Effect of moxidectin against natural infestation of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus (Acarina: Ixodidae) in the Mexican tropics.

The study was divided in to two trials and carried out in a ranch in eastern Yucatan state, Mexico. In the first trial, two groups of 15 BostaurusxBosindicus heifers, 6-12 month of age and naturally infested with Boophilus microplus ticks were used. Heifers in Group 1 were treated with a 1% injectable formulation of moxidectin at the dose of 0.20mg/kg body weight by subcutaneous injection. The other group remained as untreated controls. Number of immature and engorging female ticks were assessed on days 0, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 post-treatment (PT). The efficacy of moxidectin on adult ticks from

Antibody and blood leukocyte response in Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille, 1806) tick-infested dogs and guinea pigs.

The dog is considered to be the natural host of Rhipicephalus sanguineus and is unable to develop appreciable resistance even after repeated feedings. The guinea pig develops strong resistance after one infestation with adult ticks. Antibody (IgG) titres against tick salivary gland antigens (SGAs) and blood leukocyte numbers in dogs and guinea pigs undergoing experimental R. sanguineus tick infestations were measured to detect a possible correlation with susceptibility or resistance of hosts. Since infested dogs develop an immediate hypersensitivity reaction to R. sanguineus antigens, total an

Tick species infesting ruminants in Italy: ecological and bio-climatic factors affecting the different regional distribution.

The distribution of tick species able to infest ruminants in Italy is briefly reviewed on the basis of published records and new data obtained in several surveys carried out mainly in northern Italy. The most frequent and abundant tick species found on ruminants throughout Italy are Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor marginatus, the first gradually replacing its association with sheep by the association with wild ruminants. Rhipicephalus bursa was mainly found on cattle while R. turanicus, which is considered one of the most sheep-associated species, was found only on wild boar. Haemaphysalis punc

Distribution and ecology of ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting livestock in Tunisia: an overview of eighth years field collections.

Ticks (Ixodidae) play a significant role as vectors of pathogens of domestic animals in Tunisia. The major losses caused by ticks are related to transmission of protozoan parasites. These include agents of tropical theileriosis and babesiosis in ruminants. Since 1991, we conducted research studies on tick population of livestock in Tunisia. This overview reports a synthesis on tick distribution, their biology and their role as vectors of pathogens in domestic animals, particularly cattle. During the whole period of the study about 15,000 tick specimens were collected from different zones of th

The relationship between tick (Amblyomma hebraeum) infestation and immunity to heartwater (Cowdria ruminantium infection) in calves in Zimbabwe.

The occurrence of endemic stability for heartwater (Cowdria ruminantium infection) is a controversial issue, because the means by which young cattle and other neonatal ruminants become infected and acquire immunity to the disease have never been adequately explained. We conducted a study in a heartwater-endemic area in southeastern Zimbabwe to investigate the relationships between calf immunity to C. ruminatium, infestations of the tick vector Amblyomma hebraeum and dam, colostral and calf antibody titres to C. ruminantium. Two groups of cows (tick-infested and acaricide-treated) were artifici

Effects of tick infestation on Boran (Bos indicus) cattle immunised against theileriosis in an endemic area of Kenya.

Boran (Bos indicus) heifers were immunised by infection with local Theileria parva parva, T p lawrencei and T mutans stocks and treated with parvaquone and later exposed to natural tick and tick-borne disease challenge in the Trans-Mara Division of Kenya. The Theileria species parasites in the challenge were maintained in African buffalo and cattle and the tick vectors were supported by several species of wild Bovidae and domestic livestock present in the area. Thirty immune cattle were observed for 30 weeks while grazing on a ranch in the Trans-Mara Division. Of these, 15 were immersed in tox

A protocol of tick quantification to obtain an indicator of individual resistance to infestation by Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus in Brangus cattle.

Accurate phenotyping of cattle resistance to tick infestation remains a major challenge for its incorporation into breeding programs. In this study, we evaluated a field-based protocol of tick quantification to derive indicators of individual resistance to Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus in Brangus cattle. The protocol combined four repeated tick counts under natural infestation from late winter through late summer with a subsequent artificial tick challenge (approximately 50 bovines per herd) as a validation benchmark. Tick count data from 803 animals across six herds were analyzed using

Impact of climate change on the tick-host-pathogen complex: distribution patterns, disease incidence, and host infestation.

