Incidence of spontaneous neoplasms in F344 rats throughout the natural life-span.

The age-related incidence of spontaneously occurring neoplasms and degenerative diseases in the F344 inbred rat strain was established from the histologic examination of tissues from 160 male and 192 female rats kept throughout their natural life-span. The most common neoplasms were leukemias (25%), mammary tumors (females, 40.6%; males, 23.1%), pituitary adenomas (females, 35.9%; males, 23.8%), and testicular interstitial cell tumors (males, 85%). Various less common neoplasms were observed: thyroid interstitial cell tumors, adrenocortical adenomas, carcinomas of the genitourinary tract, repr

Adult-type granulosa cell tumor of the testis: A case report and review of the literature.

Granulosa cell tumors (GCTs) of the testicle are a rare subtype of sex cord stromal tumors which usually present with painless testicular swelling. The histology of an adult testicular GCT often resembles normal granulosa cell tissue morphology, with similar immunohistochemical staining pattern such as positivity for steroidogenic factor 1 (SF1), calretinin, and inhibin A.4,5 We present a case of a 39-year-old male with an adult GCT of the testicle who underwent successful unilateral orchiectomy. This case adds to the body of literature and furthers our understanding of tumor histopathology, t

Seminoma in a 31-year-old patient on long-term growth hormone therapy.

We describe a Caucasian male patient aged 31, who was referred to the Institute of Reproductive Medicine because of infertility and androgen deficiency and in whom we incidentally diagnosed a unilateral testicular tumor. The patient had received growth hormone (GH) since the age of 8 years. One case presenting with testicular neoplasm under growth hormone substitution has been described previously. In conclusion, it cannot be ruled out that GH treatment may be involved in the pathogenesis of germ cell tumor development. Special care should be exercised when patients with a history of maldescen

Nodular Maturation of the Testis: A Non-neoplastic Lesion of Boys That May Present as a Mass on Clinical and Ultrasound Examination.

We have encountered a lesion of the pediatric testis, termed "nodular maturation," that clinically mimics a testicular neoplasm causing ultrasound abnormalities that may lead to surgical excision. To our knowledge, it has only been described anecdotally in textbooks without a series or description in the literature. We, therefore, report 8 cases in pediatric patients emphasizing the clinical presentation, ultrasound findings, histologic features, and clinical follow-up information. Patients ranged in age from 5 to 11 years (mean: 7.9 y). Precocious puberty was identified in 1 patient as isolat

Retroperitoneal extension of massive ulcerated testicular seminoma through the inguinal canal: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Testicular cancers represent about 5% of all urological malignancies and 1-1.5% of all male neoplasms. Most of the testicular cancers are localized (68%) at diagnosis. Bulky masses in the scrotum are rare. We present a rare case of bulky testicular cancer with retroperitoneal spread through the inguinal canal. CASE REPORT: A 44-year-old man came to the emergency department referring weakness and the presence of a scrotal mass. At physical examination, a voluminous mass was found, with necrotic phenomena within the scrotum. Abdomen was tense and sore. Abdominal CT scan revealed a

[Intrascrotal inflammatory pseudotumor (a case report)].

We report one case of intrascrotal inflammatory tumour in a 12 year-old boy. The clinical symptomatology was a tumoral rise in the right scrotal volume. The rate of biological markers was normal. A testicular neoplasm was highly suspected in scrotal ultrasound and CT scan. A radical orchidectomy was accomplished and histological examination revealed a peritesticular inflammatory tumor without neoplasm. The clinical and imaging findings of the tumor are discussed.

Metastatic Large Cell Calcifying Sertoli Cell Tumor: A Case Report, Diagnostic Pitfalls, and Literature Review.

Large cell calcifying Sertoli cell tumor (LCCSCT) is a rare testicular neoplasm, with only a small subset of clinically malignant tumors. We report a diagnostically challenging, clinically and histologically malignant LCCSCT in a 37-year-old man with a misleading initial presentation. The patient initially presented with testicular pain and swelling following trauma and was clinically diagnosed with epididymitis and hydrocele. Despite antibiotic therapy, symptoms progressed to include weight loss, night sweats, fever, diffuse pain, and lymphadenopathy. Computed tomography performed 2 months la

Unusual continuous intra-abdominal spread of primary testicular lymphoma along the spermatic cord and gonadal vessels: Report of 2 cases.

Primary testicular lymphoma (PTL) is an uncommon neoplasm (<5% of all testicular tumors). Testicular lymphoma presents with homogeneous mass, hyperintense on T1-weighted images, and iso-to-hypointense on T2-weighted images with strong diffusion restriction and homogeneous contrast enhancement. Seminoma testis, a close differential due to T2 hypointensity and homogeneousity, can be differentiated by its lower diffusion restriction and younger age group. Involvement of spermatic cord and epididymis is rare with seminoma. Intra-abdominal extension along the gonadal vein is not reported. PTL disse

Primary testicular and intraocular lymphomas: two case reports and a review of the literature.

