Size estimation of unerupted canines and premolars using various independent variables: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Prediction of unerupted permanent teeth is an essential part of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. This prediction is done by mixed dentition space analysis based on the estimation of mesiodistal dimensions of unerupted permanent canine and premolars from already erupted permanent teeth. Permanent mandibular incisors are most commonly used for prediction. Recent literature reveals that mandibular incisors are not accurate predictors and other independent variables have been introduced to make a more accurate and precise prediction. The objective of this paper was to ev

Prediction of mesiodistal diameter of unerupted lower canines and premolars using 45 degrees cephalometric radiography.

The reliability of using the oblique cephalometric radiograph for early prediction of the mesiodistal widths of unerupted lower canines and premolars was investigated. Mandibular models and oblique cephalometric radiographs were obtained for 40 Brazilian children (20 boys and 20 girls), in the mixed dentition phase. Further models were obtained for the same sample when all permanent teeth had erupted. A Student t test showed statistically significant differences of tooth size between the sexes but not between right and left sides. Measurements of the unerupted canines and premolars taken from

Preeruptive intracoronal radiolucencies: review and report of case.

Intracoronal radiolucencies in unerupted teeth are an uncommon radiographic finding; but their early detection and classification allow the most appropriate management protocol to be developed. Early separation of lesions into those that are developmental and remain static and those that are reactive and aggressive is necessary for a controlled outcome. The current paper reviews possible formative mechanisms and describes a case of severe intracoronal resorption resulting in loss of the tooth.

[The transmigration of the permanent lower canine].

A rare dental anomaly--the transmigration--is analysed. This condition, which is sparsely recorded in the literature, typically affects the mandibular canine. Twelve cases in which an unerupted mandibular canine has crossed the midline, are described and discussed. Reference is made to considerations put forward in the past by other Authors on this subject, after which personal conclusions are drawn on the diagnosis, etiology and therapy of this rare but serious behaviour of the mandibular canine. The anomaly can be properly diagnosed only by an attentive radiographic evaluation which is prima

Central odontogenic fibroma of the maxilla.

Central odontogenic fibroma (COF) is an uncommon tumor that accounts for 0.1% of all odontogenic tumors; it has been defined as a benign neoplasm of the jaw. Clinically, the lesion grows slowly and leads to cortical expansion. Radiologically, the most common finding is multilocular radiolucency. The lesions are associated with the crown of an unerupted molar, premolar, or incisor tooth and in some cases, with root resorption or displacement. Histologically, the lesion is characterized by mature collagen fibers and numerous fibroblasts. COF responds well to surgical enucleation with no tendency

[Dentigerous cyst in the mixed dentition].

Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which apparently develops by accumulation of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown of an unerupted tooth. Management of dentigerous cyst in primary dentition needs special consideration regarding the preservation of the developing permanent tooth buds. A case of dentigerous cyst is reported in primary dentition of a 7-year-old female patient and its management. By extracting the infected primary teeth, opening the cyst and ensuring continuous drainage, it is possible to achieve spontaneous eruption of the involved

Hypodontia and hyperdontia of permanent teeth in Hong Kong schoolchildren.

This study was performed to determine the prevalence of hypodontia and hyperdontia of permanent teeth amongst Southern Chinese children in Hong Kong. The sample consisted of 1093 12-yr-old children on whom a panoramic radiograph was taken. The prevalence of congenitally missing teeth (third molars excluded) was 6.1% in boys, 7.7% in girls, and 6.9% for both sexes combined. On the average, each child was missing 1.5 teeth. The most commonly absent tooth was the mandibular incisor, affecting 58.7% of the children with hypodontia. Thirty children (2.7%) had supernumerary teeth, with a male:female

Primordial Odontogenic Tumor: Report of a Case.

Primordial odontogenic tumor (POT) was first described in 2014. It typically presents in the posterior mandible of a child or adolescent as a "dentigerous cyst-like" well-circumscribed radiolucency associated with an unerupted molar. POT consists of an ellipsoidal mass of dental papilla-like myxoid connective tissue entirely enveloped in a delicate membrane of ameloblastic epithelium. It shows features of a developing tooth with a huge dental papilla, and because it is devoid of dental hard tissue, it could be regarded a soft tissue odontoma. The lesion histologically mimics early (primordial)

Mesiodistal inclination of the unerupted second premolar in the mandible of Japanese orthodontic patients with incisor agenesis.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the mesiodistal inclination of the unerupted mandibular second premolar (MnP2) in cases of mandibular incisor (MnIc) agenesis and unilateral MnP2 agenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two cases of unilateral MnP2 agenesis (MnP2 agenesis group) and a control group (control group A) of 22 cases without permanent tooth agenesis excluding third molars were selected. Thirty-six cases of MnIc agenesis (MnIc agenesis group) and another control group (control group B) of 36 subjects were also selected. Mesiodistal inclination of the unerupted MnP2 on the panoramic X-rays was

Fluoride distribution in the enamel of the mesio-lingual cusps of pairs of erupted and unerupted third molars of man with a low fluoride background.

The enamel fluoride concentrations at different depths were determined at 5 different sites on the mesio-lingual cusps of 16 pairs of erupted and unerupted third molars. Six successive acid etchings were done on each of the 5 sites. The 16 subjects (18 to 33 years) were living continuously since birth in a low fluoride area (F less than 0.10 ppm). They did not take any systemic fluoride since birth nor did they practise any other anti-caries fluoride program than brushing their teeth once or twice a day with fluoride-containing dentrifrices with about 1,000 ppm fluoride. The fluoride level in

Physical properties of root cementum: part 12. The incidence of physiologic root resorption on unerupted third molars and its comparison with orthodontically treated premolars: a microcomputed-tomography study.

UNLABELLED: INTRODUCTION Root resorption can occur as a physiologic or a pathologic process, and it is an unwanted side effect of orthodontic treatment. No baseline studies have assessed this phenomenon in the absence of force variables such as mastication, parafunction, and soft-tissue pressure. In this study, we investigated the incidence and quantitative value of root resorption on unerupted third molars with normal development using microcomputed tomography. METHODS: Nine unerupted, nonimpacted maxillary third molars were collected from 6 patients (ages, 19.47 plus /minus 1.89 years). The

Cementoblastoma involving the maxillary sinus.

A cementoblastoma is rare, benign, and of odontogenic ectomesenchymal origin, usually associated with the roots of the first mandibular tooth. We present an unusual case of one that involved the roots of the first and second maxillary molars, extended into the maxillary sinus, and was associated with a displaced unerupted third molar. The initial presentation was misleading and resulted in inadequate management. The definitive diagnosis had not been established until 2 years later.

Dental clearance unsuccesful: cleidocranial dysplasia diagnosed at a relief of pain clinic.

A 55-year-old woman presented to Whangarei Base Hospital Emergency Department with a mandibular swelling adjacent to her unerupted tooth 48. She had never had dental radiographs taken, having had a dental clearance 20 years earlier. She wore full dentures. A panoramic dental radiograph revealed 44 unerupted teeth. Based on the clinical, oral and radiographic examinations a diagnosis of cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) was confirmed. The patient had not been diagnosed with CCD prior to her hospital visit. Treatment included staged extractions of superficial mandibular supernumeraries and enucleati

Orthodontic-surgical-endodontic management of unerupted maxillary central incisor with distoangular root dilaceration.

INTRODUCTION: Root dilaceration refers to a dental anomaly characterized by an abrupt deviation in the longitudinal axis of the tooth. It can be localized in the crown, between the crown and the root, or, most frequently, in the root. This report describes a horizontally unerupted maxillary central incisor with distoangular root dilacerations most likely caused by a traumatic dental injury to its primary predecessor. METHODS: Surgical-orthodontic traction was applied after the redistribution of the space in the anterior maxillary region. RESULTS: Root dilaceration of the tractioned tooth was
