Macroscopic, Histological and Ultrastructural Features of the Tongue of the Anatolian Wild Boar (Sus scrofa libycus).

This study provides a detailed characterization of the macroscopic anatomy and microscopic features (light and scanning electron microscopy) of the lingual papillae in the adult Anatolian wild boar (Sus scrofa libycus). Tissue samples were taken from two adult wild boars found dead in their natural habitat within an average of 1.5 h. Following macroscopic observation, samples underwent routine histological processing, histochemical staining, and high-resolution surface morphology analysis via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Morphological analysis revealed five distinct types of papillae: f

Invasive wild boar (Sus scrofa) as a functional reservoir for the dynamics of Trichinella in the Patagonia region.

Trichinellosis is a zoonotic disease that has been studied mainly in domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus). The cycle involves infection in domestic and wild fauna, which fulfill complex ecological roles, where Trichinella spiralis is reported in wild boar (Sus scrofa). The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of trichinellosis in wild boar and evaluate the distance of positive animals to the nearest urbanization areas in Argentina Patagonia. Necropsies were carried out on wild boar hunted in the Nahuel Huapi and Lanín National Parks and surrounding areas. Skeletal muscle sa

Development of microglia in fetal and postnatal neocortex of the pig, the European wild boar (Sus scrofa).

Knowledge on cortical development is based mainly on rodents besides primates and carnivores, all being altricial. Here, we analyzed a precocial animal, the pig, looking at dorsoparietal cortex from E45 to P90. At E45, most ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1-positive (Iba1+) cells had a macrophage-like morphology and resided in meninges and choroid plexus. Only a few cells were scattered in the ventricular and subventricular zone (VZ and SVZ). At E60/E70, all laminar compartments displayed microglia cells at a low-to-moderate density, being highest in VZ and SVZ followed by intermediat

[Reactions of European wild boars (Sus scrofa scrofa L.) to running stress. 2. Circulation values, blood glucose and lactates and blood acid-base status].

Four female and four male wild boars, 63.8 +/- 4.43 kg in live weight, were exposed to locomotor stress on a horizontally operated belt set to a speed of 2.5 m/s for ten minutes. The ambient temperatures were between 12 degrees C and 18 degrees C and the relative humidities between 55 and 75%. The following parameters were measured prior to, during, and after the stress tests: rectal temperature, haemoglobin level, haematocrit, plasma and blood volumes, total haemoglobin levels, lactic acid and glucose levels in blood plasma, pH, pCO2, and excess base. Rectal temperatures went up continuously.

Molecular prevalence of Giardia duodenalis in domestic pig (Sus domesticus) and captive wild boar (Sus scrofa) in China: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Giardia duodenalis is a typical enteric protozoan pathogen that causes diarrhea in humans and various animals, including domestic pigs (Sus domesticus) and wild boars (Sus scrofa). A healthy livestock would help maintain a hygienic environment, which is crucial for human health. This review has summarized the molecular prevalence of G. duodenalis among various types of pigs (domestic pigs and captive wild boars) in China on the basis of relevant data. A random-effects model of meta-analysis was used to estimate the overall and subgroup-based pooled prevalence of G. duodenalis, and the I2 index

Evidence of West Nile Virus Infections in Wild Boars (Sus scrofa) in the Netherlands, 2018-2021.

INTRODUCTION: Orthoflaviviruses are emerging in Europe and have potential significant impact on animal and public health. Usutu virus (USUV) and West Nile virus (WNV) have been first detected in the Netherlands in 2016 and 2020, respectively. Wild boars (Sus scrofa) have been suggested as an interesting population to detect the circulation of orthoflaviviruses. We aim to provide epidemiological insights of USUV and WNV infections in wild boars in the Netherlands. We further explore the interpretation of serological results, taking into account cross-reactivity patterns. METHODS: A total of 15

Refining animal welfare of wild boar (Sus scrofa) corral-style traps through behavioral and pathological investigations.

Wild boar trapping has been used as a management tool to control wild boar populations. However, it is increasingly criticized due to animal welfare concerns. While cortisol levels have been used to assess trap-related stress in wild boar, data on trap-related injuries and behavioral data are scarce. We aimed to evaluate three different corral-style traps for wild boar according to available mammal trapping standards to investigate and refine animal welfare in wild boar trapping. We examined 138 wild boars captured and killed by head shot in 27 capture events. Traps were closed by remote contr

Late-onset vanishing testis-like syndrome in a 38,XX/38,XY agonadic pig (Sus scrofa).

Here we describe the case of a pig with intersex traits including ambiguous external genitalia, sex chromosome abnormalities and a late-onset vanishing testis-like syndrome. It was identified shortly after birth by presenting a predominantly female phenotype with two large scrotal masses resembling testes. The karyotype is 38,XX (53%)/38,XY (47%). Sex steroid levels were undetectable at 1 and 7 months old, whereas circulating cortisol levels were typical. DNA studies excluded gene alterations in sex-determining region Y (SRY), dosage-sensitive sex reversal-congenital adrenal hypoplasia critica

Taenia hydatigena cysticercosis in wild boar (Sus scrofa) from southern Italy: an epidemiological and molecular survey.

Taenia hydatigena cysticercosis is a widespread parasitic disease of wild and domestic animals. In Europe, the increase in wild boar population may potentially contribute to the spread of this parasitic infection. To determine the occurrence of cysticerci (metacestodes) in wild boar population from southern Italy, carcasses were inspected during three hunting seasons (2016-2018). Out of 3363 wild boar examined, 229 (6.8%) harboured cysticerci with 188 (82.1%) infected by a single cyst, vs 41 (17.9%) boars having more than one. Most of the positive animals (187; 81.7%) showed cysts on the liver

Postmortem submersion interval (PMSI) estimation from the microbiome of Sus scrofa bone in a freshwater river.

Due to inherent differences between terrestrial and aquatic systems, methods for estimating the postmortem interval (PMI) are not directly applicable to remains recovered from water. Recent studies have explored the use of microbial succession for estimating the postmortem submersion interval (PMSI); however, a non-disturbed, highly replicated and long-term aquatic decomposition study in a freshwater river has not been performed. In this study, porcine skeletal remains (N = 200) were submerged in a freshwater river from November 2017-2018 (6322 accumulated degree days (ADD)/353 days) to identi

Screening of Pig (Sus scrofa) Bactericidal Permeability-Increasing Protein (BPI) Gene as Marker for Disease Resistance.

Salmonella infection can cause septicemia, acute or chronic enteritis and wasting in weaned pigs, but may occur in other age groups. The bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) gene plays an important role in the natural defense of the host and is found to be associated with resistance/susceptibility to Salmonella infection and identified as a candidate gene for disease resistance breeding in pig. This study was conducted to screen the resistance and/or susceptibility of pigs to Salmonella infection, to determine the genotype and evaluate presence of resistant allele of the BPI gene

Closed-loop glycaemic control using an implantable artificial pancreas in diabetic domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus).

The performance of a completely implantable peritoneal artificial pancreas (AP) has been demonstrated in principle in a live diabetic domestic pig. The device consists of a smart glucose-sensitive gel that forms a gateway to an insulin reservoir and is designed to both sense glucose and deliver insulin in the peritoneal cavity. It can be refilled with insulin via subcutaneous ports and surgery was developed to insert the AP. Diabetes was induced with streptozotocin (STZ), the device filled with insulin (Humulin(®) R U-500) in situ and the animal observed for several weeks, during which time th
