Topical antibiotics for acute bacterial conjunctivitis: Cochrane systematic review and meta-analysis update.

Uncertainty remains about the extent to which findings from our previously published systematic review and meta-analysis of double-blind, randomised controlled trials of topical antibiotics compared with placebo in the management of patients with acute bacterial conjunctivitis treated in secondary care outpatient settings are generalisable to the management of the condition in primary care settings. We updated our review, undertaking searches, methodological assessment, data extraction and analysis according to a pre-defined protocol. In addition to the previous three included studies, we iden

Efficacy and Safety of Topical and Systemic Therapies for Atopic Dermatitis in Patients With Skin of Colour: A Systematic Review.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is more common and often more severe in people with skin of colour, yet the trials that shaped modern treatment enrolled mostly White participants. The disease can look different in darker skin, and erythema-based severity scores may miss active inflammation. Whether current topical and systemic drugs work as well, and are as safe, across racial, ethnic, and Fitzpatrick skin-type groups, is still uncertain. This review brought together the evidence on AD treatment outcomes reported by skin colour. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA

Safety and clinical efficacy of topical TXA in orthopedic trauma surgery: a systematic review and meta analysis.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative blood loss remains a major challenge in orthopedic trauma surgery, often necessitating transfusions and associated risks. Tranexamic acid (TXA), an antifibrinolytic agent, is increasingly used to minimize bleeding, yet the role of topical TXA in trauma surgery is less clearly defined. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Randomized controlled trials comparing topical tranexamic acid (TXA) with placebo or comparators in orthopedic trauma surgery were identified through searches of PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, C

An Updated Systematic Review of Topical Corticosteroid Withdrawal (TCSW): Steroid Addiction or Adverse Drug Effect?

Topical corticosteroid withdrawal (TCSW) can occur after prolonged topical corticosteroid (TCS) use. Despite the effectiveness of TCS in treating dermatological conditions, the phenomenon of steroid phobia has been gaining attention on social media platforms. This has contributed to increased anxiety among patients and potentially influenced their treatment adherence. This review aims to update the findings of two studies by investigating the latest research on TCSW. A systematic search was conducted in Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library from October 2020 to June 2024. Seven studie

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis: A Systematic Review of Cases Secondary to Topical Medications.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are typically triggered by systemic medications but can also result from topical agents. In this systematic review of SJS/TEN cases caused by topical agents, the drug culprits, disease characteristics, and outcomes were comparable to systemic cases. Our findings highlight that topical formulations, though generally considered safer, can induce SJS and TEN, underscoring the need for clinician awareness, early recognition and accurate reporting.

What Are Topical Adaptogens? A Systematic Review and Proposed System to Identify and Categorize Skin Adaptogens in Dermatology.

BACKGROUND: Skin adaptogens are a class of active ingredients that can enhance human adaptation by reducing the deleterious effects of intrinsic and extrinsic stressors. Adaptogens' homeostatic actions enhance the skin's resilience, improving skin health and quality. Most of the investigated and identified adaptogens are botanicals and have relevant applications in dermatology, but their precise mechanism of action (MOA) and classification are yet to be determined. METHODS: Articles related to botanical adaptogens published within the last 20 years were obtained from the Ovid, Cochrane, and P

Evaluating Topical Antifibrinolytics in Cardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis, and Trial Sequential Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Lysine analog antifibrinolytics (LAAF) like tranexamic acid (TXA) and aminocaproic acid (EACA) reduce intraoperative blood loss, especially in cardiac surgery where bleeding risks are high. These LAAFs inhibit fibrinolysis and have been proven to decrease bleeding and transfusion volume. In cardiac surgery, frequent transfusions raise the risk of infections, extend hospital stays and reoperations, and carry higher morbidity and mortality. Current guidelines recommend intravenous antifibrinolytics; however, the objective of this review was to determine whether topical administrati

Topical medications for moderate-to-severe rosacea: protocol for a living systematic review and network meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterised by papules, pustules, transient erythema (flushing), persistent erythema, telangiectasia and phymatous changes. Rosacea can be associated with substantial effects on quality of life. Rosacea is most commonly treated with topical therapy, but little is known about the relative efficacy of these treatment options.Since most randomised controlled trials of topical rosacea therapies do not include active comparators (ie, head-to-head comparisons), indirect comparisons must be made to understand the relative efficacy, safety and tolera