Ticks, being ectothermic, are highly sensitive to climate variables, such as temperature, humidity, and precipitation. Over the past century, fossil fuel use has altered the climate and significantly affected the tick-host-pathogen system. These changes influence tick lifecycles, behavior, vector competency, host dynamics, and pathogen transmission. Consequently, tick-borne diseases (TBDs) have experienced shifts in their geographical range, incidence, and host preferences, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. While climate change drives the emergence of vector-borne diseases, key aspects,

Molecular detection of Coxiella burnetii in ticks infesting wild and domestic animals in the Eastern region of Punjab, Pakistan.

Tick-borne pathogens are significant for human, veterinary, and wildlife health. Coxiella burnetii is an example that is widely distributed across various hosts and can cross species boundaries. In Pakistan, there is a scarcity of data regarding C. burnetii at the intersection of wildlife and livestock. Ticks were collected from ruminants and wildlife from the districts of Kasur, Pakpattan, and Okara in Pakistan. Five tick species totaling 571 ticks were collected, with the following distribution: 56.4% Hyalomma anatolicum, 22.4% Rhipicephalus microplus, 10.5% Hyalomma marginatum, 7.9% Rhipice

Tick infestation on medium-large-sized mammalian hosts: are all equally suitable to Ixodes ricinus adults?

BACKGROUND: In Europe, the generalist tick, Ixodes ricinus, is the main vector of several tick-borne pathogens causing diseases in humans and livestock. Understanding how different species of hosts limit the tick population is crucial for management. In general, larger ectoparasites are expected to select hosts with larger body size. Consistent with this, larval and nymphal I. ricinus can feed on a wide range of different-sized vertebrates, while the adult female stage is expected to rely on a medium-large-sized host for reproduction. However, we still have a limited understanding of whether m

Monthly infestation characteristics of ticks on cattle in Thrace, a Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever-endemic area of Turkey.

The first etiologically confirmed cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in humans were detected in Turkey in 2002. Since then, thousands of cases have been reported from different parts of the country. Hyalomma (Hy.) marginatum is considered the main vector tick of CCHFe in Turkey, and the primary infection route for humans is known to be the tick bite. This study was carried out between January 2013 and December 2014 in Thrace, Turkey, to determine monthly prevalence and intensity of tick infestation in cattle and, ultimately, to predict the related risk of human exposure to ticks a

Molecular prevalence of Babesia bigemina in Rhipicephalus microplus ticks infesting cross-bred cattle of Punjab, India.

Babesiosis is an economically important tick-borne apicomplexan protozoan disease of cattle in tropical and subtropical regions. In the present study, Rhipicephalus microplus engorged female ticks were collected from 135 apparently healthy cattle from different agro-climatic zones of Punjab, India, to investigate the carrier status of Babesia bigemina infection in vector tick by using microscopy and PCR based assays. PCR when applied on DNA extracted from the egg masses harvested from ticks showed 1.48% (2/135) samples as positive, whereas 4.44% (6/135) samples were positive when product of pr

The acaricidal efficacy of peracetic acid and deltamethrin against the fowl tick, Argas persicus, infesting laying hens.

The fowl tick, Argas persicus (Oken), is of veterinary importance as a parasite of poultry and wild birds. The antitick efficacy, in vitro and in vivo, of peracetic acid (PAA) and deltamethrin (DMT) was tested separately against A. persicus through the dipping technique. PAA (0.5 %) was highly efficient against soft tick larvae (A. persicus), resulting in 100 % mortality after 2 min. The lethal concentrations LC(50) and LC(95) were 0.310 and 0.503 %, respectively. The lethal time values LT(50) and LT(95) were 5.34 and 40.00 min, respectively, after treatment with PAA (0.25 %). Two minutes afte

Factors related to cattle infestation level and resistance to acaricides in Boophilus microplus tick populations in New Caledonia.

Boophilus microplus, even in the absence of babesiosis, is a major disease of the cattle in New Caledonia where the particular farming system associates continental European breeds and a tropical climate tempered by the Pacific Ocean. In order to have a better understanding of the factors involved in cattle tick infestation, to decrease the possible wastage and use of chemicals and to increase the lifetime of the acaricides, the veterinary authorities investigated the conditions of the chemical treatments. A survey among 148 cattle farms of the whole of New Caledonia was carried out and factor

The dispersion of the Karoo paralysis tick, Ixodes rubicundus, within a naturally infested population of sheep in South Africa.

The ratio of variance to mean (s2/means) of numbers of Ixodes rubicundus (males and females) per sheep was used as a measure of the dispersion pattern of this tick within a naturally infested population of sheep. Sheep were divided into two groups, one with previous contact with I. rubicundus and the other with no previous contact. Samples of 10 sheep from each group were searched for ticks on a weekly basis for 19 weeks during the winter of 1986. In each group, both male and female ticks had an s2/means ratio greater than 1 for the majority of observation periods indicating an aggregated disp
