Sweat Na+/K+ ratio as a practical biological index for estimating sweating rate and salt loss rate.

Objectives A simple method to evaluate clinically the sweating rate and the salt loss rate via sweating would enable the early detection of heat-related illness in workers. We measured K+ concentration in sweat and calculated the Na+/K+ ratio to evaluate its utility for estimating sweating rate and salt loss rate. We hypothesized that compared with single electrolyte concentrations, the Na+/K+ ratio would be less affected by the rapid evaporation of sweat. Methods Thirteen healthy males exercised on a bicycle ergometer in an artificial climate room, and their sweating rates and Na+ and K+ conc

Identification of novel skin/sweat-specific CpG sites and development of a skin/sweat identification multiplex system for forensic analysis.

Identification of the biological origin of forensic stains provides critical contextual information for crime scene reconstruction and evidence interpretation. Among forensic biological materials, skin/sweat is particularly important for distinguishing intimate from social contact in sexual assault investigations. Although DNA methylation-based body fluid identification has advanced considerably, reliable CpG sites for skin remain scarce. Here, we systematically screened skin/sweat-specific CpG sites using Illumina Infinium MethylationEPIC (850 K) array data from five body fluids and developed

Histochemical and immunohistochemical markers for human eccrine and apocrine sweat glands: an aid for histopathologic differentiation of sweat gland tumors.

Apocrine and eccrine sweat glands are distinct in function, although they are closely related to each other developmentally and morphologically. In certain sweat gland tumors, it is difficult to differentiate between eccrine or apocrine sweat glands. Therefore, this paper reviews histochemical and immunohistochemical markers to differentiate apocrine and eccrine sweat glands with the aim of better understanding the structural and functional characteristics of these sweat glands. Specific markers for apocrine sweat glands are as follows: neuraminidase sensitive anionic sites detected by cationi

Severe night sweating treated by oxybutynin.

UNLABELLED: Sleep hyperhidrosis is defined as profuse nocturnal sweating that disrupts sleep. Although the mechanism is unknown, some cases are secondary to hot flushes during the menopausal period, medical, mental and sleep disorders, and medication, while dysregulation of thermoregulation during sleep is suspected in primary cases. We present the case of a woman with severe primary sleep hyperhidrosis, occurring nightly for 23 years, which definitively resolved after brief treatment with oxybutynin (a muscarinic receptor-blocking anticholinergic). An ammoniacal odor in the sweat and a sensat

Persistent Night Sweats: Diagnostic Evaluation.

Night sweats are a nonspecific symptom that patients commonly experience but rarely discuss with their physicians without prompting. Although many life-threatening causes such as malignancies or infections have been described, most patients who report persistent night sweats in the primary care setting do not have a serious underlying disorder. Conditions commonly associated with night sweats include menopause, mood disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease, hyperthyroidism, and obesity. If a clinical diagnosis is apparent based on the initial history and physical examination, specific treatm

A case report of sweating caused by hydromorphone.

Thermoregulatory control of shivering and sweating is a complex process that can be affected by centrally acting medications. Opioids, in particular fentanyl and methadone, have been associated with sweating, but it remains a relatively rare occurrence in clinical practice. Under-recognition of this medication side-effect may lead to patient discomfort as well as a potentially unnecessary work-up to determine the etiology of the sweating. Here, we discuss severe sweating caused by hydromorphone that resolved upon the medication's discontinuation.

Old and New Approaches for Assessing Sweating.

The evaluation of sweating activities contributes to both medical services and social living. There are several old and new approaches for assessing sweating. These methods are mainly composed of adopted techniques that focus on detecting small amounts of water on the skin surface. For many years, the iodine-starch reaction has been applied in various settings to evaluate sweat on the skin surface. However, methodology based on the coloration of sweat is in a constant state of evolution, and multiple advancements have been made. Furthermore, common fingerprinting is not just used for obtaining

Pathogenesis of cholinergic urticaria in relation to sweating.

