Pregnancy-Related Venous Thromboembolism Risk Perception and Prevention in Risk-Averse Times-Significant Change Required: a Commentary.

Between 2020 and 2022 in the United Kingdom (UK), there were 45 maternal deaths from venous thromboembolism (VTE), out of more than 2 million maternities. This occurred despite extensive risk assessment and prescribing of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) thromboprophylaxis, alongside clinicians' overestimate of risk and commitment to the cause. Whilst every maternal death is a tragedy, the challenge ahead is immense-to identify, in an efficient and consistent way, those few women at risk of life-threatening thrombosis, and then minimise that risk with a cost-effective therapy that is accept

Effects of Vibration-Based Generation of Timing of Tactile Perception on Upper Limb Function After Stroke: A Case Study.

Sensorimotor dysfunction of the fingers and hands hinders the recovery of motor function post-stroke. Generally, hemiplegic patients are unable to properly control the dynamic friction generated between their fingers and objects during hand/finger muscle activity. In addition to sensory information, a sense of agency generated by the temporal synchronization of sensory prediction and sensory feedback is required to control this dynamic friction. In the present study, we utilized a novel rehabilitation device that transmits real-time fingertip contact information to a transducer in a case of st

Positivity in peer perceptions over time: Personality explains variation at zero-acquaintance, popularity explains differential change.

People have characteristic ways of perceiving others' personalities. When judging others on several traits, some perceivers tend to form globally positive and others tend to form globally negative impressions. These differences, often termed perceiver effects, have mostly been conceptualized as a static construct that taps perceivers' personal stereotypes about the average other. Here, we assessed perceiver effects repeatedly in small groups of strangers who got to know each other over the course of 2-3 weeks and examined the degree to which positivity differences were stable versus developed

A Randomized, controlled, crossover trial to investigate times to onset of the perception of soothing and cooling by over-the-counter heartburn treatments.

This was a randomized, controlled, four-way crossover study in 45 subjects with a tendency to suffer from moderate heartburn following some meals. The study was designed to assess the time to onset of the perceived soothing and cooling effects of the alginate raft-forming products, Gaviscon Liquid (peppermint), Gaviscon Double Action Liquid (peppermint) and Gaviscon Powder Formulation (fresh tropical), compared with a non-active sublingual control. All three Gaviscon products provided significantly faster soothing and cooling effects compared with the control. Based on the upper 95% confidence

A comparison of ambient casino sound and music: effects on dissociation and on perceptions of elapsed time while playing slot machines.

This research examined the effects of a casino's auditory character on estimates of elapsed time while gambling. More specifically, this study varied whether the sound heard while gambling was ambient casino sound alone or ambient casino sound accompanied by music. The tempo and volume of both the music and ambient sound were varied to manipulate temporal engagement and introspection. One hundred and sixty (males = 91) individuals played slot machines in groups of 5-8, after which they provided estimates of elapsed time. The findings showed that the typical ambient casino auditive environment,

Pregnancy Care in Times of Cannabis Legalization: Self-Rated Knowledge, Risk Perception and Communication Practices of Midwives in Germany.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The legalization of recreational cannabis in Germany in 2024 has increased the relevance of cannabis use in maternal healthcare. Although prenatal cannabis exposure is associated with potential risks to fetal development, the topic remains underrepresented in midwifery research and education. Germany, midwives play a key role in prenatal care. This study investigates midwives' self-rated knowledge, perceived risks, and the frequency of screening and counseling on cannabis use during pregnancy. METHODS: This study presents a secondary analysis of cross-sectional survey d

Teenage first-time mothers' perceptions about their health care needs in the immediate and early postpartum period in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Teenagers have higher risks for complications during the intrapartum and postpartum periods. Although facility-based postpartum care focusses on preventing complications in mothers and babies, it is not understood what teenage-mothers' perceptions are about their health care needs in the early postpartum period. METHODS: An exploratory descriptive qualitative study was conducted in four health facilities in Uganda. In-depth interviews with 42 first-time teenage mothers aged 14 to 19 years were conducted between March and April 2020. Thematic analysis was done. RESULTS: Two themes

