Learning graphic symbols in two languages: Effects of monolingual teaching.

PURPOSE: Limited research exists to guide augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention for children from multilingual backgrounds. When a graphic symbol-based AAC system is provided to children, they need to learn the meaning of the graphic symbols. This study determined the effect of teaching the association between a graphic symbol and a spoken word in one language on the ability of bilingual children without disabilities to transfer this learning to their second language. METHOD: A one-group pre-test-post-test design was used. The ability of 30 English-Afrikaans bilingual

Effectiveness of the International Symbol of Access and inclusivity of other disability groups.

BACKGROUND: The International Symbol of Access (ISA) is recognized world-wide for designating and identifying areas which are wheelchair accessible, however its meaning has evolved to include both restricted use and universal accessibility. OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of the ISA in representing individuals of all impairment types. METHODS: A mixed-method survey was disseminated in the U.S. and internationally to persons without self-identified impairment and individuals of various impairment group types, including mobility, vision, hearing, and cognitive impa

The opium poppy as a symbol of sleep in Bertel Thorvaldsen's relief of 1815.

Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) is one of the most remarkable representatives of Neoclassicist sculptural art in Europe, which was largely inspired by the classical art and culture of Greek and Roman antiquity. A pair of marble reliefs, Night and Day, exhibited in the Thorvaldsen Museum (Copenhagen), marks the culmination of Thorvaldsen's relief art and is of particular interest to the history of sleep medicine. In the first relief, Night, an angel with her neck bent and eyes closed has two babies in her embrace and seems to be floating down in grief, with an owl hovering behind

Qualitatively different coding of symbolic and nonsymbolic numbers in the human brain.

Are symbolic and nonsymbolic numbers coded differently in the brain? Neuronal data indicate that overlap in numerical tuning curves is a hallmark of the approximate, analogue nature of nonsymbolic number representation. Consequently, patterns of fMRI activity should be more correlated when the representational overlap between two numbers is relatively high. In bilateral intraparietal sulci (IPS), for nonsymbolic numbers, the pattern of voxelwise correlations between pairs of numbers mirrored the amount of overlap in their tuning curves under the assumption of approximate, analogue coding. In c

Early trauma and affect: the importance of the body for the development of the capacity to symbolize.

In this paper I aim to outline the importance of working clinically with affect when treating severely traumatized patients who have a limited capacity to symbolize. These patients, who suffer the loss of maternal care early in life, require the analyst to be closely attuned to the patient's distress through use of the countertransference and with significantly less attention paid to the transference. It is questionable whether we can speak of transference when there is limited capacity to form internal representations. The analyst's relationship with the patient is not necessarily used to mak

Dorsal and ventral attention systems underlie social and symbolic cueing.

Eye gaze is a powerful cue for orienting attention in space. Studies examining whether gaze and symbolic cues recruit the same neural mechanisms have found mixed results. We tested whether there is a specialized attentional mechanism for social cues. We separately measured BOLD activity during orienting and reorienting attention following predictive gaze and symbolic cues. Results showed that gaze and symbolic cues exerted their influence through the same neural networks but also produced some differential modulations. Dorsal frontoparietal regions in left intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and bilate

Modulation of cortical motor outputs by the symbolic meaning of visual stimuli.

The observation of an action modulates motor cortical outputs in specific ways, in part through mediation of the mirror neuron system. Sometimes we infer a meaning to an observed action based on integration of the actual percept with memories. Here, we conducted a series of experiments in healthy adults to investigate whether such inferred meanings can also modulate motor cortical outputs in specific ways. We show that brief observation of a neutral stimulus mimicking a hand does not significantly modulate motor cortical excitability (Study 1) although, after prolonged exposure, it can lead to

Symbolic healing of early psychosis: psychoeducation and sociocultural processes of recovery.

