INTRODUCTION: Active duty U.S. Military service members experience rates of anterior shoulder instability up to twenty times greater than the general population. Arthroscopic Bankart repair is the primary treatment for anterior shoulder instability without bone loss, though coexistent pathology involving the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) or biceps labral complex (BLC) may necessitate additional intervention. Biceps tenodesis (BT) is frequently employed in such cases. Although BT has been studied extensively in the context of superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) tears and rotato

For irreparable posterior superior rotator cuff tears (IPSRCTs), techniques other than reverse shoulder arthroplasty and tendon transfer are still under research; among these, reusing the long head of the biceps (LHB) is noteworthy. Various techniques of LHB reuse have been reported and can be divided into 3 biomechanical categories: restoration of the force chain of the rotator cuff, augmentation of the superior capsule, and combined force-chain restoration and superior capsule augmentation, among which in situ biceps tenodesis may be the simplest. LHB reuse for IPSRCTs is always combined wit

BACKGROUND: Long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) tenodesis is predominantly performed for 2 reasons: anterior shoulder pain (ASP) or structural reasons (partial tear, dislocation).
METHODS: Between 2006 and 2014, all cases of primary LHBT tenodesis performed at an integrated health care system were retrospectively reviewed. Complications were analyzed by tenodesis location (below or out of the groove [OOG] vs leaving tendon in the groove [ITG]), fixation method (soft tissue vs implant), and indication (preoperative ASP vs structural).
RESULTS: Among 1526 shoulders, persistent ASP did not di

Chronic scapholunate ligament (SL) injury is a common disorder affecting the wrist. Despite advances in surgical techniques used to treat this injury, SL gap re-emergence may occur postoperatively. This paper presents an investigation into the performance of the Corella, schapolunate axis (SLAM), and modified Brunelli tenodesis (MBT) surgical reconstruction techniques used to treat scapholunate instability. Finite element (FE) models were used to undertake virtual surgery, and the resulting scapholunate (SL) gap and angle obtained using the 3 techniques were compared. The Corella technique was

BACKGROUND: The incidence and arthroscopic treatment of superior labral anterior posterior (SLAP) tears have increased over the past decade. Recent evidence has identified factors associated with poor outcomes, including age, overhead activity, and concomitant rotator cuff tears. Biceps tenodesis has also been suggested as an alternative treatment to repair. Moreover, there are no studies demonstrating effective treatment strategies for failed type II SLAP repairs.
PURPOSE: To prospectively evaluate the surgical outcomes of biceps tenodesis for patients who undergo elected revision surgery af

PURPOSE: Arthroscopic biceps tenodesis surgery is an important procedure for the correction of biceps tendonitis or in conjunction with rotator cuff repair with biceps symptoms. Recent trends have developed in placing the biceps tendon lower in the bicipital groove for a tenodesis. However, a more distal biceps tenodesis location is technically challenging when carried out arthroscopically with standard posterior and lateral portals. We aimed to establish the safety of a low-anterolateral portal location for direct access to the lowest aspect of the bicipital groove.
METHODS: An anatomical st

BACKGROUND: When closed reduction of a developmental dislocation of the hip fails, some form of open reduction is required. In recent years, the many advantages of the medial approach open reduction have been emphasized. However, there have been suggestions that the rate of growth disturbance in the proximal femur and the requirement for secondary surgical procedures may be higher with this route than with others. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of a modified medial approach open reduction, in which the stability of the reduction is enhanced by resection of

Isolated posttraumatic dorsal subluxation of the distal ulna was surgically treated in eight patients by reduction of the subluxation and by a tenodesing procedure that used a tendon slip of flexor carpi ulnaris. The repair also imbricated the dorsal radioulnar ligament upon itself, and the forearm was secured in supination by a Kirschner wire. All patients had improved stability of the distal radioulnar joint: five had complete and three had satisfactory relief of pain. Slight residual joint laxity was noted in three patients and mild residual limitation of pronation in all, although the pati

Seven children aged 3.0 to 5.8 years underwent bilateral simultaneous transfer of the anterior tibial muscle to the os calcis combined with Achilles tenodesis. All patients underwent pre- and postoperative gait analysis. Results indicated decreased knee flexion in stance and decreased ankle dorsiflexion in stance resulting in a more upright posture in all patients. Electromyography revealed prolongation of firing time in both stance and swing phase of the gait cycle. Polypropylene ankle-foot orthoses, used to protect the transfers in the postoperative period, improved step length, single limb

