Population encoding of observed and actual somatosensations in the human posterior parietal cortex.

Cognition relies on transforming sensory inputs into a generalizable understanding of the world. Mirror neurons have been proposed to underlie this process, mapping visual representations of others' actions and sensations onto neurons that mediate our own, providing a conduit for understanding. However, this theory has limitations. Here, we hypothesize that mirror-like responses represent one facet of a broader framework in which our brains engage internal models for cognition. We recorded populations of single neurons in the human posterior parietal cortex (PPC) of a brain-machine interface c

MRI Compatible Lumbopelvic Movement Measurement System to Validate and Capture Task Performance During Neuroimaging.

Research suggests that structural and functional changes within the brain are associated with chronic low back pain, and these cortical alterations might contribute to impaired sensorimotor control of the trunk and hips in this population. However, linking sensorimotor brain changes with altered movement of the trunk and hips during task-based neuroimaging presents significant challenges. An MRI-safe pressure measurement system was developed to ensure proper task completion during neuroimaging by capturing movement patterns of the trunk (sensors under the lower back) and hips (sensors embedded

Changes in task performance and frontal cortex activation within and over sessions during the n-back task.

The n-back task is a popular paradigm for studying neurocognitive processing at varying working memory loads. Although much is known about the effects of load on behavior and neural activation during n-back performance, the temporal dynamics of such effects remain unclear. Here, we investigated the within- and between-session stability and consistency of task performance and frontal cortical activation during the n-back task using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Forty healthy young adults performed the 1-back and 3-back conditions three times per condition. They then undertook i

Homing tasks performed using variations of crawling gait patterns reveal a role for attention in podokinetic path integration.

Self-motion can be perceived via podokinetic information, that is, based upon the movements of the legs during legged locomotion. This information can be integrated in order to perceive a path of travel through the environment (i.e., via podokinetic path integration). Two types of podokinetic information have been distinguished by analyzing the patterns of bias that result from manipulating the gait patterns used in direct-route homing tasks. Each type of podokinetic information has been associated specific groupings of gaits that support equivalent perceptual measurements of self-motion. Spec

Walking speed and dual task input modality impact performance on a self-paced treadmill.

Interference between a walking task (target speeds on a self-paced treadmill) and dual visual and tactile-visual response time task was investigated. Ambulatory dual-task scenarios reveal how attention is divided between walking and additional tasks, but the impact of walking speed and dual-task modality on gait characteristics and dual-task performance is unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of visual and tactile-visual dual-task on gait performance. Participants (n=15) targeted four speeds (0.5, 1.0, 1.3, and 1.5 m/s) on a self-paced treadmill with a visual speed ind

How Healthy Older Adults Enact Lateral Maneuvers While Walking.

BACKGROUND: Walking requires frequent maneuvers to navigate changing environments with shifting goals. Humans accomplish maneuvers and simultaneously maintain balance primarily by modulating their foot placement, but a direct trade-off between these two objectives has been proposed. As older adults may rely more on foot placement to maintain lateral balance, they may be less able to adequately adapt stepping to perform lateral maneuvers. RESEARCH QUESTION: How do older adults adapt stepping to enact lateral lane-change maneuvers, and how do physical and perceived ability influence their task

Dual task impact on functional mobility and interaction of functional level and balance in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Dystrophin, a protein crucial for various brain regions governing higher-order functions like learning and memory is notably absent in individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). This absence of dystrophin in the brain is believed to underlie cognitive challenges in DMD. Cognitive and motor challenges observed in DMD could potentially hinder the execution of dual tasks. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is there a significant correlation between dual-task performance, functional mobility, and balance in children with DMD? METHOD: The study included 28 participants (14 DMD, 14 typical de

A Comparison of Baseline Procedures in Task Analyses.

