Serum thyroxine binding globulin (TBG) values were correlated with other thyroid function test results and with the clinical condition in 680 patients. The estimation of serum TBG was helpful in the evaluation of thyroid status only in those patients who were either acutely ill, were taking the contraceptive pill, or were pregnant. Further, the derived index, thyroxine: TBG ratio, proved to be a better diagnostic index than the thyroxine:tri-iodothyronine uptake ratio and in many cases would have avoided the use of more expensive and time-consuming tests.

Measurement of thyrotropin concentration alone as a first-line thyroid-function test fails to indicate hypopituitarism in a number of patients. Using a combination of thyrotropin and thyroxine assays, we analysed 56,000 tests for a population of 471,000 over 12 months. 15 patients with clinically unsuspected hypopituitarism were detected, indicating that the occurrence of hypopituitarism might be underestimated.

Thyroid function was evaluated in patients affected by Fisher-Evans syndrome (FES) and compared to that of patients affected only by autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) and to that of patients affected only by idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The study population consisted of 20 patients with FES, 44 with AIHA and 20 with ITP. All patients were examined for thyroid function abnormalities and thyroid autoantibodies. Abnormal thyroid function test results were observed in 40, 25 and 10% of the patients, respectively. The prevalence of antithyroid antibodies (ATA) in FES was 25%; this is

IMPORTANCE: Maternal hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are risk factors for preterm birth. Milder thyroid function test abnormalities and thyroid autoimmunity are more prevalent, but it remains controversial if these are associated with preterm birth.
OBJECTIVE: To study if maternal thyroid function test abnormalities and thyroid autoimmunity are risk factors for preterm birth.
DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SELECTION: Studies were identified through a search of the Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Google Scholar databases from inception

Calcium gluconate test (Ca ++ 10 mg/kg) was carried, for three hours, in 28 patients with thyrotoxicosis, 6--with hypothyroidism and 8 healthy subjects. Pentagastrin (Peptavlon)--2 microgram/kg/h was applied in 25 patients with thyrotoxicosis, 7 with hypothyroidism and 11 healthy subjects. A slowed down calcemia normalization was observed after calcium gluconate infusion in case of thyrotoxicosis and especially in hypothyroidism. Calcemia in the thyrotoxicosis, with pentagastrin test, is more decreased in thyrotoxicosis as compared with the healthy subjects, whereas in hypothyroidism the decre

BACKGROUND: Thyroid disorders are one of the most common endocrine disorders seen globally. Diagnostic challenge may arise both clinically and biochemically because of the multiple function of thyroid hormones (THs). Request for thyroid function test (TFT s) may be based on clinical impression that may suggest thyroid dysfunction or obvious symptoms and signs that are diagnostic of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study looks at the biochemical patterns of TFTs and the clinical impression of thyroid disorders in a rural tertiary institution. Informa

Various thyroid parameters in liver disease which were morphologically diagnosed were measured, and their relationship to liver function was mainly studied. Serum T4 levels were elevated in acute hepatitis (AH), chronic persistent hepatitis (CPH) and chronic aggressive hepatitis (CAH) compared with in normal controls (C). Serum T3 levels were elevated in CAH and reduced in liver cirrhosis (LC). Serum reverse T3 (rT3) levels were elevated in AH and chronic liver diseases (CLD). T3/T4 ratios decreased in AH, CPH and CAH. RT3/T3 ratios increased in AH and CLD. Serum Free T3 (FT3) levels reduced i

PURPOSE: Evidence of an increased diagnostic pressure on thyroid has emerged over the past decades. This study aimed to provide estimates of a wide spectrum of surveillance indicators for thyroid dysfunctions and diseases in Italy.
METHODS: A population-based study was conducted in North-eastern Italy, including 11.7 million residents (20% of the total Italian population). Prescriptions for TSH testing, neck ultrasound or thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA), surgical procedures, and drugs for hypo- or hyperthyroidism were extracted from regional health databases. BACKGROUND: Post-partum thyroid disease occurs in 50% of anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibody positive women (detected at 16 weeks' gestation) and is characterized by a transient episode of hyper, hypo or hyper-hypothyroidism. In approximately 20% of these women the hypothyroidism is permanent. However, the extent of long-term thyroid dysfunction, possibly mediated by immune attack, in those anti-TPO Ab + ve women who have had only transient or no thyroid dysfunction during the postpartum period is not clear.
OBJECTIVE: We have therefore studied the frequency of iodide organification defect

BACKGROUND: TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone) is a key hormone secreted by the pituitary gland, which controls the production and release of thyroid hormones (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) through a negative feedback mechanism. TSH plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of various thyroid diseases; however, TSH testing may be affected by a variety of factors, leading to inaccurate test results. The main interferents include heterophilic antibodies, thyroid hormone autoantibodies (THAb), and macro-TSH. These interferents may cause TSH test results to be falsely elevated or reduced.

OBJECTIVES: Thyroid dysfunction in pregnancy is associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes to mother and child. Trimester-specific reference intervals for thyroid function tests are not routinely provided by clinical laboratories. In this study, we present first- and second-trimester-specific reference intervals in a US population for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), total thyroxine (T4), and total triiodothyronine (T3) measured on Roche analyzers.
METHODS: We used patient samples from first- and second-trimester prenatal screening. Samples were limited to sing

Correct interpretation of pathology results is a requirement for accurate diagnosis and appropriate patient management. Clinical Pathologists and Scientists are increasingly focusing on providing quality interpretative comments on their reports and these comments are appreciated by clinicians who receive them. Interpretative comments may improve patient outcomes by helping reduce errors in application of the results in patient management. Thyroid function test (TFT) results are one of the areas in clinical chemistry where interpretative commenting is practised by clinical laboratories. We have

Thyroid function test (TFT) impairments can be detected in extrathyroidal dysfunction, primarily in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with acute respiratory failure (RF). The aims of this study were to: (i) evaluate TFT impairments in patients with RF, (ii) compare TFT results to a control group without RF and (iii) assess the effects of thyroid dysfunction on clinical outcome and prognosis of RF. The TFT parameters were assessed in 65 patients (65.0 +/- 10.0 years, 49 males) with RF and compared to 18 patients (64.4 +/- 9.8 years, 13 males) with lung disease and no RF (p> 0.05). Ar

The systolic time intervals (LVET, PEP, and ratio LVET/PEP) were determined in 53 patients presenting with signs or symptoms of thyroid dysfunction. Patients with clinical evidence of congestive heart failure, with arterial hypertension or old myocardial infarction, and patients receiving cardioactive drugs, were excluded from the study. Thyroid function was evaluated by means of T3-RIA, serum thyroxin and TRH stimulation test.

The T(4)-free thyroxine index was used as the thyroid function test of first choice in a district general hospital for one year. Ninety-two patients were assessed both initially and at follow up by a single physician. The index agreed with clinical assessment in 69 out of 74 patients in whom diagnosis was unequivocal. There was initial doubt about thyroid status in 14 patients; after re-assessment the index agreed with status in seven cases, in three cases there is still some uncertainty, whilst the index was at variance with clinical status in four patients. Some possible causes of discrepanc

BACKGROUND: Reference intervals are affected by different factors such as lifestyle, ethnicity, age/developmental stage, gender, nutrition and other environmental factors (Clin Biochem Rev: 29,2008). Therefore, it is obvious that it should be established for every population in different regions even within a country. Then the aim of this study is to establish population specific reference intervals of thyroid stimulating hormone, free thyroxine and free triidothyronine levels of cord blood.
RESULTS: One hundred twenty three cord blood samples collected from the umbilical cord of newborns wer
