Bulimia nervosa in atypical depression: the mediating role of cyclothymic temperament.

OBJECTIVE: Recent data indicate significant clinical, biological, and treatment response overlap between eating and bipolar disorders, especially when soft symptoms of either spectrum disorders are considered. The aim of the present analyses is to evaluate the lifetime prevalence of bulimia nervosa (BN) in patients with atypical depression (AD) and to delineate any demographic, clinical, personality or temperamental factors that may characterize this subgroup. METHOD: We examined in a semi-structured format 107 consecutive patients who met DSM-IV criteria for major depressive episode with aty

Integrating research on temperament and childhood psychopathology: its pitfalls and promise.

This article discusses the promise and problems associated with integrating research on child temperament and research on childhood psychopathology. Unfortunately, these 2 extensive and influential areas of psychological research with children have largely been conducted independently of each other. This article provides a summary of the disciplinary, conceptual, and methodological issues that have hampered an integration of these 2 important bodies of research. It also highlights the great promise that such an integration could have for advancing causal theories of childhood disorders and for

Anxiety sensitivity profile: dimensional structure and relationship with temperament and character.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety sensitivity (AS), the belief that bodily sensations have harmful consequences, is a reliable predictor of panic attacks in both clinical and nonclinical populations. Recently, a new measure of AS has been proposed. The AS profile (ASP) was designed to be a more comprehensive measure of AS, and to be more suitable for the measurement of different AS dimensions. Preliminary evidence (college student sample) suggests that the ASP has 4 dimensions. In the present study, the dimensional structure of the ASP was further investigated, as well as its relationship with temperament a

Temperament Profiles and Their Association With Stuttering-Related Outcomes in a Clinical Cohort.

PURPOSE: Previous research on temperament in developmental stuttering has primarily treated emotional reactivity and self-regulation as separate constructs. Examining their interaction is likely to yield more comprehensive insights into their joint influence on stuttering-related outcomes. Therefore, this study examined how the interplay between emotional reactivity and self-regulation is reflected in differences in stuttering severity, speech attitude, levels of anxiety and depression, and the impact of stuttering. METHOD: A total of 322 younger (ages 3-8 years) and 468 older children (ages

Use of the Temperament and Character Inventory to describe the effectiveness of Gestalt therapy.

BACKGROUND: Gestalt therapy (GT) is a dynamic, integrative, embodied approach that addresses human existence as a fundamentally relational modality, in which the experience of the self is situated in a dynamic organism-environment field. Assessments of GT are scarce, often avoided, and generally qualitative. The Therapy Gestalt TCI (THEGETCI) study aimed to show that the modifiable character dimensions of the 125-item Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI-125), as well as other personality temperament dimensions and emotional measures, change after a GT program. METHODS: A psychotherapeuti

The structure of pathological personality traits and temperament in a Persian community sample.

The present study examined the extent to which the currently established factor structure of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5; Krueger et al., 2013) generalizes to a large Persian community sample, as well as relations between the resulting PID-5 factors and two temperament measures. Cross-sectional data came from 946 adults (65% female) from western Iran. With the use of exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) with target rotation, we found factor loadings that showed fairly similar patterns to those found in two previous meta-analytic PID-5 studies with predominantly North

Validation of the Approach-Avoidance Temperament Questionnaire in Individuals with Anxiety and Depression.

The Approach-Avoidance Temperament Questionnaire (ATQ) is a well-established measure assessing heightened sensitivity and reactivity to reward/positive stimuli (approach temperament) and to punishment/negative stimuli (avoidance temperament). These basic dimensions of personality are believed to be important for understanding the etiology and maintenance of anxiety and depressive disorders. Despite the ATQ's potential utility in clinical psychology research, its psychometric properties and factor structure have yet to be examined in a psychiatric sample. The aims of the present study were to 1

The influence of temperament and perinatal factors on language development: a longitudinal study.

