Post-tonsillectomy taste dysfunction: Myth or reality?

Lingual branches of the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN Ⅸ) are at risk of injury during tonsillectomy due to their proximity to the muscle layer of the palatine tonsillar bed. However, it is unclear how often this common surgery leads to taste disturbances. We conducted a literature search using PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, PsychInfo, and Ovid Medline to evaluate the available literature on post-tonsillectomy taste disorders. Studies denoting self-reported dysfunction, as well as those employing quantitative testing, i.e., chemogustometry and electrogustometry, were identified.

Taste sensitivity in anorexia nervosa: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: There is evidence for altered processing of taste in anorexia nervosa, particularly in the areas of reward processing and hedonic sensitivity. However, research on whether people with anorexia nervosa identify taste stimuli accurately, known as taste sensitivity, has yielded mixed findings. The objective of this study was to synthesize the literature on taste sensitivity in this disorder to provide a basis for future discussion on whether altered taste sensitivity may be also implicated in wider atypical taste processing in anorexia. METHOD: Electronic databases were searched syste

Sense of taste in patients after cochlear implantation-preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Taste is the leading sense in how we determine the quality of consumed food. Proper gustatory sensation largely determines the well-being and health of an organism, and this affects their quality of life. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to estimate the risk of early taste disorders following implantation surgery. METHODS: Twenty patients underwent a taste test before, 1 day after, and 1 month after cochlear implantation. The taste sensations of sweet, sour, salty, and bitter were determined. RESULTS: Statistical analysis showed no significant differences (p > 0.05)

Deficit Symptomatology of Schizophrenia Is Associated with Attenuated Taste Identification: Findings from a Cross-Sectional Study.

Schizophrenia is the subject of many studies. There have been reports of taste disturbances in mental disorders. We found a possible relationship between deficit symptoms of schizophrenia and the dysgeusia of monosodium glutamate (MSG). Dysgeusia is a disorder that distorts the sense of taste. People describe all foods as tasting sweet, sour, bitter, or metallic. We aimed to verify whether the level of MSG taste perception may be related to the severity of deficit symptoms. MSG detection threshold was assessed via sublingual administration of three fluid samples containing MSG or water. The MS

Flavor alterations in cancer treatment: Extrinsic factors as a means of augmentation.

Flavor, comprising taste, smell and somatosensory inputs, is commonly altered in patients undergoing chemotherapy resulting in malnutrition leading to cachexia. A narrative review considered taste and smell alterations associated with malignancies treated using chemotherapy and the various interventions proffered to lessen alterations. Many of the currently used interventions directed towards enhancing intrinsic factors of food appeared ineffective in encouraging intake of adequate nutrition to ward off complications of malnutrition. Counselling is used in some cases with positive results. The

Symptoms of Depression in Patients with Chemosensory Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with chemosensory dysfunction frequently report symptoms of depression. The current study aims to clarify whether the type (smell dysfunction, taste dysfunction, and mixed smell and taste dysfunction), severity, duration, or cause of dysfunction have differential impacts on the symptoms of depression. METHODS: 899 patients with chemosensory disorders and 62 controls were included. Following a structured interview and an otorhinolaryngological examination, subjects underwent olfactory tests (Sniffin' Sticks), gustatory tests (taste sprays) and an assessment of depressive

The taste of neuroinflammation: Molecular mechanisms linking taste sensing to neuroinflammatory responses.

Evidence indicates a critical role of neuroinflammatory response as an underlying pathophysiological process in several central nervous system disorders, including neurodegenerative diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms that trigger neuroinflammatory processes are not fully known. The discovery of bitter taste receptors in regions other than the oral cavity substantially increased research interests on their functional roles in extra-oral tissues. It is now widely accepted that bitter taste receptors, for instance, in the respiratory, intestinal, reproductive and urinary tracts, are cruc

Taste bud homeostasis in health, disease, and aging.

The mammalian taste bud is an onion-shaped epithelial structure with 50-100 tightly packed cells, including taste receptor cells, supporting cells, and basal cells. Taste receptor cells detect nutrients and toxins in the oral cavity and transmit the sensory information to gustatory nerve endings in the buds. Supporting cells may play a role in the clearance of excess neurotransmitters after their release from taste receptor cells. Basal cells are precursor cells that differentiate into mature taste cells. Similar to other epithelial cells, taste cells turn over continuously, with an average li

Plant polyphenols, chemoreception, taste receptors and taste management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Polyphenols display beneficial health effects through chemopreventive actions on numerous chronic diseases including cancers, metabolic disorders, reproductive disorders and eating behaviour disorders. According to the principle of chemoreception, polyphenols bind cellular targets capable of accepting their stereochemistry, namely metabolizing enzymes and protein receptors, including taste receptors. The extraoral expression of taste receptors and their pharmacological interest in terms of novel drug therapies open up new perspectives on the potential use of these compounds

Mouse Mandibular Retromolar Taste Buds Associated With a Mucus Salivary Gland.