Effects of Manipulating the Amplitude of Consonant Noise Portion on Subcortical Representation of Voice Onset Time and Voicing Perception in Stop Consonants.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate whether speech perception would reflect small latency changes in subcortical speech representation. Method Twelve native Japanese listeners participated in the experiment. Those listeners participated in speech identification task and auditory brainstem response (ABR) measurement using /d/-/t/ continuum stimuli varying in voice onset time (VOT) with manipulation of the amplitude of initial noise (consonant) portion, the duration of which corresponded to VOT. Results Increasing the noise portion amplitude lengthened subcortical representation

The influence of knowledge of performance endpoint on pacing strategies, perception of effort, and neural activity during 30-km cycling time trials.

It is understood that withholding information during exercise can alter performance during self-paced exercise, though less is known about neural activity during such exercise. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of withholding versus providing distance feedback on perception, muscular activation, and cerebral activity during cycling time trials (TT). Nine well-trained male cyclists randomly completed 2 x 30-km TT, with provision of performance information and distance feedback (known; KTT), and without performance information and remaining distance (unknown; UTT). HIV-Positive Patients' Perceptions of Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence in Relation to Subjective Time: Imprinting, Domino Effects, and Future Shadowing.

Antiretroviral treatment adherence barriers are major concerns in HIV care. They are multiple and change over time. Considering temporality in patients' perceptions of adherence barriers could improve adherence management. We explored how temporality manifests itself in patients' perceptions of adherence barriers. We conducted 2 semi-structured focus groups on adherence barriers with 12 adults with HIV which were analyzed with grounded theory. A third focus group served to validate the results obtained. Three temporal categories were manifest in HIV-positive patients' perceptions of barriers:

Body perceptions, weight control behavior, and changes in adolescents' psychological well-being over time: a longitudinal examination of gender.

This study used the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to explore gender differences in the relationship between body perceptions and behavior and changes in adolescents' psychological well-being over a one-year time period. The sample included 12,814 adolescents (51% girls) aged 11-20 comprised of 68% Non-Hispanic White, 15% African American, 12% Hispanic, and 4% Asian. Perceptions of being larger or more developed generally decreased girls' psychological well-being over time. Body perceptions and behavior did not significantly influence changes in boys' psychological well-being

"The Cancer is My Life": patient and caregiver perceptions of the time toxicity of palliative systemic cancer treatments for advanced gastrointestinal cancers.

PURPOSE: Treatment for advanced cancer entails substantial time commitments, which has been labelled the 'time toxicity' of treatment, though the perspectives of people affected by cancer are still being established. We aimed to establish patient and caregiver perspectives on the 'time toxicity' of palliative systemic treatments. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted using an inductive approach. Purposively selected adults with advanced gastrointestinal cancers who had received palliative systemic therapy and caregivers were recruited from one metropolitan and regiona

"The Time Has Arrived": Perceptions of Behavioral Adjustments in the Context of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Availability Among Adolescents in South Africa.

Antiretroviral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) holds enormous potential to reduce HIV acquisition in key populations globally. We conducted an exploratory PrEP acceptability study using qualitative methodology among adolescents and service providers in the Western Cape Province of South Africa to inform future PrEP implementation challenges in South Africa and other high-prevalence African countries. Semistructured focus groups and in-depth individual interviews were conducted among 57 adolescents 16-17 years of age, living with and without HIV, and 25 clinical service providers. Adolescents a

Attachment-related differences in perceptions of an initial peer interaction emerge over time: evidence of reconstructive memory processes in adolescents.

This study examined whether attachment, assessed using the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI; George, Kaplan, & Main, 1996) was linked to how adolescents reconstructed their memory for an initial interaction with an unfamiliar peer. Adolescents (N = 189, 62% female) completed a 10-min laboratory task with a student whom they did not know. Immediately following this task, adolescents rated their perceptions of the interaction. Adolescents completed the same perception measure 2 weeks later. Although adolescents classified as secure and insecure on the AAI did not differ in how they perceived unfa