Early language development is characterized by large individual variation. Several factors were proposed to contribute to individual pathways of language acquisition in infancy and childhood. One of the biologically based explaining factors is temperament, however, the exact contributions and the timing of the effects merits further research. Pre-term status, infant sex, and environmental factors such as maternal education and maternal language are also involved. Our study aimed to investigate the longitudinal relationship between infant temperament and early language development, also conside

Association between affective temperaments and severe coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Affective temperaments are regarded as subclinical manifestations of major mood disorders and cumulating evidence suggest their role in cardiovascular (CV) pathology. We wished to analyze associations between affective temperaments and severe coronary artery disease (CAD), as assessed by coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). METHODS: 225 consecutive patients referred to CCTA due to suspected CAD were included. Medical history and demographic parameters were recorded and all patients completed the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestion

The Characteristics of Mood Polarity, Temperament, and Suicide Risk in Adult ADHD.

The present study was designed to shed light on a topic rarely explored and to suggest possible ways to detect risk factors for the presence of suicidal ideation and behaviors in a sample of adult patients with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This study also explored the association between ADHD, affective temperaments, the presence of hypomania symptoms, and suicide risk. We hypothesized that (compared to healthy controls) (1) patients with adult ADHD would report more negative affective temperaments and more hypomania symptoms and (2) that they would have a higher suicide ri

Inhibited Temperament and Hippocampal Volume in Offspring of Parents with Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have suggested that inhibited temperament may be associated with an increased risk for developing anxiety or mood disorder, including bipolar disorder. However, the neurobiological basis for this increased risk is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine temperament in symptomatic and asymptomatic child offspring of parents with bipolar disorder (OBD) and to investigate whether inhibited temperament is associated with aberrant hippocampal volumes compared with healthy control (HC) youth. METHODS: The OBD group consisted of 45 youth, 24 of whom had current psychi

Personality in women with endometriosis: temperament and character dimensions and pelvic pain.

STUDY QUESTION: Is pelvic pain due to endometriosis associated with temperament and character dimensions? SUMMARY ANSWER: Women with endometriosis and pelvic pain do not clearly exhibit a specific personality profile; however, personality is associated with pelvic pain perception. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: There is research evidence suggesting that endometriosis patients with pelvic pain are more likely to present psychological disruption. Little is known about the association between subjective factors, such as personality traits, and pelvic pain. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: This cross-sect

Differences in temperament and character dimensions in adolescents with various conduct disorders.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Adolescence is characterized both by a large developmental potential and by an increased risk for emergence of different forms of psychopathology. International classifications of mental disorders recognize the psychopathology of adolescence at the age of 15−18 through the categories of conduct disorders and some forms of addiction: chemical and non-chemical. The aim of this research was to analyse the personality structure among four groups of adolescents manifesting different types of conduct disorder based on Cloninger’s Psychobiological theory of personality. METHODS: The

The effect of temperament on the treatment adherence of bipolar disorder type I.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Treatment adherence is one of the most important factors that may determine treatment response in patients with bipolar disorders (BD). Many factors have been described to be associated with treatment adherence in BD. Temperament that can influence the course of BD will have an impact on treatment adherence. The aim of this study is to investigate temperament effect on treatment adherence in euthymic patients with BD-I. METHODS: Eighty patients with BD-I participated in the study. A psychiatrist used the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis-I Disorders to determi

A three-year longitudinal study of affective temperaments and risk for psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Affective temperaments are presumed to underlie bipolar psychopathology. The TEMPS-A has been widely used to assess affective temperaments in clinical and non-clinical samples. Cross-sectional research supports the association of affective temperaments and mood psychopathology; however, longitudinal research examining risk for the development of bipolar disorders is lacking. The present study examined the predictive validity of affective temperaments, using the TEMPS-A, at a three-year follow-up assessment. METHODS: The study interviewed 112 participants (77% of the original sampl
