Surface markers and functional properties of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cells in relation to histology.

Cells from 32 adult patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were studied with respect to surface markers and functional properties in short-term culture. Twenty-six lymphomas were of B-cell origin, including all nodular and diffuse lymphocytic lymphomas. Three tumors were of T-cell origin (one histiocytic lymphoma and two undifferentiated lymphomas). In the remaining three cases (histiocytic lymphomas) the immunological nature of the tumor cells could not be determined. All reactivity to mitogenic stimuli of cells from B-cell lymphomas was due to residual normal T cells. In follicular lymphocytic

[Effect of several surface-active substances on the biological and mechanical properties of a catalase monolayer].

It is found out that surface pressure of catalase monolayers increases when some medicinal surface-active agents are added to its substrate, while its enzymic activity decreases depending on the increase of surface activity of the medicinal substance. Catalase monolayer viscosity grows with a decrease in the area. The viscosity decreases with a rise in the dimedrol concentration in the substrate. The same is recorded for the shear module. As to the shear stress characterizing the strength of the monolayers it decreases with the addition of medicinal substances. This change in rheological prope

Synthesis, surface activities, aggregation properties and oil washing performances of novel cardanol-based surfactants.

A mixed cardanol sulfonate surfactant (MYBS) of disubstituted styrene unsaturated cardanol sulfonate (2,4-YBS) and monosubstituted styrene unsaturated cardanol sulfonate (2-YBS) was synthesized by optimizing the optimal synthesis conditions of the three-step reaction of alkylation, sulfonation and neutralization. The molar percentages of the two are about 70%: 30%. Its structure was characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy. At 25 °C, the surface tension of MYBS at critical micelle concentration (γCMC) and critical micelle concentration (CMC) was 33.32 mN/

How does thermocycling affect the surface properties of ion-releasing bulk‑fill resin composites?

This in vitro study evaluated the effect of thermocycling on the surface properties of ion-releasing and non-ion-releasing bulk-fill resin composites. Disc-shaped samples were fabricated from three commonly used ion-releasing resin composites and one non-ion-releasing control (Filtek Bulk). The baseline readings were recorded for one-third of randomly selected samples, whereas the rest underwent thermocycling (5000 and 10,000 cycles between 5 and 55°C, 30 s dwell time, 10 s transfer). Surface morphology, topography, nanoindentation, contact angle, pH, and color changes were evaluated. Data wer

Improving the Bioactivity and Antibiofilm Properties of Metallic Implant Materials via Controlled Surface Microdeformation.

Although metallic implants provide most of the required properties for bone-related applications, especially orthopedic implants, insufficient osseointegration, which may lead to loosening of the implant or prolonged healing time, is still an issue to be resolved. Osseointegration can be improved via application of various surface treatments on the metal surface. The current study focuses on a novel surface microdeformation method, which enables the formation of controlled surface patterns of various parameters. With this purpose, a surface microdeformation procedure was applied on 316L stainl

Immunomodulatory Biomaterials: Tailoring Surface Properties to Mitigate Foreign Body Reaction and Enhance Tissue Regeneration.

The immune cells have demonstrated the ability to promote tissue repair by removing debris, breaking down the extracellular matrix, and regulating cytokine secretion profile. If the behavior of immune cells is not well directed, chronic inflammation and foreign body reaction (FBR) will lead to scar formation and loss of biomaterial functionality. The immunologic response toward tissue repair or chronic inflammation after injury and implantation can be modulated by manipulating the surface properties of biomaterials. Tailoring surface properties of biomaterials enables the regulation of immune

Continuous leaching modifies the surface properties and metal(loid) sorption of sludge-derived biochar.

After the application of sludge derived biochar (SDBC) for soil stabilization, it is subjected to continuous leaching that may change its surface properties and metal(loid) immobilization performance. This study simulated the continuous leaching through the fresh SDBC sample in columns with unsaturated and saturated zones under flushing with 0.01M NaNO3 solution (pH5.5) and acidic solution (pH adjusted to 3.2 by HNO3:H2SO4=1:2), respectively. The resultant changes were assessed in terms of the SDBC surface characteristics and metal(loid) sorption capacities. Continuous leaching was found to gr

Wettability, surface microstructure and mechanical properties of films based on phosphorus oxychloride-treated zein.

BACKGROUND: Zein, the predominant protein in corn, has been extensively studied as an alternative packaging material in edible and biodegradable films. However, films made from 100% zein are brittle under normal conditions. The aim of this investigation was to improve the film-forming properties of zein by chemical phosphorylation. The surface hydrophobicity, surface microstructure and mechanical properties of films based on untreated and phosphorus oxychloride (POCl(3))-treated zein were evaluated and compared. The effect of POCl(3) treatment on the rheological properties of zein solutions wa

Interaction of phosphatidylserine-phosphatidylcholine liposomes with sickle erythrocytes. Evidence for altered membrane surface properties.

The sickle erythrocyte (RBC) is a pathologic RBC that contains multiple membrane abnormalities. Some of these abnormalities have been implicated in the pathophysiology of vasoocclusive crises characteristic of sickle cell disease; others have yet to be defined in terms of their clinical significance. Recent information has shown that sickle RBC adhere abnormally to cultured endothelial cells yet little is known about the ways in which sickle cells interact with model membranes of defined size and lipid composition. We investigated this phenomenon by interacting sickle RBC with artificial lipid

Regulating the silica shell thickness of magnetic nanoparticles to enhance surface fluorescence enhancement properties.

Surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technologies are widely used in high-sensitivity detection but are limited by the susceptibility of noble metal nanoparticles to oxidation and agglomeration, as well as fluorescence quenching. In this paper, Fe3O4@SiO2@Ag@SiO2 core-shell magnetic nanoparticles with tunable outer SiO2 thickness were synthesized by adjusting the dosage of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Fe3O4 endows them with superparamagnetic, Ag NPs enhances signals via the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, and the SiO2 shell inh

Investigating Surface Free Energy, Thermal Properties, and Protein Adsorption of 3D-Printed PAEK Polymers.

While polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is often considered the standard non-metal alternative for orthopedic implants, it is also just one member of a larger family of polyaryletherketones (PAEKs) that have not been as thoroughly studied for biomedical applications. This work aims to evaluate the surface properties of two medical-grade PEEKs (Types 1 and 2), two grades of polyetherketoneketone (PEKK A and C), and one low-melt PAEK, and to understand how these results correlate with protein adsorption. The surface free energy (SFE) of additively manufactured PAEK samples was measured using the Owens

Visual Perception of 3D Shape: From Local 2D Image Measurements to 3D Surface Properties.

Inferring 3D surface structure is one of the most fundamental functions of vision. There are many well-known depth cues, such as shading, texture, and highlights. However, how these cues are extracted from images-and what exactly they tell the brain about 3D shape-is not fully understood. Here, we describe how these seemingly distinct 3D shape cues could share a common currency for the first stages of shape estimation. The key insight is that when patterns such as shading or texture are projected from a 3D object into the 2D retinal image, they are spatially distorted, with profound consequenc

Hydrophilic cationic surface modification confers simultaneous antibacterial and antithrombotic properties to blood-contacting devices.

The clinical application of blood-contacting medical devices carries lethal risks such as sepsis and vascular embolism, with thrombosis and bacterial infection being core complications that severely threaten device safety. Although cationic surface modification strategies exhibit broad-spectrum antibacterial properties without the risk of bacterial resistance, non-specific adhesion induced by electrostatic effects both diminishes antibacterial efficacy and exacerbates thrombotic risk. Hydrophilic modification techniques are extensively employed in anti-adhesion surface coating research. This s

Modeling and optimization of cranial suture anisotropic material properties using a response surface methodology.

The present study aimed to develop and validate a transversely isotropic finite element (FE) model of the cranial suture that predicts suture mechanics, validated using ex-vivo data from the swine internasal suture. A 2D displacement-controlled FE model of the bone-suture-bone complex was constructed using microcomputed tomography (μCT) images, with a uniform cross-section and boundary conditions replicating experimental tensile tests. Suture geometry was modeled at three evenly spaced positions to explore how material anisotropy captures regional mechanical variation. Collagen fiber orientati
