Yugoslav Mesolithic dental reduction.

Yugoslav Mesolithic dentition exhibits maximum mesiodistal reduction compared with contemporary European and North African groups. This reduction is not explained entirely by attrition, and may be seen as a continuation of the European Upper Paleolithic trend. Buccolingual dimension does not reduce as much. In fact, this dimension in premolars and molars is larger than in other groups. This observation also occurs in Natufians, who were grain collectors, hunters, and gatherers. The Yugoslav Mesolithic group was collecting and domesticating Cerelia as well as fishing and hunting. Linear enamel

[A PhD completed. Trauma to the gingiva by oral hygiene aids and oral piercings].

Maintaining healthy teeth and soft oral tissue is important. Clinical research has shown manual toothbrushes with end-rounded filaments to cause significantly less gingival abrasions than those without end-rounding. Tapered filaments are an alternative to end-rounded filaments, but there is no solid evidence for their effectiveness. For the interdental spaces that the toothbrush doesn't reach, the use of special oral hygiene aids is advised. Clinical studies of gingivitis patients have shown that both interdental brushes and plastic-rubber bristles reduce gingivitis after 4 weeks of use. Plast

Enamel structure and microwear: an experimental study of the response of enamel to shearing force.

The anisotropic fracturing and differential wear properties of enamel microstructure represent factors that can obscure the predictive relationship between dental microwear and diet. To assess the impact of enamel structure on microwear, this in vitro experimental study examines the relative contributions to wear of three factors: 1) species differences in microstructure, 2) direction of shearing force relative to enamel prisms and crystallites, and 3) size of abrasive particles. Teeth of Lemur, Ovis, Homo, and Crocodylus, representing, respectively, the structural categories of prismatic patt

In vitro evaluation of enamel and cementum abrasion after toothbrushing.

Abrasion in human teeth brushed with toothbrush and dentifrice was evaluated quantitatively by SEM. Specimens which included surface enamel and cementum were cut from unerupted wisdom teeth. Controlled brushing was carried out by a brushing machine, with dentifrice or saline, for periods of five and ten minutes. Scratches were counted using SE micrographs. No scratches were observed on the enamel surfaces, due probably to its hardness. The cementum surfaces revealed scratches, the number increasing with the duration of burshing. Brushing with saline was much less abrasive than with dentifrice.

Examining the prevalence and characteristics of abfractionlike cervical lesions in a population of U.S. veterans.

BACKGROUND: Abfraction is believed to be caused by biomechanical loading forces. It may be due to flexure and ultimate fatigue of tooth tissues that occur away from the point of occlusal loading. Other possible causes of cervical lesions include toothbrush abrasion and erosion. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics and prevalence of abfraction-like lesions in a population of U.S. veterans. METHODS: The authors evaluated 103 teeth with noncarious cervical lesions in 32 subjects and characterized them based on the surface on which the lesion was located, history of to

Analysis and comparison of tooth wear in late antiquity and early middle age in populations that lived in continental and coastal Croatia using digitized VistaMetrix method.

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear is a non-pathological loss of hard tissues on the incisal and occlusal tooth surface. In archaeology, the loss of dental tissue through attrition is associated with living opportunities and habits, availability, characteristics and methods of food preparation. In forensics, tooth wear is used to estimate the dental age on cadavers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For this study, we used an archaeological sample from two sample collections. In this study, tooth wear was compared in archaeological samples of well-preserved maxilla and mandible specimens (n=392) from Croatian coasta

Comparative impact of manual and electric toothbrushing on acid-eroded enamel.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare the enamel wear resulting from manual and electric toothbrushing following acid erosion, using natural human enamel specimens. The study aimed to quantify both surface tissue loss and subsurface prism alterations. METHODS: Twenty-four caries-free extracted human molars were decoronated and sectioned to expose natural buccal enamel surfaces. Samples were divided into two groups (manual vs electric) and subjected to four cycles of citric acid erosion (pH 2.7) followed by controlled brushing (30 strokes per cycle, total 120) using a non-fluoridated toothpaste s

The role of diet in the aetiology of dental erosion.

Acids of intrinsic and extrinsic origin are thought to be the main etiologic factors for dental erosion. There is evidence that acidic foodstuffs and beverages play a role in the development of erosion. However, the pH of a dietary substance alone is not predictive of its potential to cause erosion as other factors modify the erosive process. These factors are chemical (pKa values, adhesion and chelating properties, calcium, phosphate and fluoride content), behavioural (eating and drinking habits, life style, excessive consumption of acids) and biological (flow rate, buffering capacity, compos

Enlarged occlusal surfaces on first molars due to severe attrition and hypercementosis: examples from prehistoric coastal populations of Texas.

During an examination of prehistoric samples from the Texas coast, individuals consistently exhibited a suite of traits on the first molars that included severe wear, hypercementosis, and resorption of the buccal margin of the alveolus. The occlusal surface of the tooth was worn below the cervical margin, with the subsequent incorporation of the buccal surface of the buccal roots into the occlusal plane. This expanded occlusal surface, which extends the buccal surface beyond the normal edge of the tooth, is composed of a combination of original enamel, secondary dentin, and cementum. There is

Partly Deepithelialized Free Gingival Graft for Treatment of Lingual Recession.