Several methods for assessing baseline performance in chained tasks have been outlined in the literature, including the fixed-opportunity probe (FOP) and the multiple-opportunity probe (MOP). Concerns have been raised regarding how each of these methods might change the baseline performance of a task, affecting the interpretation of experimental control. The purpose of the current study was to conduct a within-subject comparison of both the FOP and MOP procedures for children with autism performing daily living and self-care skills. Results indicated that, for most participants, the MOP result

Using HFACS to understand human error in railway dispatcher performance: a study of proactive safety inspection records.

This study analyzes 4,095 proactive safety inspection records obtained from a large dispatching centre by utilising the HFACS framework. These proactive safety inspection records offer comprehensive documentation of incidents, capturing major accidents and numerous minor discrepancies and lapses that often go unnoticed in accident reports. The analysis revealed that most incidents were attributed to unsafe actions, primarily skill-based errors and poor decision-making. Additionally, contributing factors such as adverse mental states, personal readiness, and crew resource management were found

Dual Task Performance in Adolescents With Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Daily life activities commonly include many combinations of dual tasks. Although dual task ability has been studied in healthy young adults, dual task performance in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (IS) has not been explored. Our objective in this study was to investigate dual task performance in adolescents with IS. We paired 33 adolescents diagnosed with IS and 33 healthy control participants (age range: 11-17 years) and administered to both groups the Stroop Color and Word test as a measure of cognitive ability, and both the Expanded Timed Up and Go (ETUG) test and the Tandem Gait tes

Treatment response profiles: An extension of the double dissociation concept in neuropsychological research.

The presence of double dissociations in patients with neurological damage has long been used as evidence that the dissociated functions cannot be explained in terms of a common system or module. Shallice (1988) has suggested that a second procedure, the double critical variable method, can provide evidence for a similar conclusion. In this paper we examine the situation where double dissocations are not naturally present, suggesting that the two phenomena are merely aspects of the same underlying condition. We propose that the logic of the double critical variable method can be applied in this

When do business units benefit more from collective citizenship behavior of management teams? An upper echelons perspective.

Drawing upon the notion of managerial discretion from upper echelons theory, we theorize which external contingencies moderate the relationship between collective organizational citizenship behavior (COCB) and unit performance. Focusing on business unit (BU) management teams, we hypothesize that COCB of BU management teams enhances BU performance and that this impact depends on environmental uncertainty and BU management-team decision latitude, 2 determinants of managerial discretion. In particular, the positive effect of COCB is stronger when environmental uncertainty or the BU management-tea

The "floating door sign" in Parkinson's disease.

Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) display micrographia. We report a new method to elicit micrographic drawing in individuals with PD and compare this to drawing in individuals with essential tremor (ET). We asked 81 individuals with PD and 19 individuals with ET to draw a house and write a sentence. We examined house height and whether vertical lines of the door connected to the house floor. If both vertical door lines failed to reach the floor by more than 1mm we designated this a "floating door sign". House height of <5 cm and letter height of <5 mm were considered micrographic drawi

The representation of response effector and response location in episodic memory for newly acquired actions: evidence from retrieval-induced forgetting.

Information retrieval can cause forgetting for related but non-retrieved information. Such retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF) has been previously found for semantically and episodically related information. The current study used RIF to examine whether response effector and location are encoded explicitly in action memory. Participants learned unique touchscreen responses to ten novel objects. Correct actions to each object involved left-hand or right-hand pushing of one of four possible object buttons. After learning, participants practiced two of the ten object-specific sequences. Unpractice

A footswitch evaluation of the gait of elderly fallers with and without a diagnosis of orthostatic hypotension and healthy elderly controls.

Gait abnormalities are a recognised risk factor for falling in the elderly and variability in gait has been shown to be a measurable predictor of falls. We carried out a footswitch evaluation of the temporal parameters of gait of elderly fallers with a primary diagnosis of Orthostatic Hypotension, elderly fallers without a diagnosis of Orthostatic Hypotension and a control group of healthy elderly non-fallers. We hypothesized that elderly persons with Orthostatic Hypotension are falling purely as a consequence of their vascular abnormalities and are not falling for the same reasons as regular
