A 67-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of bleeding tendency and high fever. Metastases to the subcutaneous scrotum are extremely rare. Here, we report a 78-year-old man who presented with pain to the scrotum and inguinal area. Two years ago, he underwent total gastrectomy for gastric cancer. The pain was attributed to increased scrotal wall thickness. OBJECTIVE: We examined the completion rate, safety, and adverse events in patients with T2N0 glottic carcinoma who received chemoradiotherapy with S-1 (tegafur-gimeracil-oteracil potassium).
METHODS: In T2N0 glottic carcinoma patients, we retrospectively compared the local control rate and outpatient therapy completion rate between 20 patients who received radiotherapy plus S-1 (S-1 group) and 20 who received radiotherapy alone (RT group).
RESULTS: Local recurrence was not detected in any of the 20 subjects from the S-1 group, whereas local recurrence was found in 4 of the 20 subjects (20%)

Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) is a key enzyme in the metabolic catabolism of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and its derivatives (capecitabine and tegafur). Some fluoropyrimidines are considered to be metabolized in liver microsomes. The present study was designed to assess the effect of chronic liver dysfunction on the antineoplastic activity of fluoropyrimidines. One hundred and twenty-three patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and 4 patients with hepatoblastoma were treated with systemic chemotherapy, and then one patient with hepatocellular carcinoma and 4 patients with hepatoblastoma underwent hepatectomy. Preoperative chemotherapy was evaluated to have been successful in the patient with hepatocellular carcinoma and 3 of the 4 patients with hepatoblastoma. In the former, marked tumor necrosis was observed in the resected specimen. In the latter, a rapid decrease of serum AFP level (T1/2 was less than 13 days) was observed in the effective cases.

BACKGROUND/AIM: To evaluate the outcomes of induction chemotherapy and/or external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) followed by brachytherapy (BT) in patients with tongue cancer who had a waiting period for BT or a large tumor that was not suitable for BT.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: As an induction therapy, chemotherapy with tegafur/gimeracil/oteracil (S-1), EBRT or both S-1 chemotherapy and EBRT was prescribed. We report a long-term survivor of colorectal cancer who underwent aggressive, frequent resection for peritoneal recurrences. A 58-year-old woman was diagnosed with descending colon cancer.
