War is the Enemy of Health. Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine in War-Torn Syria.

The Syrian crisis, now in its fifth year, has created an unprecedented strain on health services and systems due to the protracted nature of the warfare, the targeting of medics and health care infrastructure, the exodus of physicians and nurses, the shortage of medical supplies and medications, and the disruption of medical education and training. Within a few short years, the life expectancy of resident Syrians has declined by 20 years. Over the first 4 years of the conflict, more than 75,000 civilians died from injuries incurred in the violence. More than twice as many civilians, including

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in the central provinces of Hama and Edlib in Syria: Vector identification and parasite typing.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a disease transmitted by sand fly bites. This disease is highly prevalent in Syria where Leishmania major and Leishmania tropica are the known aetiological agents. In 2011, more than 58,000 cases were reported in the country by the Ministry of Health. The central region of the country harbors 20 % of the reported cases. However, the epidemiology of the disease in this area is not well understood. An epidemiological survey was conducted in 2010 to identity the circulating parasite and the sand fly vector in the central provinces of Edlib and Hama. METHODS

Predictors of adherence to pharmacological and behavioral treatment in a cessation trial among smokers in Aleppo, Syria.

INTRODUCTION: The development of evidence-based smoking cessation programs is in its infancy in developing countries, which continue to bear the main brunt of the tobacco epidemic. Adherence to treatment recommendations is an important determinant of the success of smoking cessation programs, but little is known about factors influencing adherence to either pharmacological or behavioral treatment in developing countries settings. Our study represents the first attempt to examine the predictors of adherence to cessation treatment in a low-income developing country. METHODS: Predictors of adher

Effect of postnatal home visits on maternal/infant outcomes in Syria: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Early postpartum home visiting is universal in many Western countries. Studies from developing countries on the effects of home visits are rare. In Syria, where the postpartum period is rather ignored, this study aimed to assess whether a community-based intervention of postnatal home visits has an effect on maternal postpartum morbidities; infant morbidity; uptake of postpartum care; use of contraceptive methods; and on selected neonatal health practices. DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial was carried out in Damascus. Three groups of new mothers were randomly allocated to recei

[Human cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania Major MON-26 in the region of Damascus (Syria)].

In response to an epidemic of oriental sore around Damascus, an ecological and epidemiological survey was carried out in the village of Dmeir, 40 km NE of Damascus. Parasites isolated from six cases from Dmeir, and two other cases from Syria were identified as Leishmania major, zymodeme MON-26. This zymodeme is known as the agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis from the Sub-Saharian Sahel to the Near and Middle East. This is the first report of L. major in Syria. In a group of 234 school children aged 5-11 years, the leishmanin skin test was positive in 37%, indicating a high transmission

Differences in the severity of physical signs in the right and left eyes of patients with trachoma in Syria and Burma.

A field record card to permit the recording of physical signs separately in the two eyes, in cases of trachoma was produced by WHO in 1967. The card was used to record clinical examinations in a controlled trial in Syria in 1967 and in the running assessment of a trachoma control programme in Burma in 1968-69.Differences in physical signs in the two eyes were observed in over 20% of cases in Syria and over 35% of cases in Burma. Even when limited to the same stage of infection, differences between the two eyes in the same individual are in the order of 10%. Limiting the examination to one eye

Molecular Detection of natural bacterial flora within Culex pipiens pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) in Aleppo, Syria.

Culex pipiens complex members have been known as important vectors of medical and veterinary arthropod-borne diseases for many pathogens (viral, bacterial, parasitic). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate natural bacterial flora within the Culex pipiens pipiens (Linnaeus,1758) collected from Aleppo City, Syria. Specimens of Cx. p. pipiens were identified based on a pictorial key. The presence of bacterial species was investigated using the PCR technique and special culture media. Results indicated the presence of mine bacterial species, including Wolbachia pipiens, Moraxella catarrhalis,

New insight on etiology: A chorionic bump with partial mole pregnancy case report from Syria.

This case report presents the association of a chorionic bump with a partial mole pregnancy in a 37-year-old G3P2 woman. The differential diagnosis of a partial mole was considered after transvaginal ultrasonography revealed a chorionic bump. Subsequent pathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis. While the etiology of the chorionic bump remains dubious, we hypothesize an alternative explanation for chorionic bump formation based on the presence of three unique pathological features: necrosis, edema, and hemorrhage.

Broad ligament ectopic pregnancy with full-term live birth: a rare case report from Syria.