Cholinergic urticaria (CU) has clinically characteristic features, and has been frequently described in the literature. However, despite its comparatively old history, the pathogenesis and classification remains to be clarified. CU patients are occasionally complicated by anhidrosis and/or hypohidrosis. This reduced-sweat type should be included in the classification because the therapeutic approaches are different from the ordinary CU. It is also well-known that autologous sweat is involved in the occurrence of CU. More than half of CU patients may have sweat hypersensitivity. We attempt to c

Sweating impairment in patients with multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: To measure sweating in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sweating was measured by an evaporimeter after a heating stimulus in 29 MS patients and in 15 healthy control subjects. RESULTS: The MS patients sweated markedly less than the controls. After 10 min of heating the sweating was significantly lower in the forehead (P = 0.034), feet (right, P = 0.033; left, P = 0.037) and legs (right, P = 0.043; left, P = 0.029) of the MS patients than in those of the controls. After 15 min of heating the difference was statistically significant only in the feet (ri

Hyperhidrosis--causes and treatment of enhanced sweating.

BACKGROUND: Basically two types of sweating exist: thermoregulatory and emotional sweating. They are controlled by different centers: thermo regulatory sweating is regulated predominantly by the hypothalamus, emotional sweating predominantly by the limbic system. Enhanced sweating, called hyperhidrosis, can be generalized or focal. Primary focal hyperhidrosis is the most common type and affects the axillae, hands, feet, and face--areas principally involved in emotional sweating. Secondary hyperhidrosis develops due to dysfunction of the central or peripheral nervous system. METHODS: Review ba

A medical alternative to the treatment of compensatory sweating.

Compensatory sweating after sympathectomy does not have a satisfactory, free-of-secondary-effects treatment. Glycopyrrolate has been successfully used to treat other types of hyperhidrosis. Compensatory sweating after sympathectomy could respond to the topical application of glycopyrrolate. Ten patients were selected with compensatory sweating after sympathectomy. One milliliter of a 2% water solution of topical glycopyrrolate was applied once a day over the affected area and massaged for 30 seconds. Treatment was maintained for 6 weeks. The results were rated using a scale from 1 to 10 of sat

Phantom sweating: a novel autonomic paresthesia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the biology of phantom sweating, a novel autonomic neuropathy symptom, based on a description of a patient with a small fiber and autonomic neuropathy. METHODS: Clinical and laboratory assessments. RESULTS: Evidence of a generalized small fiber and autonomic neuropathy. INTERPRETATION: Phantom sweating occurs frequently after sympathectomy but has not been reported previously in patients with a somatosensory or autonomic neuropathy. We suggest that this symptom is an autonomic paresthesia.

[Gastroesophageal reflux as a cause of night sweating].

Night sweats has been defined as drenching sweats that require the patient to change bed clothes. In current studies night sweats appear in 30% of non-obstetric patients and affects approximately 60% of pregnant women. Differential diagnoses include infections, malignancy, medications, hot flashes and panic attacks, making of each patient a challenge. We present two patients with night sweating. After excluding systemic diseases the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux was made, with excellent response to anti-reflux treatment. The presentation of our two patients coupled with a deep literatur

Thoracoscopic sympathetic surgery for hand sweating.

Recently, thoracoscopic surgery has been shown to be effective for the relief of hand sweating. Although it is not fatal if left untreated, the treatment aim is to improve the quality of daily life. Therefore, it is important to understand the complaints of the patient, and provide an adequate explanation regarding postoperative sequelae. Surgeons should also recognize that thoracoscopic surgery might cause problems when performed, as the general risk of surgery remains. Many patients have been helped by the procedure, as their choices in life have expanded, and satisfactory results can be obt

Anthrax and the etiology of the English sweating sickness.

In 2001, spores of Bacillus anthracis were deliberately sent through the United States postal system, resulting in five deaths from inhalational anthrax. Rarely observed clinical symptoms associated with these cases led to a hypothesis about the etiology of the English Sweating Sickness. The disease appeared sporadically in England between 1485 and 1551. Numerous viruses have been proposed as possible causes of the "English Sweat". Anthrax has not previously been considered because, documented cases of inhalational anthrax have been rare and pronounced sweating was not a noted symptom of the m