INTRODUCTION: Gingival recession (GR) is an unhealthy root exposure that could result in sensitivity, abrasion, root caries and higher chance of plaque collection. The prevalence of GR is higher on the facial surfaces but could also affect the lingual tooth surfaces. Despite the etiology and location of GR, treatment is warranted to improve the long-term periodontal stability around the affected teeth. This case report describes the use of partly deepithelialized free gingival graft (PE-FGG) to augment lingual GR post orthodontic treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: The current report evaluates the

Oral and dental diseases in a population of domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo).

OBJECTIVE: Domestic ferrets have been used for many purposes, but recently their popularity as companion animals has increased greatly. However, data on their oral and dental diseases are rare. The objective of this study was therefore to describe oral and dental diseases in a population of client-owned domestic ferrets. METHODS: In this cross-sectional clinical study, detailed oral and dental examination and full-mouth dental radiographs were performed in 57 client-owned ferrets. RESULTS: Variations in occlusion and number of roots per tooth were noted in comparison with previously publishe

Organic tooth wear--overlooked in anatomy texts.

Most anatomy texts depict gear-like apposition of adult upper and lower teeth. But this apposition generally does not occur in civilized man. On the contrary the widespread tooth attrition which occurs in primitive man, is well established. This attrition, which is not depicted in anatomy texts or correctly evaluated in medical and dental education, is a natural protective mechanism that functions to preserve, oral, pharyngeal, and respiratory physiology throughout life. As man removed grit, sand and other abrasive food from his diet, he deprived himself of a natural aid, i.e. attritional wear

Subcutaneous emphysema related to air-powder tooth polishing: a report of three cases.

Subcutaneous emphysema is a rare complication of dental procedures and can occasionally give rise to potentially life-threatening complications. We describe three cases of subcutaneous emphysema diagnosed in the same dental clinic. All cases occurred during tooth or implant cleaning using air polishing (KavoProphyflex® ) with a sodium bicarbonate powder (Air-N-Go Classic® ). The diagnosis was based on clinical findings and was confirmed radiologically. The cervical and facial regions were affected in all three cases, and spread to the mediastinum occurred in one case. All the episodes resolved

Complete esthetic and functional rehabilitation with adhesively luted all-ceramic restorations--case report over 4.5 years.

Complete prosthodontic rehabilitation using single-tooth crowns is an invasive therapy, even though the success of single-tooth crowns is well proven. In some cases, adhesively luted glass-ceramic restorations with reduced preparation depths might be a less invasive alternative. In the case presented, a 40-year-old female patient with multiple cement restorations, erosions, dysfunctional abrasion, and gap formation in the maxillary anterior region received treatment to restore function and esthetics. Minimally invasive glass-ceramic full-coverage crowns, partial crowns, and veneers were placed

Multidisciplinary approach for the closure of multiple diastemata with composite resin.

Morphologic anterior tooth alterations and diastemata between the anterior teeth are often considered a major esthetic problem. In most cases, the treatment of these conditions involves a multidisciplinary approach. Orthodontic treatment together with direct composite resin veneers are a viable option to close diastemata and alter tooth shape. The extent and etiology of the diastemata must be considered and properly evaluated for the treatment. The present article is a case report of a patient with multiple diastemata in the maxillary anterior teeth, dental crowding, and peg-shaped lateral inc

Intra- and inter-rater agreement of a new classification system of gingival recession defects.

PURPOSE: Several classification systems have been proposed in the literature, but none of them has been validated by means of an appropriate statistical analysis and, therefore, it is unknown whether these systems work in the same manner among different clinicians. The aim of the present study is to investigate the intra- and inter-rater agreement of a new system to classify gingival recession defects and to evaluate its agreement among different clinicians. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A new classification system was proposed and tested considering the following three factors: the amount of kerati

Effects of occlusal load on cervical lesions.

Toothbrush abrasion has been considered to cause cervical lesions. However, some investigators have proposed that occlusal loading factors direct tensile stresses at the cervical area, resulting in wedge-shaped abfraction defects. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of axial and non-axial load on the development of cervical lesions. Matched paired premolars, extracted for orthodontic purposes, were used in a custom-fabricated toothbrushing apparatus. A periodontal sulcus width of 0b1 mm with 1 mm gingival recession was simulated with denture base resin. In phase 1, eight match

Tooth wear and compensatory modification of the anterior dentoalveolar complex in humans.

In populations living in environments where teeth wear severely, some compensatory modification of the dentoalveolar complex is thought to occur during life whereby functional occlusion is maintained as tooth substance is lost by wear. This study investigates one aspect of this modification process: Changes in the anterior dentoalveolar complex that are accompanied with wear were examined in a series of Japanese skeletal samples. In the prehistoric Japanese hunter-gatherer population heavy wear occurs over the entire dentition. The following changes were demonstrated to have occurred in the an