Testicular lymphoma is a rare neoplasm of the testis that is most commonly seen in older patients. It metastasizes preferentially to extranodal sites, including the skin, central nervous system, Waldeyer ring, contralateral testis, and lung. Two case reports of patients with a history of testicular lymphoma who developed involvement of the vitreous and retina are presented. These are interesting cases as the testis, central nervous system, and eye are all immune privileged organs, which may account for occurrence of disease in these sites. Histopathologic examination of diagnostic vitrectomy s

Dentigerous Equine Teratoma in a Stallion: Surgical Management and Clinicopathology.

Teratoma is a rare germ cell testicular cancer composed of cells that are not normally present in the site where it originates. These tumors are rarely described in horses, where they may develop due to cryptorchidism. Teratomas consist of cells originating from different germinal layers, arising from germinal multi-potential cells with differentiation defects, and can simultaneously contain several tissues from two or more embryonic layers. Testicular teratomas are described in horses, cats, dogs, wild boars, bulls, and humans. In the rare descriptions found in literature of testicular terato

[A rare case of acute scrotum. Thrombophlebitis from ectasia of the left pampiniforme plexus].

The acutely painful scrotum may be due to testicular torsion, twisted testicular appendages, twisted spermatic cord or epididymitis. Most rarely it occurs as a result of a testicular trauma, orchitis, idiopathic scrotal edema, idiopathic infarction of testis and vaginalis tunica or testicular neoplasm; a spontaneous thrombosis of the spermatic vein vessels is quite unusual. A rare case of thrombosis of a dilated pampiniform plexus which occurred in a 6 year-old child is reported and its clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment is discussed. The difficulty in making such a diagnosis is st

A Case of Spermatocytic Tumor of Testis.

BACKGROUND: Spermatocytic tumor is a rare type of testicular germ cell tumor, accounting for approximately 1% of all testicular neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old male presented to the hospital with a painless mass in the left testis. Ultrasonography revealed a heterogeneous intratesticular mass with cystic components. Testicular tumor markers were within normal ranges. The patient underwent a left orchiectomy. Pathologically, the tumor was characterized by the presence of medium to large neoplastic cells and small neoplastic cells without sarcomatoid or anaplastic features. Immunohi

Burned-out testicular germ cell tumour presenting as acute inferior vena cava syndrome.

Germ cell tumours (GCT) are the most common testicular neoplasms, seen mainly in young adults. Rarely they can affect extragonadal tissues, either as primary tumours or as metastases, most commonly to retroperitoneal lymph nodes. A 'burned-out' testicular tumour is a metastatic GCT with a relatively occult primary testicular tumour, which has histologically spontaneously regressed. We report a case of a 26-year-old man who presented with an acute history of lower back pain and leg swelling. CT demonstrated a large retroperitoneal soft tissue mass causing right-sided hydronephrosis with inferio

Unusual, benign asymptomatic scrotal masses in children: case reports and review of the literature.

Asymptomatic scrotal masses (ASM) in children constitute an entity of pathologies, ranging from congenital anomalies to neoplasms. Testicular ultrasound is the imaging modality of choice in the evaluation of ASM, although there is extensive overlap between benign and malignant lesions. Five children with ASM of benign origin are presented: 2 boys had extratesticular mass (one paratesticular lipoma and one voluminous sebaceous scrotal cyst); the remaining 3 patients had testicular mass (one supernumerary testis, one intratesticular cyst and one unilateral testicular hypertrophy). Basing on the

Doppler ultrasonography in testicular tumors presenting with acute scrotal pain.

PURPOSE: To determine whether Doppler ultrasonography (US) could be useful in the evaluation of testicular neoplasms presenting with acute scrotal pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined 18 patients with acute scrotal pain using Doppler US. Peak systolic and end-diastolic velocity measurements were performed at first admission and on completion of 1-week proper antibiotic treatment. Data were retrospectively reviewed and compared with findings of a control group of 17 age-matched subjects. RESULTS: Of the 18 patients evaluated, 11 were found to have testicular tumors and 7 testicular inflamm

Testicular torsion and risk factors for orchiectomy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine risk factors for testicular loss due to testicular torsion. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: Medical records of patients aged 1 to 25 years with a principal diagnosis of testicular torsion were extracted from the 1998 Nationwide Inpatient Sample. Population-based rates of testicular torsion and orchiectomy were determined. Logistic regression was used to create a predictive model for orchiectomy. For comparison, medical records of patients aged 1 to 25 years with a principal diagnosis of testicular neoplasm were extracted. RESULTS: The sample comprised 436 participants. The e

Leydig cell tumor of the testis with characteristic contrast patterns of tumor and non-tumorous testicular parenchyma on MRI: a case report.

PURPOSE: Testicular Leydig cell tumor (LCT) is a rare subtype of testicular neoplasms that occurs in the interstitial tissue of testes, accounting for 1-3% of total testicular masses removed annually. We report a case of 70-year-old man diagnosed as testicular LCT. This report demonstrates a testicular LCT with intratumoral and non-tumorous testicular parenchymal enhancement in the affected testis, which should be considered characteristic findings of LCT. METHODS: Ultrasonography showed a hypoechoic mass. On magnetic resonance imaging, the tumor showed low signal intensity comparable to the
