The wandering spider, Phoneutria depilata, is one of Colombia's most active nocturnal arthropod predators of vertebrates and invertebrates. Its venom has been a relevant subject of study in the last two decades. However, the scarcity of transcriptomic data for the species limits our knowledge of the distinct components present in its venom for linking the mainly neurotoxic effects of the spider venom to a particular molecular target. The transcriptome of the P. depilata venom gland was analyzed to understand the effect of different diets or sex and the impact of these variables on the composit

Spätzle family proteins activate the Toll pathway and induce antimicrobial peptide (AMP) production against microbial infections. However, the functional importance of Tmspätzle4 (TmSpz4) in the immune response of Tenebrio molitor has not been reported. Therefore, here, we have identified and functionally characterized the role of TmSpz4 against bacterial and fungal infections. We showed that TmSpz4 expression was significantly induced in hemocytes at 6 h post-injection with Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. TmSpz4 knock-down significantly reduced larval survival a

The organic anion salicylate is a plant secondary metabolite that protects plants against phytophagous insects. In this study, a combination of salicylate-selective microelectrodes and a radioisotope tracer technique was used to study the transepithelial transport of salicylate by the Malpighian tubules of 10 species of insects from five orders. Our results show that salicylate is transported into the lumen of the Malpighian tubules in all the species evaluated, except Rhodnius prolixus. The transepithelial transport of salicylate by the Malpighian tubules of Drosophila simulans, Drosophila er

At the end of each instar, insects shed their old cuticle by performing the stereotyped ecdysis behavior. In the month, Manduca sexta, larval ecdysis is accompanied by increases in intracellular cyclic 3', 5'-guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in a small network of 50 peptidergic neurons within the ventral central nervous system (CNS). Studies on a variety of insects show that this cGMP response has been associated with ecdysis throughout most of insect evolution. In the mealbeetle (Tenebrio, Coleoptera) and the mosquito (Aedes, Diptera), all 50 neurons showed increases in cGMP immunoreactivity (-

Polystyrene (PS), particularly expanded polystyrene (EPS), is an environmentally significant commodity polymer that contributes substantially to secondary microplastic and nanoplastic pollution through environmental weathering and fragmentation. During aging, PS undergoes nano-scale physicochemical transformations, including chain scission, surface oxidation, and the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups, which profoundly influence its environmental fate, microbial colonization, and biodegradation behavior. Conventional remediation technologies remain energy-intensive and often fail

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Inflammation and ferroptosis are implicated in various diseases and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) have been linked with these disorders. Recently, many edible insects, such as Gryllus bimaculatus, Protaetia brevitarsis larvae (PB) and Tenebrio molitor larvae, have been recommended as alternative foods because they contain lots of nutritional sources. In this study, we explored the potential of PB extract in preventing LPS-induced inflammation and ferroptosis in Hep3B cells.
MATERIALS/METHODS: PB powder was extracted using 70% ethanol and applied to Hep3B cells. Co-treatment

This study aimed to determine the effects of dietary inclusion of Tenebrio molitor larvae (yellow worms) meal (TM) on meagre fish (Argyrosomus regius) whole-body fatty acids (FA) profile and hepatic and intestine oxidative status. For that purpose, fish were fed for 9 weeks a fishmeal-based diet (control) or diets including 10%, 20%, or 30% TM. With the increase in dietary TM level, whole-body oleic acid, linoleic acid, monounsaturated FA, and n-6 polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) increased while saturated FA (SFA), n-3 PUFA, n-3 long chain-PUFA, SFA:PUFA ratio, n3:n6 ratio, and FA retention decreased

The encapsulation of entomopathogenic fungi in polysaccharide matrices is a promising green strategy for protecting them from environmental stressors such as UV radiation and high temperatures (>35 °C). This study presents a novel formulation for encapsulating Beauveria bassiana conidia within a sodium carboxymethylcellulose matrix cross-linked with Al3+ or Fe3+. Beads produced via ionic gelation were subjected to air-drying or freeze-drying and characterized using SEM-EDX, FT-IR, TGA, and XRD. Freeze-dried beads were larger and exhibited a higher swelling capacity than their air-dried counter

Interactions between adult Hymenolepis diminuta and rat C-reactive protein (CRP) were investigated in vivo and in vitro. Using an ELISA technique, serum levels of CRP were monitored in rats infected with 100 cysticercoids. Although infection increased the level of this protein in the early stages of parasitization, the increase was not significant until 35 days post-infection (p.i.). Secondary infections did not enhance the response. When H. diminuta was cultured in the presence of CRP, reduced worm motility and opaque areas were observed and electron microscopical studies revealed shedding of

Filamentous fungi generate chemical diversity through several evolutionary strategies, including the elaboration of conserved biosynthetic intermediates into structurally distinct secondary metabolites. Emodin and its corresponding anthrone are central intermediates in fungal aromatic polyketide metabolism, yet the enzymatic logic that remodels these precursors into more complex scaffolds remains incompletely understood. To investigate this process, we examined an infection-responsive non-reducing polyketide synthase biosynthetic gene cluster (barc) from the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium
