This report describes two patients with monostotic fibrous dysplasia affecting maxillary alveolar processes. The long-term care for patient ML between ages 6 and 28 years included the transplantation of a premolar and a third molar tooth into the affected area, but the transplanted tooth 14 had to be extracted 6 years later. The patient JW, who presented at age 5 with an asymptomatic swelling in the left deciduous molar and first permanent molar region, was followed for 15 years. Teeth 24, 25, and 26 were developmentally absent. The roots of the deciduous teeth of both patients resorbed normal

The potential for significant blood loss following deciduous tooth extractions has been a factor in treatment planning in dental care for children. This paper reports the results of a study which aimed to quantify normal blood loss following extraction of deciduous teeth from medically fit children under general anaesthetic. Blood loss from a group of 50 children aged 3 to 5 years, having at least one molar tooth removed, was determined by comparing the amount of haemoglobin in a sample of the patient's whole blood with a known dilution of blood collected during surgery and recovery. Total blo

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Hunter syndrome (MPS II) affects the crystallographic texture (preferred orientation) of enamel.
DESIGN: Synchrotron X-ray diffraction, being a state of the art technique, has been used to determine the enamel crystallite orientation in enamel affected by Hunter syndrome (MPS II). The incisal, lingual and cervical regions of the MPS II affected tooth were observed and compared to healthy tooth.
RESULTS: It was observed that there is a loss of organization of crystallites in deciduous incisal enamel affected by Hunter syndrome (MPS II) as compared to healthy de

No other factor plays a more significant role in preventive and interceptive dentistry than the preservation of deciduous dentition till its normal time of exfoliation. Premature loss of a deciduous tooth or a group of teeth might lead to wide range of implications. When the deciduous second molar is lost before the eruption of first permanent molar, intra-alveolar type of space maintainer is indicated. But in cases of bilateral loss of these teeth the conventional design generally poses a variety of problems. Thus, the conventional designs are required to be modified according to the needs of

Supernumerary teeth are the extra teeth which may have either erupted or unerupted in addition to normal dentition and are seen both in deciduous as well as permanent dentition. The incidence of supernumerary teeth shows more frequent occurrence in permanent dentition than deciduous dentition, affecting both the sexes. The etiology of supernumerary teeth is still unknown and not well understood, but thought to be the result from disturbance during the initiation and proliferation stages of tooth development. In the present study an attempt has been made to asses, its prevalence in deciduous an

The chronology of tooth emergence is often used to examine the growth and development of individuals and to compare life histories across species. Emergence patterns are also used to age animals and to infer life history influences for extinct species. However, comparative studies of primates are hindered by a lack of dental development data for many species. Here we describe the sequences and timing of tooth emergence for a large sample of semi-free-ranging mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) and compare this with other life history variables for this species. Deciduous dentition emerged in the seq

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of malocclusion and its association with the early loss of deciduous teeth and other factors in children in the mixed dentition phase, aged six to eight years, enrolled in public schools in southern Brazil.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a representative sample of 528 children from municipal public schools in 2009. Data collection involved a clinical examination for the determination of early tooth loss, dental caries, tongue pressure and malocclusion (outcome), as well as the administration of a questionnaire. BACKGROUND: Human teeth develop sequentially and symmetrically in both halves of the jaws. Disorders of tooth development and eruption can be local or generalized. The symmetry comparison of tooth development is an essential measuring point to assess dentition. The aim of this study was the development of an easy-to-apply score that represents the tooth development of one side of the jaw to carry out side-specific development comparisons.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The stages of development and the state of health of the teeth were determined on orthopantomograms of 59 healthy children and adolesc

Cyclical renewal of integumentary organs, including hair, feathers, and teeth occurs throughout an organism's lifetime. Transition from the resting to the initiation stage is critical for each cycle, but the mechanism remains largely unknown. Humans have two sets of dentitions-deciduous and permanent-and tooth replacement occurs only once. Prior to eruption of the permanent tooth (PT), the successional dental lamina (SDL) of the PT can be detected as early as the embryonic stage, even though it then takes about 6-12 years for the SDL to develop to late bell stage. Little is known about the mec

With the advancement in ceramic restorations bonded to tooth structure, the treatment has become a feasible and conservative option to restore teeth with alteration in shape when owing to high demand in esthetics, with or without minimum tooth preparation. This article describes a report of a 32-year-old woman who was dissatisfied with her smile. The patient reported that she still had deciduous teeth, and that the maxillary lateral incisors had been restored with direct resin composite to correct the teeth shape. After discussing the restorative possibilities, a decision was made to place all

OBJECTIVES: Dental eruption schedules have been closely linked to life history variables. Here we examine a sample of 50 perinatal primates (28 species) to determine whether life history traits correlate with relative tooth size at birth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Newborn primates were studied using serial histological sectioning. Volumes of deciduous premolars (dp2 -dp4 ), replacement teeth (if any), and permanent molars (M1-2/3 ) of the upper jaw were measured and residuals from cranial length were calculated with least squares regressions to obtain relative dental volumes (RDVs).