This article analyzes sociocultural processes of recovery in a Danish mental health service providing two years of integrated biopsychosocial treatment following first-episode psychosis. The study is based on ethnographic research in the service and person-centered involvement with 15 clients. The analysis applies Dow's [1986 American Anthropologist 88:56-69] model of universal components of symbolic healing to elucidate sociocultural aspects of therapeutic efficacy that are alternatively disregarded as placebo or nonspecific effects. It is demonstrated how staff engaged with clients to delive

Towards a neuro-symbolic approach for precision anti-reflux surgery.

Surgical management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is limited by non-technical challenges, including variability in patient selection, incomplete physiological assessment, imprecise procedure choice, and heterogeneity of intraoperative judgment. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers a promising approach to address these limitations. To enhance decision reproducibility and explainability, we advocate for the integration of AI models based on machine learning with formal logic-based reasoning. This neuro-symbolic approach enables the formal encoding of clinical knowledge, the management

Symbolated texts as an assistive technology: Exploring the impact on reading comprehension.

BACKGROUND: It is widely assumed that pairing graphic symbols with text supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in accessing written content. As a result, these symbolated texts are often used as an assistive technology to increase text accessibility. Unfortunately, there is little empirical evidence that symbolated texts improve reading comprehension. Research with beginning and struggling readers suggests that pairing text with any type of image makes understanding text more difficult and impedes reading growth by distracting individuals' visual attention

Learning pharmacometric covariate model structures with symbolic regression networks.

Efficiently finding covariate model structures that minimize the need for random effects to describe pharmacological data is challenging. The standard approach focuses on identification of relevant covariates, and present methodology lacks tools for automatic identification of covariate model structures. Although neural networks could potentially be used to approximate covariate-parameter relationships, such approximations are not human-readable and come at the risk of poor generalizability due to high model complexity. In the present study, a novel methodology for the simultaneous selection of

Neural representations of absolute and relative magnitudes in symbolic and nonsymbolic formats.

Humans differ from other animal species in their unique ability to use symbols to represent numerical information. This ability is thought to emerge from the "neural recycling" of mechanisms supporting nonsymbolic magnitudes in the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), a hypothesis that has been applied to both absolute magnitudes (e.g., whole numbers) and relative magnitudes (e.g., fractions). Yet, evidence for the neuronal recycling hypothesis is inconsistent for absolute magnitudes and scarce for relative magnitudes. Here, we investigated to what extent the neural representations of absolute and rela

The Roles of Gestural and Symbolic Schematizations in Inhibition as a Component of Executive Functions.

The role of gestural schematization in enhancing thinking processes has been the subject of a large body of works. In this process, contextually unimportant or irrelevant information related to a concept (or a system of concepts) is deleted or ignored, while relevant spatial information is maintained. This process is a special type of inhibition, which is one of the key components of executive functions. In this short paper, it is suggested that gestural schematization is a special type of symbolic schematization, a much more general process through which irrelevant information related to feat

Developmental specialization of the left intraparietal sulcus for symbolic ordinal processing.

Symbolic numbers have both cardinal (symbol-quantity) and ordinal (symbol-symbol) referents. Despite behavioural evidence suggesting distinct processing of cardinal and ordinal referents, little consensus has emerged from the neuroimaging literature on whether these processes have shared or distinct neural underpinnings. Moreover, it remains unclear how the neural correlates of cardinal and ordinal processing change with age. To address these unresolved questions, we investigated the neural correlates of cardinal (neural distance effect) and ordinal processing (neural reverse distance effect)

Classification of auditory brainstem responses through symbolic pattern discovery.

INTRODUCTION: Numeric time series are present in a very wide range of domains, including many branches of medicine. Data mining techniques have proved to be useful for knowledge discovery in this type of data and for supporting decision-making processes. OBJECTIVES: The overall objective is to classify time series based on the discovery of frequent patterns. These patterns will be discovered in symbolic sequences obtained from the time series data by means of a temporal abstraction process. METHODS: Firstly, we transform numeric time series into symbolic time sequences, where the symbols aim
