to achieve a task goal under varying conditions. For instance, trunk movement control can be reorganized under the influence of low back pain. How such task-modulation is obtained is not fully understood. The objective of this study was to characterize superficial lumbar muscle recruitment strategies under the influence of delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) during unexpected trunk perturbations. METHODS: Healthy participants experienced a series of 15 sudden external perturbations with and without the influence of low b

Methylation of Estrogen Receptor 1 Gene in the Paraspinal Muscles of Girls with Idiopathic Scoliosis and Its Association with Disease Severity.

Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is a multifactorial disease with epigenetic modifications. Tissue dependent and differentially methylated regions (T-DMRs) may regulate tissue-specific expression of the estrogen receptor 1 gene (ESR1). This study aimed to analyze methylation levels within T-DMR1 and T-DMR2 and its concatenation with ESR1 expression of IS patients. The study involved 87 tissue samples (deep paravertebral muscles, both on the convex and the concave side of the curve, and from back superficial muscles) from 29 girls who underwent an operation due to IS. Patient subgroups were analyzed a