Ectopic pregnancy, the implantation of a fertilized zygote outside the uterine cavity, presents with abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. Diagnosis relies on clinical signs, and treatment involves surgery or methotrexate in selected cases. A 24-year-old woman at 37 weeks of gestation underwent elective cesarean delivery under general anesthesia, revealing an unexpected broad ligament ectopic pregnancy. The live fetus and placenta were successfully delivered without complications. The study reports a rare asymptomatic broad ligament ectopic pregnancy until 37 weeks, diagnosed by laparotomy-trea

A 15-year-old male with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome: a rare case report from Syria.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: In addition to extra gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyps, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), a rare but well-known hereditary disorder, generates mucocutaneous lesions that resemble certain coloured freckles and gastrointestinal symptoms. Intussusception or polyps blocking the gastrointestinal lumen are examples of PJS consequences. Additionally, the polyps may cause ongoing bleeding that causes anaemia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old male patient with generalized stomach discomfort, frequent vomiting, and decreased appetite reported to the hospital's ambulance dep

Crisis-based psychiatry curriculum update: A cross-sectional study and an expert reflection from Syria.

Throughout human history, humanitarian catastrophes had a profound impact on the health and wellbeing of the local populations where they took place. The Syrian war was no different, rather it was the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II. Syrians' wellbeing was severely affected during this past decade, as had Syria's healthcare and mental health facilities. Syrian doctors have faced unprecedented difficulties and challenges across clinical disciplines and services, particularly in psychiatry. Medical students may play a central role in attenuating the burden of psychiatric diseases on

Strategic Response to an Outbreak of Circulating Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus Type 2 - Syria, 2017-2018.

Since the 1988 inception of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), progress toward interruption of wild poliovirus (WPV) transmission has occurred mostly through extensive use of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) in mass vaccination campaigns and through routine immunization services (1,2). However, because OPV contains live, attenuated virus, it carries the rare risk for reversion to neurovirulence. In areas with very low OPV coverage, prolonged transmission of vaccine-associated viruses can lead to the emergence of vaccine-derived polioviruses (VDPVs), which can cause outbreaks of paral

Short-term outcomes of the right ventricle to pulmonary artery conduit "NeoCor" in Syria: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery (RV-PA) reconstruction often requires a valved conduit; however, no single option is ideal across ages and anatomical variations. We report early outcomes of a bovine pericardial xenograft conduit (NeoCor) as a practical solution in a resource-limited setting. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective series, eight pediatric patients (1-14 years) underwent RV-PA reconstruction (2019-2024) using a bovine pericardial xenograft conduit sized by nomogram (10-21 mm). A single surgical team performed all procedures under standardized perioperative

High frequency of antibiotic administration for COVID-19 patients in Syria and its associations with mortality and complications.

BACKGROUND: Syria’s healthcare system was severely challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic due to resource scarcity and a shortage of healthcare personnel. In this context, antibiotics were frequently prescribed empirically because of limited diagnostic capacity, concerns about secondary bacterial infections, and delayed hospitalization, despite the limited evidence of bacterial co-infection among patients with COVID-19. METHOD: This study investigates the use of antibiotics among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Syria, focusing on its association with mortality, ICU admissions, and complications

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of maxilla misdiagnosed as a benign fibrous lesion: A rare case report from Syria.

INTRODUCTION: Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MC) is a high-grade variant of chondrosarcoma, essentially composed of poorly differentiated spindle cells interspersed with areas of cartilage or chondroid matrix. MC is extremely rare; it only accounts for 0.1 % of head and neck tumors and for only 1 % of all chondrosarcomas (CSs). CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old man presented with a medical history of a painful irritation at the dextral maxillary region, presented as a mass at the vestibule of the oral cavity near the upper molars, and had been misdiagnosed as a benign fibrous lesion and excised w

Factors contributing to bleeding and perforated peptic ulcers in Syria: findings from a multicenter cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by the formation of open lesions in the stomach or duodenum, leading to potentially life-threatening complications such as bleeding, perforation, and obstruction. Despite advances in understanding its pathophysiology and management, PUD continues to present significant health challenges, particularly in conflict-affected regions like Syria. This study investigates clinical presentation, demographic factors, and risk profiles associated with bleeding and perforated ulcers, aiming to contribute to evidence

Interplay of multiple neurological conditions - the first case of neurological Whipple's disease in Syria: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Whipple disease is a rare systemic infection caused by the bacterium Tropheryma whippelii, commonly affecting the gastrointestinal system, but it can also involve the central nervous system (CNS). Diagnosis typically relies on tissue biopsy and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for bacterial DNA. This case emphasizes the challenges in diagnosing and treating neurologic manifestations of Whipple disease and highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing complex neuroinfectious cases. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 35-year-old Syrian f
