Subcortical afferent and efferent connections of the superior colliculus in the rat and comparisons between albino and pigmented strains.

Subcortical connections of the superior colliculus were investigated in albino and pigmented rats using retrograde and anterograde tracing with horseradish peroxidase (HRP), following unilateral injection of HRP into the superior colliculus. Afferents project bilaterally from the parabigeminal nuclei, the nucleus of the optic tract, the posterior pretectal region, the dorsal part of the lateral posterior-pulvinar complex and the ventral nucleus of the lateral lemniscus; and ipsilaterally from the substantia nigra pars reticulata, the pars lateralis of the ventral lateral geniculate nucleus, th

Ganglion cell death during development of ipsilateral retino-collicular projection in golden hamster.

In rats and hamsters all parts of the superior colliculus (SC) receive a topographically organized projection from the retina of the contralateral eye, and the rostral part also has a direct input from the lower temporal crescent of the ipsilateral retina, which views the central, binocular portion of the visual field. Initially the uncrossed projection covers the entire SC, but over the first 2 weeks of postnatal life it becomes progressively restricted to its adult distribution. However, if the opposite eye is removed at birth there is a persistent widespread uncrossed projection to the SC.

Retrograde and anterograde-transneuronal degeneration in the parabigeminal nucleus following tectal lesions in developing rats.

Degenerative effects in the parabigeminal nucleus were studied in adult rats that had received lesions of the superior colliculus at different postnatal ages. Unilateral lesions lead to complete degeneration of the dorsal and ventral divisions of the parabigeminal nucleus, which connect reciprocally with the damaged tectum, and produce effects on the middle division which receives afferents from the ipsilateral and projects to the contralateral tectum. On the side contralateral to the lesion there was a reduction in the cross-sectional area of the division as a consequence of retrograde degene

The orientation of the visuotectal map in Xenopus: developmental aspects.

Rotations and translocations of the eye anlage were performed in Xenopus embryos of stages ranging from 21/22 to 30. Some of the operations involved grafting wild-type eye anlagen into albino host orbits. Operations were performed under a variety of operating media and conditions. In later larval life, or after metamorphosis, the visuotectal maps from the operated eyes were recorded electrophysiologically. Results fell into two classes. In the majority, the orientation of the visuotopic map corresponded to the orientation of the eye at the time of recording. In the minority the visuotopic maps

Development of the rat's uncrossed retinotectal pathway and its relation to plasticity studies.

In the normal newborn rat the retinotectal pathway from each eye distributes across the whole area of both the ipsilateral and contralateral superior colliculus. Most of the ipsilateral projection retracts during the first ten postnatal days to produce the normal adult pattern, but retraction fails to occur if one eye is removed at birth.

[Comparative-quantitative investigations of brains of wild and laboratory rats].

By means of serial sections at equal intervals through the brains of 8 Norway rats and 8 laboratory rats the fresh volume sizes of the optic regions lateral geniculate nucleus (pars dorsalis), striate area, superior colliculus and tractus opticus were determined. Furthermore the sizes of neocortical white matter and grey matter were measured in the same way. On the basis of the intraspecific allometric relation between brain size and body size differences in size of the structures between wild and domestic animals could be established. Especially the subcortical terminal regions of visual inpu

Central acoustic tract in an echolocating bat: an extralemniscal auditory pathway to the thalamus.

To determine the sources and targets of auditory pathways that bypass the inferior colliculus in the mustache bat, we injected WGA-HRP in the medial geniculate body and related auditory nuclei of the thalamus as well as in the lower brainstem. We used electrophysiological methods to verify that the injection electrode was in an area responsive to sound. The only thalamic injections that produced retrograde transport to cells in auditory nuclei caudal to the inferior colliculus were those that included the suprageniculate nucleus. These injections labeled a group of large multipolar cells lying

MR imaging of the excised human brainstem: a correlative neuroanatomic study.

The purpose of this study was to examine an excised human brainstem with high-resolution MR imaging. The MR images were correlated with myelin-stained histologic specimens and standard anatomic descriptions. Structures visualized included nuclei and/or fibers of all the cranial nerves, with the exception of the trochlear nerve. The topography of the brainstem is discussed. Major tracts such as the corticospinal spinothalamic, spinocerebellar, medial and lateral lemniscus, and other ascending and descending tracts and intrinsic brainstem nuclei such as the olivary complex, pontine nuclei, red n

Nothnagel Syndrome.

The internist Hermann Nothnagel (1841-1905) took a special interest in the cerebellum. In an early experimental study on rabbits conducted in 1876, he demonstrated the involvement of the vermis in the pathophysiology of motor ataxia. Between 1879 and 1889, he reported four cases of tectal tumors that clinically manifested with bilateral ophthalmoplegia and unilateral gait ataxia, culminating in the Cerebellar Classic highlighted here. Nothnagel attributed this clinical syndrome to lesions of the colliculi ("quadrigeminal bodies") and compression of the nuclei of the third cranial nerves, but a

[Changes of auditory brainstem response and auditory cortex response after exposure to intensive noise].

Auditory brainstem response and auditory cortex response were recorded repeatedly in 35 guinea pigs after exposure to intensive white noise (125 dB, 150 min.) for 62 d. the amplitude of evoked potential of acoustic nerve was decreased by 29% (P < 0.05), of the cochlear nuclei by 28% (P < 0.05). However, the amplitude of response of superior olives nuclei was increased by 21% (P < 0.05), of the inferior colliculi by 37% (P < 0.05), of the cortical evoked response by 131% (P < 0.001). The results indicate that the amplitudes of auditory evoked potential showed a centripital augmentation after ex

Serotonin-sensitive adenylate cyclase activity of immature rat brain.