There are two types of genu recurvatum: one with bone deformity, which responds well to osteotomy, and one with posterior soft-tissue laxity with secondary bone changes. To date, no reliable treatment short of arthrodesis has been effective for the second type. An operation for this type of genu recurvatum (post-poliomyelitic) is described: a soft-tissue reconstruction of the lax tissues posterior to the knee joint done in three layers. The operation was done on sixteen knees in fourteen patients, with an average follow-up of four years and three months. The average recurvatum before surgery w

BACKGROUND: An individual experiencing tetraplegia faces functional limitations due to impaired hand function. The use of an affordable tenodesis wrist-hand orthosis (WHO) can enable finger flexion with active wrist extension, thereby enhancing the three-jaw chuck grasp and overall hand functionality.
OBJECTIVES: To assess hand function and satisfaction in patients with tetraplegia using a modified tenodesis wrist-hand orthosis (WHO), utilizing the Duruöz Hand Index (DHI) and the Orthotics and Prosthetics User Survey (OPUS) satisfaction with device and services subscales.
METHODOLOGY: The st

Overhead throwing is a common causative factor in disorders of the proximal biceps in athletes. In recent years, arthroscopic repair of unstable superior labral tears or biceps tendonitis involving the long head of the biceps tendon anchor has become the standard of care. However, in some cases, superior labrum anterior-posterior (SLAP) repair requires additional evaluation and even revision surgery, which contributes to patient dissatisfaction. Differentiating overall biceps tendonitis from superior labral tears alone can be a challenge. More recently, biceps tenodesis has been suggested as a

BACKGROUND: The superiority of tenotomy vs. tenodesis for surgery on lesions of the long head of the biceps brachii tendon is still under debate. Indeed, high-quality evidence is lacking, mainly because of methodological problems, such as retrospective design, population sample size or lack of patient randomization.
METHODS/DESIGN: The study will be a two-center, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial to compare patients treated with biceps tenotomy or tenodesis for lesions of the long head of the biceps brachii tendon over a 2-year follow-up period. The study participants will be 128 adu

A displaced Long Head of Biceps (LHB) tendon is commonly encountered in association with subscapularis rotator cuff tears. Management options for the displaced tendon consist of tenotomy, tenodesis or relocation with reconstruction of the biceps pulley. We present 16 patients in whom LHB relocation and reconstruction of the biceps pulley, was performed in association with subscapularis rotator cuff repair. During follow-up ultrasound scanning was used to assess LHB mobility and location. Eight of the 16 patients had a static LHB tendon at an average follow-up of 26 months. Four of the 6 patien

BACKGROUND: Pathologies of the long head of the biceps (LHB) tendon are frequently seen as concomitant pathologies during arthroscopic surgery for rotator cuff injuries or the labroligamentous complex of the shoulder. Currently, there are two treatment options: Tenotomy is quick and easy to perform with low complications rates, but has limited functional results, especially in demanding patients; tenodesis of the tendon has shown beneficial cosmetic and functional results, but usually requires an implant for tendon-to-bone attachment and, therefore, carries the risk of implant-related complica

BACKGROUND: The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a major sagittal plane stabilizer of the knee joint. Even if anterior laxity can be brought under control by utilizing modern surgical techniques, internal rotational instability may not always be controlled adequately. Various surgical techniques are used to prevent this coronal or rotational instability, such as lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET). Despite an abundance of articles in recent decades discussing LET in ACL reconstruction, no definitive indicators for extra-articular tenodesis have been described in the literature.

PURPOSE: We investigated the outcomes of an original functional reconstruction procedure for ulnar drift (UD) with extensor tendon subluxation due to rheumatoid arthritis.
METHODS: From 2018 to 2022, reconstruction was performed in 10 patients (31 fingers), with UD due to rheumatoid arthritis and a minimum of 2-year follow-up. The mean age was 57 years, and the mean follow-up period was 4.5 years. Ulnar drift was assessed using the Fearnley classification and included 17 stage 1 cases and 14 stage 2 fingers. A half-slip tendon was created just above the metacarpal head. An anchor was driven i