Traumatic lesions in primary teeth are frequent in pediatric patients and can cause problems both to the deciduous tooth and permanent successor. The impact strength on deciduous tooth can reach the growing permanent tooth, affecting its morphology, structure and position, or even hampering its proper development. This report describes an aesthetic-functional rehabilitation process in an 8 year 10 month old boy during a multidisciplinary treatment held at the Clinical Center of Dental Trauma in Primary Teeth of the Pediatric Dentistry of Dental College of University of São Paulo, Brazil. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the adaptation of different types of restorations towards deciduous and young permanent teeth.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Class V cavities were prepared in deciduous and young permanent teeth and filled with different materials (a conventional glass-ionomer, a resin-modified glass-ionomer, a poly-acid-modified composite resin and a conventional composite resin). Specimens were aged in artificial saliva for 1, 6, 12 and 18 months, then examined by SEM.
RESULTS: The composite resin and the polyacid-modified composite had better marginal adaptation

Here, we report the complete resolution of a calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) in the right mandible after marsupialization in an 8-year-old girl with a mixed dentition. Clinical, radiographic, and histopathological findings showed a simple cystic variant of CCOT in the region of the deciduous second molar, with dislocation of the permanent second premolar tooth germ. Initial treatment involved marsupialization, including extraction of the involved deciduous tooth, incision of pathological tissue, and creation of a window in the extraction socket. The crown of the dislocated second pr

Our results of bone grafting to the alveolar process during the mixed dentition were investigated in 55 consecutively treated patients (66 clefts). The amount of remaining bone and gingival retraction at the tooth mesial to the cleft after 3 and 12 months was measured and correlated with the following anatomical conditions present during surgery: width of the cleft, rotation of the adjacent incisor, stage of eruption of the tooth distal to the cleft. It was also considered if any deciduous lateral incisor or canine was extracted during surgery and if any flap dehiscence took place postoperativ

Seventy-four hominoid primary teeth have been recovered from the middle Miocene site of Paşalar, Turkey, constituting the largest sample of deciduous teeth for any species of fossil ape. Morphological features that characterize the permanent teeth of Griphopithecus alpani from the site have also been identified in some of these deciduous teeth, including a lingual pillar on the di(1)s. These features plus the overwhelming preponderance of G. alpani permanent teeth at the site suggest that all of the deciduous teeth belong to this species. Contrary to the situation in the permanent teeth, nothi

A dentigerous cyst is the most common developmental odontogenic cyst. It is a benign and asymptomatic intraosseous lesion that affects the bones of the maxillofacial complex, interfering with tooth eruption. This article reports the spontaneous eruption of a canine after marsupialization of an infected dentigerous cyst and extraction of the deciduous teeth. A radiograph showed a large cyst with a radiolucent area involving the mandibular left deciduous canine and first molar, and the permanent canine and first premolar. Although enucleation is the treatment of choice, marsupialization is the b

Maxillary canine impaction is an often-encountered dental anomaly as after the third molar it is the maxillary canine that is the most frequently impacted tooth. One of many factors causing impaction of maxillary canines is the presence of the persistent primary canine. The aim of the study was early evaluation of resorption of deciduous maxillary canines and an attempt at prediction of impaction or delayed eruption of their permanent counterparts as well as the possibility of their eruption in proper position in the dental arch. There were examined digital intraoral radiograms of 43 patients

Tooth eruption is defined as the movement of a tooth from its site of development within the alveolar process to its functional position in the oral cavity. The process of tooth eruption can be divided into different phases: pre-eruptive bone stage, alveolar bone stage, mucosal stage, preocclusal stage, occlusal stage and maturation stage. Any disturbance in these phases can lead to eruptive anomalies. The incidence of unerupted teeth is usually higher among permanent teeth than among deciduous ones. Of the primary teeth reported as unerupted, second deciduous molars are the teeth most frequen

This article brings a description of a procedure for interproximal slicing. When persistence of the second deciduous molar occurs, the premolar is likely to be blocked in his eruption, while the canine is guided out of the dental arch; in these conditions it might be necessary to perform a slicing mesially of the second deciduous molar. Beforehand one should check for the posterior tooth-size and eruption pattern or sequence of each quadrant.
