The most common cause of diseases in swimming pools is the lack of sanitary control of water quality; water may contain microbiological and chemical contaminants. Among the people most at risk of infection are children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised people. The origin of the problem is a need to develop a system that can predict the formation of chlorine water disinfection by-products, such as trihalomethanes (THMs). THMs are volatile organic compounds from the group of alkyl halides, carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic, and bioaccumulating. Long-term exposure, even to low concentrati

Patients with swimming pool-acquired human adenovirus (HAdV) infections usually manifest characteristic clinical features that include fever, pharyngitis, and conjunctival inflammation, syndromically referred to as pharyngoconjunctival fever (PCF). HAdV types 3, 4, and 7 are most commonly associated with PCF. This article reports an outbreak of PCF that involved 55 students and staff at a university in Beijing, China. Fifty patients had used the same swimming pool 2 weeks before the onset of symptoms. HAdV type 4 was identified from patient eye and throat swabs and concentrated swimming pool w

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) are formed in swimming pools by the reactions of bather inputs with the disinfectant. Although a wide range of molecules has been identified within DBPs, only few kinetic rates have been reported. This study investigates the kinetics of chlorine consumption, chloroform formation and dichloroacetonitrile formation caused by human releases. Since the flux and main components of human inputs have been determined and formalized through Body Fluid Analogs (BFAs), it is possible to model the DBPs formation kinetics by studying a limited number of precursor molecules.

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the prevalence of self-reported respiratory, ocular and cutaneous symptoms in subjects working at indoor swimming pools and to assess the relationship between frequency of declared symptoms and occupational exposure to disinfection by-products (DBPs). Twenty indoor swimming pools in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy were included in the study. Information about the health status of 133 employees was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Subjects working at swimming pools claimed to frequently experience the following

This study aimed to optimise performance prediction in short-course swimming through Principal Component Analyses (PCA) and multiple regression. All women's freestyle races at the European Short-Course Swimming Championships were analysed. Established performance metrics were obtained including start, free-swimming, and turn performance metrics. PCA were conducted to reduce redundant variables, and a multiple linear regression was performed where the criterion was swimming time. A practical tool, the Potential Predictor, was developed from regression equations to facilitate performance predict

Swimming is the second most popular exercise activity in the United States, with approximately 360 million annual visits to recreational water venues (1). This exposure increases the potential for the spread of recreational water illnesses (RWIs) (e.g., cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, and shigellosis). Since the 1980s, the number of reported RWI outbreaks has increased steadily (2). Local environmental health programs inspect public and semipublic pools periodically to determine compliance with local and state health regulations. During inspections for regulatory compliance, data pertaining to

Swimming in pools involves inhalation and skin absorption of potential carcinogenic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) as well as physical activity, which is protective for some cancer sites. We evaluated the association between lifetime pool attendance and the risk of breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer in a multicase-control study that recruited 4,941 hospital-based cancer cases (1,724 breast, 2,111 colorectal, 1,106 prostate) and 4,039 population-based controls in Spain (2008-2013). Lifetime swimming pool attendance in summer (as a surrogate of outdoor pools) and the rest of the year (as a

In recent decades, natural swimming pools (NSPs) have gained popularity in Europe, especially in Germany and Austria. NSPs differ from swimming pools in that they utilize biological treatment processes based on wetland processes with no disinfection residual. However, data are missing on the specific log-reduction performance of NSPs to address enteric virus, bacteria, and parasitic protozoa removal considered necessary to meet the North American risk-based benchmark (<35 illnesses per 1,000 swimming events) set by the USEPA for voluntary swimming. In this study, we examined Canada's first NSP

The chlorinated salts of cyanuric acid have found an important role in recreational swimming pool waters across the United States. Upon application to pool water, they can (1) release disinfectant chlorine or (2) stabilize the free available chlorine by acting as chlorine reservoirs in the form of cyanuric acid, preventing the photolytic destruction of residual chlorine by sunlight. Recommended levels of the cyanuric acid stabilizer are in the 10-100 mg/L concentration range according to the National Swimming Pool Foundation (San Antonio, TX). Two isocratic HPLC methods with UV detection (213

SCUBA divers are predisposed to otitis externa caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is becoming increasingly multi-drug resistant (MDR). The present work assessed the antibiotic resistance profiles of P. aeruginosa obtained from SCUBA divers and their environment in Sodwana Bay, South Africa. Bacterial isolates from a total of 137 random water and ear swab samples were identified using biochemical and molecular methods. P. aeruginosa strains were further evaluated for antibiotic susceptibility using the Kirby-Bauer assay. Double disk synergy test (DDST) to confirm metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) outbreaks caused by Escherichia coli are typically foodborne, and linked to contaminated food or water sources. This article describes an outbreak associated with a public aquatic facility during a state-level championship in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, in July 2024. The outbreak was linked to a malfunctioning pool filtration system and inadequate maintenance, creating an unusual environmental source of E. coli transmission. Epidemiological investigations were conducted, along with environmental assessments and laboratory analyses of clinical (rectal swabs and stool cult

Cryptosporidium species are responsible for causing the majority of parasite-related gastrointestinal infections in the UK. This report describes an outbreak of 12 laboratory-confirmed cryptosporidiosis cases identified as part of a Scottish swimming pool investigation, with 9 primary and 3 secondary cases occurring over an 8-week period. Molecular speciation was successful for 11/12 cases, which revealed 10 Cryptosporidium hominis cases and 1 Cryptosporidium parvum case. Of the 10 C. hominis cases, further typing identified 7 as being an unusual sub-type, IbA6G3, which is the first descriptio

In this study, a compact capillary liquid chromatography (capLC) system (<10 Kg) has been coupled with two small-footprint and portable single quadrupole mass spectrometers (<35 Kg) for the analysis of haloacetic acids (HAAs) in water samples. The portable capillary liquid chromatograph was equipped with a polar-modified C18 column (100 × 0.5 mm, particle size: 3 μm) and utilised gradient elution with 0.05 % formic acid and methanol to selectively separate and quantify the 9 HAAs (HAA9) recommended for monitoring by United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). A novel multi-slot and pool-weir combined fishway (named as MSWF-5) was recently proposed by combining the merits of vertical-slot fishway and pool-weir fishway. This study aims to systematically compare the hydrodynamic properties between MSWF-5 and other technical fishways and further reveals the effect of hydrodynamic properties on fish-passage efficiency and fish-swimming behaviours in MSWF-5 by using grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). The hydrodynamic properties are obtained using three-dimensional numerical simulations, and fish-swimming behaviours are acquired using fish-passage expe