We have characterized a recently rediscovered chemosensory structure at the rear of the mandibular mucosa in the mouse oral cavity originally reported in the 1980s. This consists of unorganized taste buds, not contained within troughs, associated with the ducts of an underlying minor salivary gland. Using whole-mount preparations of transgenic mice expressing green fluorescent protein under the promoter of taste-signaling-specific genes, we determined that the structure contains taste bud clusters and salivary gland orifices at the rear of each mandible, distal to the last molar and anterior t

Toxic effects on gustatory function.

A large number of substances and disease processes may impact the sense of taste. Toxic substances may cause taste dysfunction from their effects on the gustatory system from the salivary gland, to the taste bud, to the central neural pathways. A number of external toxins, including industrial compounds, tobacco, and alcohol, may adversely affect taste, most commonly through local effects in the oral cavity. Blood-borne toxins, such as medications and those present in autoimmune and other systemic disorders (e.g. renal or liver failure), have access to all parts of the gustatory system, and th

Role of saliva in the maintenance of taste sensitivity.

Saliva is the principal fluid component of the external environment of the taste receptor cells and, as such, could play a role in taste sensitivity. Its main role includes transport of taste substances to and protection of the taste receptor. In the initial process of taste perception, saliva acts as a solvent for taste substances; salivary water dissolves taste substances, and the latter diffuse to the taste receptor sites. During this process, some salivary constituents chemically interact with taste substances. For example, salivary buffers (e.g., bicarbonate ions) decrease the concentrati

Hypnosis for Antineoplastic-Related Taste Disturbance in a Patient With Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Taste disturbances are prominent side effects of antineoplastic medications and contribute to morbidity and quality-of-life impairment. Few treatment options are available for antineoplastic-related taste disorders. Hypnosis has been found to be effective for a variety of symptoms in the cancer setting, including insomnia, pain, mood disorders and anxiety. Numerous somatosensory perceptual changes have been observed with hypnosis, including perception of tactile stimuli and color. Here, we report a case of a 74-year-old woman with recurrent metastatic breast cancer presenting with an 18-month

The bacterial species profiles of the lingual and salivary microbiota differ with basic tastes sensitivity in human.

Taste perception is crucial and impairments, which can be linked to pathologies, can lead to eating disorders. It is triggered by taste compounds stimulating receptors located on the tongue. However, the tongue is covered by a film containing saliva and microorganisms suspected to modulate the taste receptor environment. The present study aimed to elucidate the links between taste sensitivity (sweetness, sourness, bitterness, saltiness, umami) and the salivary as well as the tongue microbiota using shotgun metagenomics. 109 bacterial species were correlated with at least one taste. Not Only COVID-19: Involvement of Multiple Chemosensory Systems in Human Diseases.

Chemosensory systems are deemed marginal in human pathology. In appraising their role, we aim at suggesting a paradigm shift based on the available clinical and experimental data that will be discussed. Taste and olfaction are polymodal sensory systems, providing inputs to many brain structures that regulate crucial visceral functions, including metabolism but also endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, and immune systems. Moreover, other visceral chemosensory systems monitor different essential chemical parameters of "milieu intérieur," transmitting their data to the brain areas receiving ta

Taste dysfunction in patients receiving radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Taste loss is a major cause of morbidity in patients undergoing head and neck irradiation. METHODS: In a prospective study, 51 patients undergoing radical head and neck irradiation at the Tokyo University Hospital were assessed for taste loss. Taste ability was measured by the taste threshold for the four basic tastes (sweet, sour, salt, and bitter qualities) plus another taste of "umami" quality using a filter-paper-disc method in patients before, during, and after radiotherapy (RT). RESULTS: All tastes declined on the fifth week after the start of RT and improved on the 11th we

Taste Receptors Function as Nutrient Sensors in Pancreatic Islets: A Potential Therapeutic Target for Diabetes.

Glucose, amino acids, and free fatty acids are critical nutrients participating in stimulating or regulating the hormone secretion of islets. These nutrients are believed to be metabolized by pancreatic endocrine cells to function. However, recent evidence suggests that taste receptors, which play key roles in the oral cavity to sense glucose (sweet taste), amino acids (umami taste), and free fatty acids (fatty taste), are expressed in pancreatic islet cells and may act to sense these nutrients to regulate pancreatic hormone secretion, including insulin and glucagon. Disorders in these taste r

Interventions for managing taste disturbances.

BACKGROUND: The sense of taste is very much essential to the overall health of an individual. It is a necessary component to enjoy one's food, which in turn provides nutrition to an individual. Any disturbance in taste perception can hamper quality of life in such patients by influencing their appetite, body weight and psychological well-being. Taste disorders have been treated using different modalities of treatment and there is no consensus for the best intervention. Hence this Cochrane Review was undertaken. This is an update of the Cochrane Review first published in November 2014. OBJECTI
