Twist-Densified Collagen-Silver Nanowire Hydrogel Yarns for Conductive, Bioactive Sutures and Smart Textiles.

Tissue-interfaced bioelectronics require fibers that are conductive, strong, and bioactive, properties difficult to combine because conductive fillers that improve percolation tend to disrupt hydrogel networks and bioactivity. Twist densification was recently shown to convert collagen hydrogels into superhelical yarns with tendon-like mechanics. We extend this strategy to conductive composites by incorporating silver nanowires (AgNWs) into collagen hydrogels and co-assembling them into fibers. The completed gel network locks nanowires in place; subsequent twisting and cross-linking induce an a

Towards recycling of textiles: fast detection of contaminated waste fabric by near-infrared spectroscopy.

Since the implementation of EU Waste Framework Directive, which mandates the separate collection of textile waste from 2025 onwards, there has been an increasing need for effective systems for textile waste collection, sorting, and recycling, together with reliable approaches to assess the chemical safety of textile products. The present study explores near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, combined with chemometric tools, proposed as a non-destructive rapid approach to identify the presence of contaminants on textile samples. Representative contaminants were applied to pre-consumer virgin polyeste

Scalable and Healable Gradient Textiles for Multi-Scenario Radiative Cooling via Bicomponent Blow Spinning.

Radiative cooling textiles with spectrally selective surfaces offer a promising energy-efficient approach for sub-ambient cooling of outdoor objects and individuals. However, the spectrally selective mid-infrared emission of these textiles significantly hinders their efficient radiative heat exchange with self-heated objects, thereby posing a significant challenge to their versatile cooling applicability. Herein, we present a bicomponent blow spinning strategy for the production of scalable, ultra-flexible, and healable textiles featuring a tailored dual gradient in both chemical composition a

3D printed PEDOT:PSS-based conducting and patternable eutectogel electrodes for machine learning on textiles.

The proliferation of medical wearables necessitates the development of novel electrodes for cutaneous electrophysiology. In this work, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is combined with a deep eutectic solvent (DES) and polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) to develop printable and biocompatible electrodes for long-term cutaneous electrophysiology recordings. The impact of printing parameters on the conducting properties, morphological characteristics, mechanical stability and biocompatibility of the material were investigated. The optimised eutectogel formula

Bio-Sourced Flame Retardants for Textiles: Where We Are and Where We Are Going.

After the period of halogenated compounds, the period of nano-structured systems, and that of phosphorus (and nitrogen)-based additives (still in progress), following the increasingly demanding circular economy concept, about ten years ago the textile flame retardant world started experiencing the design and exploitation of bio-sourced products. Indeed, since the demonstration of the potential of such bio(macro)molecules as whey proteins, milk proteins (i.e., caseins), and nucleic acids as effective flame retardants, both natural and synthetic fibers and fabrics can take advantage of the avail

Therapeutic Textiles Functionalized with Keratin-Based Particles Encapsulating Terbinafine for the Treatment of Onychomycosis.

Onychomycosis is the most common nail fungal infection worldwide. There are several therapy options available for onychomycosis, such as oral antifungals, topicals, and physical treatments. Terbinafine is in the frontline for the treatment of onychomycosis; however, several adverse effects are associated to its oral administration. In this work, innovative keratin-based carriers encapsulating terbinafine were designed to overcome the drawbacks related to the use this drug. Therapeutic textiles functionalized with keratin-based particles (100% keratin; 80% keratin/20% keratin-PEG) encapsulating

Assessing environmental impact of NOX and SO2 emissions in textiles production with chemical footprint.

Air pollution is a major concern of the new civilized world due to its adverse impact on human health and environment. As typical air pollutants, nitrogen oxide (NOX) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) not only pollute the atmosphere by forming acid rain and particulate matter, but are also harmful to the human respiratory system. Significant emissions of NOX and SO2 in the production phases make the textile industry under enormous environmental pressure. Chemical footprint (ChF) is an effective method for transforming the potential environmental risks of pollutant emissions into an intuitive form of to

A novel comprehensive efficacy test for textiles intended for use in the healthcare setting.

Soft surfaces, including textiles are found throughout healthcare settings. Pathogens can survive for long periods of time on textiles, and can be transferred to and from the skin. Antimicrobial fabrics are used as an engineering control to prevent infection. Efficacy testing standards have limitations, including single microorganism challenges, multiple fabric plies tested, and lengthy contact times. We developed a novel method that better models in-use conditions through testing standardized mixtures of pathogens and normal skin microorganisms, artificial soils, and a 15-min contact time. Re

Mouse model for sensitivity of fluid measurement with textile electrodes.

Heart failure is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, and fluid congestion complicates its management. Conventional home-monitoring methods, such as daily weight measurements, are insufficiently sensitive, while invasive techniques are impractical for routine use. This paper introduces a novel, non-invasive approach using textile-based dry electrodes for bio-impedance spectroscopy to detect subtle changes in thoracic fluid volume in a mouse model. Twenty-three mice underwent controlled fluid infusion into the thoracic cavity following a six-stage protocol. Bio-impedance data were collec

A Smart, Textile-Driven, Soft Exosuit for Spinal Assistance.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are often caused by repetitive lifting, making them a significant concern in occupational health. Although wearable assist devices have become the norm for mitigating the risk of back pain, most spinal assist devices still possess a partially rigid structure that impacts the user's comfort and flexibility. This paper addresses this issue by presenting a smart textile-actuated spine assistance robotic exosuit (SARE), which can conform to the back seamlessly without impeding the user's movement and is incredibly lightweight. To detect strain on the

Nonwoven textile for use in a nanoparticle respiratory deposition sampler.

The nanoparticle respiratory deposition (NRD) sampler is a personal sampler that combines a cyclone, impactor, and a nylon mesh diffusion stage to measure a worker's exposure to nanoparticles. The concentration of titanium in the nylon mesh of the diffusion stage complicates the application of the NRD sampler for assessing exposures to titanium dioxide nanoparticles. This study evaluated commercially available nonwoven textiles for use as an alternative media in the diffusion stage of the NRD sampler. Three textiles were selected as containing little titanium from an initial screening of 11 te