Cell-free preparations from superior and inferior colliculi of very young rats (1-3 days old) contained adenylate cyclase systems which were highly responsive to serotonin. The response to serotonin declined markedly during early development and was very low at maturity. Adenylate cyclase activity in the 10,000 times g particulate fraction from colliculi of newborn rats was significantly stimulated by 0.05 muM serotonin. Half-maximal activation was produced with less than 1 muM serotonin. Maximal stimulation of collicular adenylate cyclase was about 80% above basal enzyme activity and occurred

Neocortical projections of the suprageniculate and posterior thalamic nuclei in the marsupial brush-tailed possum, Trichosurus vulpecula (Phalangeridae), with a comparative commentary on the organization of the posterior thalamus in marsupial and placental mammals.

Axonal transport methods were used to determine the extent and organisation of neocortical projections from the suprageniculate (SG) and posterior (PO) thalamic nuclei in the brush-tailed possum. Our findings show that SG projects extensively to the auditory cortex, overlapping the cortical projection field of the medial geniculate nucleus, and to the immediately neighbouring association cortex. Though the input relationships of SG appear similar to those reported for other mammals, placental and marsupial, a strong SG projection to auditory cortex has not been reported previously. Neocortical

Evaluation of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and axonal transport 1 and 2 weeks after 8 hours of acute intraocular pressure elevation in rats.

PURPOSE: To compare in vivo retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) and axonal transport at 1 and 2 weeks after an 8-hour acute IOP elevation in rats. METHODS: Forty-seven adult male Brown Norway rats were used. Procedures were performed under anesthesia. The IOP was manometrically elevated to 50 mm Hg or held at 15 mm Hg (sham) for 8 hours unilaterally. The RNFLT was measured by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Anterograde and retrograde axonal transport was assessed from confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy imaging 24 hours after bilateral injections of 2 μL 1% cholera to

Gayet-Wernicke Syndrome: The eye surgeon in a French neurologic eponym.

Gayet-Wernicke syndrome is an eponym mainly used in France. In this article, we revisit Charles Gayet's (1833-1904) speciality and his patient example that gave rise to the eponym. Charles Gayet attributed the anatomical lesions to inflammation. However, they were mainly due to hemorrhage, as Wernicke's term "polioencéphalite supérieure aiguë hémorragique" (polio-encephalitis superior haemorrhagica) explicitly indicates. The pathology of Gayet's case did not involve the mamillary bodies, colliculi, or cerebellum. Gayet did not mention abnormal memory functions, which are also cardinal signs of

Transcollicular approach to intrinsic tectal lesions.

OBJECTIVE: We used a paramedian, infratentorial-supracerebellar, transcollicular approach to resect 11 intrinsic tectal lesions, including 8 tumors and 3 hematomas, in 11 patients. The route of access to the lesions was designed to minimize the anatomic and functional damage to the surrounding structures. METHODS: Access was through one superior colliculus in each of seven patients, through one inferior colliculus in each of two patients, and through the superior and inferior colliculi of one side in each of two patients. RESULTS: Of the eight tumors, three were totally resected, four were n

Functional Diversity of Mouse dLGN Neurons and Modulation of Their Encoding Properties by Superior Colliculus.

BACKGROUND: The dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) exhibits remarkable functional diversity, yet a systematic classification of its neuronal properties and the subcortical mechanisms that modulate these representations remains to be fully elucidated. METHODS: In this study, we performed a comprehensive functional mapping of the mouse dLGN using a diverse battery of visual stimuli. Neurons were grouped into clusters using unsupervised clustering of multi-dimensional response features, and the superior colliculus (SC) was pharmacologically silenced to assess its modulatory role. RESULTS:

Subcortical Foundations of Binocular Vision: Circuits and Computation from Retina to Cortex and Back.

Binocular integration is a well-established feature of neuronal processing in the primary visual cortex, where such integration is thought to first emerge. However, accumulating evidence demonstrates that subcortical retinorecipient nuclei possess sophisticated binocular processing capabilities, with important implications for cortical function, visual behavior, and non-imaging-forming physiology. This review synthesizes our current understanding of the circuit origins and functional relevance of binocular integration and modulation in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, superior colliculus

Evolutionarily old brainstem neurons are required for the control of selective spatial attention.

To behave adaptively in complex environments, animals must selectively process the most important information in space while ignoring distractors. Here, we report that an evolutionarily ancient group of brainstem inhibitory neurons, called PLTi, is surprisingly critical for this function of selective spatial attention. In freely behaving mice performing a human-like spatial attention task, we found that bilateral silencing of PLTi severely disrupted target selection without causing perceptual or task-relevant motor impairments. PLTi's effects depended necessarily on goal-relevant, rather than

Do eye movements in REM sleep play a role in overnight emotional processing?

Eye movements (EMs) are a defining feature of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, yet we are still not clear why they happen. A few hypotheses attempt to explain the possible underlying mechanisms. However, a clear understanding of their functional significance remains lacking. Interestingly, there is an EM component in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, that is approved for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The developer of EMDR, Francine Shapiro described the technique as mimicry of REM. Robert Stickgold built on this by proposing a putative neurobiological model

Decoupling of visual feature selectivity in the retinocollicular pathway.

The retina is composed of discrete functional cell types that are also characterized by distinct morphology and gene expression. It remains, however, unclear whether similar discrete functional cell types exist in the visual regions downstream of the retina. Here, we used two-photon calcium imaging to investigate the response-space structure in the retina and in the superficial layers of the mouse superior colliculus (SC), a major retinorecipient area. We found that although retinal ganglion cells showed a clear dependence between responses to luminance and motion, responses to the two stimuli
